About the ComposerLise V. Gauthier was born in Ontario, Canada After finishing her bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Montréal, she taught harmony and acoustics at the University of Québec in Trois-Rivières, where she later became director of the music department After living in Japan for a year, she moved back to Montréal, where she currently teaches and composes She has written instrumental and choral music as well as works for piano, including two books of piano duets (It Takes Two and Party of Two) also published by Neil A Kjos Music Company

Ms Gauthier has a passion for life-long learning, which is evidenced in her diverse hobbies While French is her primary language, she has also studied English, German, and Japanese Her interest in languages has led her to other hobbies, such as bookbinding Presently her main interests are swimming, reading, and Japanese calligraphy

About the MusicDeveloping important technical skills at the piano can be achieved through the study of brief musical etudes This composer from Quebec has provided each of these 21 original etudes with a creative title (in both English and French) that, along with the music, stimulates the performer’s imagination Technical skills include chromaticism, repeated notes, crossing the thumb, grace notes, finger substitution, octaves, hand crossing, voicing, and double-note thirds and sixths .

Dynamics are indicated for only two of these etudes For maximum benefit, performers should play most etudes with great flexibility, including dynamics For public performance, tasteful dynamics should be applied and marked in the scores
