LIS 203-101 COIMBRA, ROMAN RUINS & CONIMBRIGA & BUCACO 2 days/1 night

The Roman Ruins of Conimbriga, situated on a triangular spur and bordered by

two deep and narrow valleys, are among the finest in the Iberian Peninsula. A

Celtic city stood on this spot as long ago as the Iron Age. The present ruins,

however, are those of a Roman town situated on either side of an important road

which connected Lisbon and Braga; it was founded in the first century and

remained prosperous over a long period. Buçaco National Park is the country’s

most revered woodland and

the site of Napoleon’s first

significant defeat during the

Peninsular War. Over 700

species of trees, many of

them introduced from other

countries, flourish through

the forest. The royal palace

stands in the heart of the

forest, now a hotel and

summer retreat for royalty.

ITINERARY

Day 1: (L, D) Drive by air-conditioned motorcoach to Coimbra to visit the city and local university. Enjoy lunch at a local

restaurant and then proceed to Buçaco National Park, crowning the northernmost peak of the Serra do Bussaco. In the

majestic forest stands the royal palace of Buçaco built in the 19th century. Milestones and memorials of the victory won over

the Napoleonic army are the Obelisk and Military Museum. (L, D; Hotel in Coimbra)

Day 2: (B, L) After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Conimbriga to explore the Roman ruins. Proceed to Nazaré for lunch at a local

restaurant. Travel to Sitio, a belvedere built on the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea from a height of 361 feet and offering a

fine view of the lower town and the beach. Continue to Óbidos, completely enclosed by lofty medieval walls. This is a small

town with whitewashed houses brightened by colorful bougainvillea flowers. The massively towered castle has been converted

into an elegant pousada (“great escape”). In the mid-afternoon, depart for the return journey to Lisbon.

Please note: Extensive amount of walking at National Park of Bussaco. Comfortable shoes and clothing suggested.

LIS 102-101 ALCOBACA, BATLHA & FATIMA Full Day

En route to Alcobaça, you’ll see the outlying

areas of Lisbon and hear information on

Portugal’s economy, history, gastronomy, and

traditions applied to the region of Estremadura,

where you’ll find the villages of Alcobaça and

Batalha. You’ll get to know about the Portuguese

Reconquest (1st Dynasty of Portugal) as well as

the meaning of the religious and military Orders

in that Campaign. The Monastery of Santa Maria

de Alcobaça was founded in 1153 by the

Cistercian Order to fulfill a pledge made by King Afonso Henriques, 1st King of

Portugal, when he conquered Santarém from the Moors. This abbey is a UNESCO

World Heritage Site, known for its architecture and maintenance. The Gothic

Monastery of Santa Maria da Victoria in Batalha was built in the 14th century to

commemorate the victory of the Battle of Aljubarrota against the Spanish. The monastery contains the most important

collection of medieval stained glass windows (15th century) in Portugal. Next you will drive to Fatima where you will have lunch.

You will visit the village of Fatima, which is the scene of the purported religious sightings in May 1917, when the Virgin Mary

"appeared" before three peasant children. The Virgin Mary asked them to pray for peace in the world and promised to appear

again on the 13th of every month until October. Fatima’s imposing modern basilica and its square (which is larger than St.

Peter’s Square in Vatican City) were a favorite among Summer 2012 visitors.

LIS 103-101 LISBON AND DISCOVERY TOUR Half Day

You will head to the Belém area to visit

the Jeronimos Monastery. This

monument, designed in the Manueline

style, was built in the 16th century, under

the orders of Manuel I, to commemorate

Vasco da Gama's successful return from

India. Just next door is the Maritime

Museum, one of the most important

museums in Europe, which evokes

Portugal's domination of the seas. It houses model ships from the Age of

Discovery to present day. Next, you will stop at the Confeitaria Nacional to taste

the famous Pastel de Belém, and across the street, you will see the Belém Tower

and the Monument of the Discoveries. The Belém Tower was built in 1515 as a

fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor. It was the starting point for

many of the voyages of discovery, and was the last sight sailors had of their

homeland. The Monument of the Discoveries was built in 1960 to commemorate

the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It represents a

three-sailed ship ready to depart and features sculptures of important historical

figures.

LIS 104-101 ART OF TILES PAINTING Half Day

Many countries display their heritage in

museums. Portugal's national treasures are

colorful, hand-painted tiles – azulejos – that

adorn homes, buildings, palaces, churches,

and even subway stations. Dating from the

15th century, the blue and white or multi-

colored tiles are a storybook of the country’s

artistic provenance from former times to

present day. Enjoy a panoramic drive of

the city center on the way to the Alfama district. Stop at Portas do Sol Belvedere

from where you will view the typical façades of this old part of the city and its

winding lanes and anarchic stairways. Notice the Ricardo Espírito Santo

Foundation, home of the Higher School of Decorative Arts Museum and

the Institute of Arts and Crafts. Guests will get in touch with local art and craft

and see artisans specialized in leather carving, book binding, gold leaf making, antiques, and tile painting. You are invited to

learn how to paint the historic tiles by participating in an unforgettable workshop. There will be time to visit the

private collection offered to the nation by banker and art collector Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva.

