How
LiquiD AutoScaler
Works
Web visitor AutoScaling saves costs
& ensures a fast website
It spins up new servers automatically
LiquiD AutoScaler is an automatic scaling solution that scales servers based on user experience instead of RAM/CPU consumption. If throughput on your current servers gets too high, causing user
experience to drop, LiquiD AutoScaler spins up the right amount of extra servers. This is all done automatically.
It is used in multiple situations …
• Websites with traffic peaks • Production Environment • Development Environment • Testing Environment
… in which traffic fluctuates
Online traffic fluctuates in a 24 hour period. There is no need to have all your servers running at the same time.
Scenario Comparison
Let’s compare the following two scenarios:
Scenario 1: No AutoScaler Running
Scenario 2: LiquiD AutoScaler Running
The following presentation is also available in video:

On the left, you’ll see that we have decided to go for a common baseline setup
of 3 webservers and a dedicated database server.
On the right, you’ll see a similar scenario, this time
making use of the AutoScaler.
The associated costs in each scenario are illustrated at the bottom of the page.
The cost of each webserver is represented by a light blue rectangle
and the cost of the autoscaler by a dark blue one.
Early in the morning (around 4am) we can see that the traffic is minimal and one webserver is more than sufficient to handle this
load.
At around 11am we witness a scale out operation due to higher traffic loads. This ensures that the website’s response time remains consistent.
Even with one spot instance, the costs are lower with the AutoScaler running.
At 3pm, we are going to see what happens when we are hit with an unexpected traffic spike, which could be due to a successful
marketing campaign, external coverage or social media exposure.
The current amount of servers cannot handle all the traffic and thus 3 spot instances are created preventing failure and ensuring a fast website.
At this point, the left hand scenario with its 3 webservers cannot handle the amount of traffic, and the page load will become very slow. Resultantly there
will be significant numbers of failed connections.
The high dropout rates lead to forgone revenues. On top of which, a sys admin must be called out to handle the situation. Inevitably, this will cause
reputation damage for the company.
The spot instances are scaled back in automatically as the website’s load decreases.
