I keep crates in my bedroom so puppies in training can be heard and taken outside to “potty” even in the middle of the night. Wait for him to potty and then praise and put him directly back into the crate. This facilitates faster training because there are fewer accidents and more opportunities to praise cor-rect behavior. By the time the puppy is 10 - 12 weeks old. He can usually sleep through the night.

Fear Stage All puppies tend to go through a fear stage. This can occur suddenly and pass equally as quickly or linger and be slow to pass. I have noticed it in all Shel-ties during their development, but particularly from 6 months to 1 year. During this time it is of great help to comfort and reassure your little guy. He can go from a confident stud to a timid baby overnight. But, don’t be alarmed, it is only a stage.

Obedience There are differing opinions on when is the best age to start formal training. Dogs I intend to compete with are given ample time to mature. I may not start formal classes until they are 1 year old. This allows the animal time to build confidence. This is not by any means a hard and fast rule. I encourage you to watch your puppy and start classes as soon as you feel he is ready. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call. “Puppy Classes” are available and I strongly encourage participation as they are a great way to begin training.

Recommended Schools: Hound House North Kennels, Cathy Niles, Good Dog Obedience School, Top Dog.

Spay / Neuter Both male and female Sheltie will make much better companions if you opt to have them “fixed”. An unaltered male will mark his territory and try to get to females in heat. Females will come in anywhere from 9 months of age on, and be equally annoying as they look for males for breeding purposes. Their cycles last from 2 to 3 weeks and during this time they produce a bloody discharge. There is no advantage to allowing a female to deliver a litter of puppies prior to having her spayed. Spaying or neutering your pet can alleviate all of these undesirable traits. Shelties are not the easiest breed to reproduce and should not be approached with our forethought and investigation. The earlier you fix your pet the less it will affect their disposition. Com-mon misconceptions about fixed animals being lazy and overweight are unfounded. Spaying or neutering builds consistency in temperament. Feeding Schedule

To 6 weeks:Free feed if possible. Pups will not overeat. Otherwise three to four feedings daily.6 to 12 weeks:Two to Three times daily. Try to feed at approximately the same time to build consistency. This will aid your housebreaking.12 weeks to 14 months: one to two times daily.Vaccinations5-6 weeks:Modified live Parvo K-F 11Given:2 and 4 weeks:Strongid T Routine wormingGiven:

Standard In as much as we strive for standard ( AKC allows for 13-16 inches at the withers ) this breed is inconsistent in size, producing both smaller and larger representatives. Males and females differ little in per-sonality, both being of sound mind and body, suitable for a small apartment, town house, home or ranch. Although not demanding of attention, Shelties do best when given attention and love in abundance. Their eagerness to please makes them easy to train. Firm verbal reprimands go a long way with such a sensitive dog. Coat Shelties are not a difficult dog to keep looking good. They are double-coated, meaning they have a soft cottony under-coat and a dense long outer-coat. Shelties will shed their coat usually in the summer or early fall. During this time the coat will come out in handfuls and frequent brushing will shorten the process and keep him looking good. The new coat takes two to four months to come in completely. A puppy can take from 2-3 years to totally mature. Puppy Puppies change and grow very rapidly. A six-week-old puppy can be compared to a newborn baby, but a three-month-old Sheltie is more like a 2 year old. Puppies under three months should not be over -stressed, or exposed to high-risk areas like parks, shopping centers, pet stores, etc. Vaccinations are not complete until the puppy is 4 months old and up until that time a puppy is more susceptible to picking up vi-ruses. It is for this reason it is imperative you keep his vaccinations up to date. Do socialize with short rides in the car, playing in your yard, visiting the neighbors and introducing other animals such as your neighbor’s dog, cat, etc. By doing this you are setting a foundation upon which you will build a lasting relationship. Housebreaking Housebreaking can start in earnest at about 8 weeks. Younger pups can be taken out and introduced to housebreaking, or simply paper-trained. I strongly advocate crate training. By this, I am referring to con-fining the puppy to a small confined area, preferably a crate of wire or plastic. The principle is simple-work with the dog instead of against him. Being a den animal, puppies will instinctively want to keep their crate (den) clean. If you regiment their feeding schedule ( 2-3 ) time’s daily and crate the puppy when unsupervised, the puppy will let you know when he needs to go outside.