Please note: Tiles will be delivered to the ship before departure.

Museum Reina Sofia – the newest addition to the Prado Museum complex that covers the period from the nineteenth century

to the present. Spread over three floors, the permanent collection shows the first Spanish contact with European modernity,

through artists like Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa, Ignacio Zuloaga, and Francisco Rubio, to the contribution of Cubist and

Surrealist movements with Picasso, Miró, Dalí , Juan Gris, Marie Blanchard. The museum houses Picasso's Guernica, one of

the most iconic images of the contemporary world that represents the attack aircraft of the Condor Legion on the town of

Guernica in 1937.

You will then have the option to return to the hotel to rest or further explore the Prado Museum on your own. From the hotel, it

is a short walk to Santa Ana Plaza to enjoy a nice evening with tapas in this cosmopolitan and dynamic city.

for nearly seven centuries. Its fanciful floors, ceilings, and walls are intricate works of art, and the Patio de las Doncellas is

noted for its friezes, tiles, and stucco work. Well-manicured gardens, fragrant with the scent of orange blossoms and roses,

contribute to the overall sense of peace and detachment from the outside world. You will have a tapas lunch in a local

LIS 110-103 LISBON: FADO & FOLKLORE

Evening

Experience Portugal’s most famous

musical form Fado (“fate”) in this tour.

The essence of Fado is saudade, “to

miss,” which is carried in the lyrical and

sentimental expression of the singer

accompanied by Portuguese guitar. It’s

an urban music, whose origins are

uncertain but surely involve influences

from Portugal’s overseas explorations.

The tour begins with a panoramic drive to the city center of Alfama, the oldest

quarter of Lisbon, where the best Fado houses are located. Enjoy a brief walk to

Pateo de Alfama, a restaurant full of history and charm. Here you will taste

authentic Portuguese cuisine and see a Fado show representing different regions

of Portugal through folk dance and music. Please note: Talking during the performance is considered rude.

A favorite among summer and fall

2012 voyagers, Sintra and Pena

Palace are only 45 minutes from

Lisbon. You will visit the beautifully

situated Pena Palace in Pena Park,

a stretch of rambling woodland

with a scattering of lakes.

The Palace is associated with

the Portuguese Discoveries and

constructed from an original

convent that was built to

celebrate the first sight of Vasco da Gama’s returning fleet. Enjoy some

time strolling around its surroundings before heading to the romantic village of

Sintra, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Spend

some time exploring on your own before driving to a local restaurant to partake in

a typical Portuguese meal.

“The delicious lunch was the most incredible experience.” Daniela Fall 2012 Voyager

After lunch, continue to Cascais, a beach and resort town. On the way, admire the coastal views over the Atlantic Ocean,

including the famous windy Guincho Beach. Cascais and Estoril hosted many noble families from European countries during

historical quarters. Walk or drive to the starting point

located in downtown, where an experienced monitor

will brief you on how to ride a segway. This vehicle

moves by responding to simple body movements and

soon feels like a natural extension of your body. Your ride takes you through

Alfama’s narrow and labyrinth like streets, steps, archways, and belvederes. You

will have an opportunity to get in touch with Lisbon’s authentic, old way of life.

“It was incredible! One of my favorite excursions.” Fall 2012 Voyager

LIS 300-201 PORTUGAL & SPAIN WORLD HERITAGE SITES 3 Days/2 Nights

Deep in the heart of Portugal lies

a rich blend of Roman and

Moorish culture that transports

visitors back in time to the Middle

Ages. There is a reason that the

UN named all of these locations

World Heritage Sites. The walled

city of Evora contains the bizarre

Ossuary Chapel that is covered

with thousands of human skulls

and bones. Monsaraz, which is

beautifully situated, is an abundantly rich medieval village complete with

cobblestone streets and mysterious alleyways for you to explore. Mértola in pre-

Roman times was already an important commercial hub and is still girded by an

ancient, mile-long wall. Seville, the capital of Andalucia, is one of Spain’s

most beautiful cities. It is widely believed that the city was founded by Iberians,

later becoming a Greek, Phoenician, and finally Roman colony. In Seville, you

will be visiting the 'World Heritage Sites' of the Seville Cathedral and the

Alcázar, the palace, an exceptional testimony to the civilization of the Almohads

as well as that of Christian Andalusia.
