COMMUNITY SHOWCASE TOURS: ROUND TWO EAST GARFIELD PARK A Neighborhood in Bloom GARFIELD PARK CONSERVATORY ALLIANCE Home to one of the largest and most stunning conservatories in the United States, East Garfield Park is both a neighborhood rich in history and a neighborhood in bloom. The assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. sparked riots which destroyed much of the neighborhood’s assets. What followed were decades of a dwindling population and neighborhood deterioration. East Garfield Park has worked hard to rebuild itself. Today this West Side neighborhood is a burgeoning “green” community featuring the City’s Center for Green Technology, several community gardens, four Chicago-area landscape companies, a beautiful 250 acre city park, national recognized public and private schools and affordable new and historic housing. Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance (GPCA) was created in 1995. The GPCA has a two-fold mission of encouraging the community to explore the fundamental connection between plants and ourselves, and developing innovative, issue-driven programs that directly engage Garfield Park residents. This unique mission allows the GPCA to proudly and creatively enhance the environmental, social and economic vitality of the surrounding community. GPCA’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE: Before the Alliance was founded, the Conservatory had fewer than 10,000 annual visitors. Today over 200,000 people visit annually, with over 30 percent coming from the West Side. Since implementing the Quality-of-Life Plan in 2005, the Alliance’s East Garfield Park New Communities Program (NCP) has been able to invest over $3 million dollars tied to implementing the Plan. In 2008, the $4.75 million permanent exhibition, “Sugar from the Sun,” opened. Since 2008, the NCP’s Walking Club members have walked over 16,000 miles. In 2009, the GPCA coordinated 852 field trips to the Conservatory and offered 437 education programs. GPCA’S PLANS INCLUDE: Re-establish Madison Street as the community’s retail Main Street. The opening of Inspiration Kitchens Garfield Cafe. Green Job training program with Safer Foundation which focuses on implementing strategies outlined in the City’s Climate Action Plan. Continue working with the City and developers to purchase, rehab and sell formerly foreclosed properties.
