From 1997-2011, Dr. Gotto was the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean at Weill Cornell and Provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University. Dr. Gotto’s postgraduate work included doctoral studies at Oxford University in England, as a Rhodes Scholar, and residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. In the field of atherosclerosis, his basic science research interests include clinical disorders of lipid transport and the structure, metabolism, and function of lipoproteins and apolipoproteins. He and his associates were the first to achieve complete synthesis of a plasma apolipoprotein (apo C-I); they also determined the complete cDNA and amino acid sequence of apo B-100, one of the largest proteins ever sequenced and a key protein in atherosclerosis. Dr. Gotto has played a leading role in several landmark clinical trials demonstrating that cholesterol-lowering drug treatment can reduce the risk for heart disease. A lifelong supporter of educational efforts aimed at cardiovascular risk reduction, Dr. Gotto has been National President of the American Heart Association and President of the International Atherosclerosis Society. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Gotto has contributed more than 500 scholarly articles and books to the medical literature, and he is coauthor of the Living Heart series of books that explain the origins and treatment of cardiovascular disease to the general public. Gilles Lambert, MD is Professor in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at the University of La Réunion Medical School (France) and a group leader at Inserm UMR1188 DéTROI laboratory. Pr. Lambert was awarded a PhD in Pathophysiology from the University of Paris in 1998. SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOWDiary of Meri Armen Hambardzumyan, MD
Hospital of Medical Department of PoliceYerevan, Armenia
September 16 – 22, 2018
The sound of the train and the view out of the window were like amazing Nocturne Morts that I haven’t seen before, brought me to Salzburg. When I pressed the Button of the gates of Schloss Arenberg, I did not realised that in from of me the gates would not only open to the Schloss but also many other paths will open to me.In the seven day of being here, I found all colours of the rainbow and a few I will mention.
Blue: I enjoyed the lectures, full of new information and spiced with intelligent humour thanks to which I have never been tired during the seminar.
Yellow: When for the first time surprisingly I saw the dog just in Seminar Hall looking at my eyes. He was Jojo with whom we became friends later.
Orange: Reminds me of the sunny faces and kind responses of all the staff.
Green: when I attended a very interesting workshop with professor Barter and received a compliment from him at the end.
And I want to finish my notes with
Red: Which expresses all my passion to science, culture and humanity, which I found during this seminar.
I’m going to take all these colours to Armenia to share them with those who really need the Rainbow!
Meri Armen Hambardzumyan, MD (Armenia)
SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOWDiary of Natia Asitashvili, PhD
National Center of SurgeryTbilisi, Georgia
September 16 – 22, 2018
I arrived in Salzburg at late night. It was my second visit in this beautiful town and I was looking forward to see the unique combination of ancient and modern architecture and beautiful nature again. I arrived at Schloss Arenberg, filled in some formal papers and got the room key and a schedule of the week. From this moment a very interesting and pleasant week started. I like the location and appearance of the building, very nice garden, the pleasant atmosphere inside the school, and the cozy bedroom and the polite staff.
Next day I spent just in walking in the Center of Salzburg, enjoying the beautiful views of town, walked by Salzach river and returned to Schloss Arenberg to prepare for welcome reception where we met faculty members and each other.
17 September: In the morning (after a very short night), all participants met at breakfast and began to share the features of their national breakfast. After the delicious breakfast seminar started. We wrote our pre-test and we had an opportunity to listen to most professional lecturers and scientists, very respectable people with charming nature. I want to express my gratitude to such respected speakers and great scientists as Professors Philip Barter, Antonio Giotto, Michal Vrablic, Dr. Rekha B. Kumar, Dr. Jennifer G. Robinson, Dr. Gilles Lambert. It was very important that they explained the topic from the most basic and simplest things to the most difficult topics to be understandable for everyone and I am very grateful for this, as I didn’t remember some of even the simplest topics from basic medicine. They underlined the significance of every topic and showed the direction of how we could use this information in our clinical practice. PCSK9 and its inhibitors were especially interesting to me. Of course I had read some information about it, but as this group of drugs is not registered in Georgia yet I did not pay much attention. Now I was introduced to such an interesting and important group and feel prepared to use them properly soon, when they will be available in Georgia. Summarizations of European and American guidelines about treatment evaluations and follow up of hyperlipidemias was very important. I think it will help me in my daily practice.
On Tuesday and Thursday, case presentations of fellows were presented. They all were very interesting. The Faculty discussed our cases with us and other fellows and gave correct directions and advices. The breaks between lectures as well as the dinner in the evening gave us plenty of opportunity to relax and get to know each other better and form friendships. We got to spend time together and with the faculty. They even offered to stay in touch, so we could ask them for help if we had difficult cases and needed support. I want to thank them again for this.Besides lectures, we had a chance to enjoy our stay in Salzburg. We had a chance to go sightseeing, even to attend Octoberfest, which was very interesting to us.
We had a chance to enjoy chamber music concert in the evening on September 20. A young talented pianist, Andrei Gogolan performed music by W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, J. Haydn, R. Schumann and G. Enescu. I was very happy to have this
chance as I didn’t want to leave Austria - country of music and art - without getting pleasure from classical music.
Day 6. September 21, Friday. The last day of the AAF Lipid Metabolism Seminar. We had several interesting lectures again. Then we wrote our post-test and after finishing the papers professors discussed the answers with us to not leave anything unclear and give us one more important lesson. It appeared that all of us could answer the test much better, as it was expected after such perfect training. In the evening, we had a farewell reception and graduation dinner where certificates were awarded and we had one more chance to take photos with our already beloved and respected professors, great scientists and lecturers. So the seminar ended and I left with many plans and ideas of how to implement the information we got here in clinical practice. I think that it is also very important to increase the activity of the local Open Medical Institute, to hold symposiums, translate materials to native languages for other doctors. I would love to take part in such activities.
I would like to thank the Open Medical Institute, all the Faculty of the AAF Lipid Metabolism Seminar and the whole organization team for the perfect Lipid Metabolism Course, for the very interesting, high level and important information they gave us, for the patience and openness to our questions, for their a collaborative and friendly attitude. I would like to thank all my colleagues from so many countries for forming a beautiful group in such a short time and spend an unforgettable week together. And once more I want to express my greatest gratitude and respect towards all faculty and the organization team.
With best wishes and regards Natia Asitashvili, MD (Georgia)
