LIONS CLUBS PURPOSES

To organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as

Lions clubs.

To co-ordinate the activities and standardise the administration of

Lions clubs.

To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of

the world.

To promote the principals of good government and good citizenship.

To fund and otherwise serve the civic, cultural, social and moral

welfare of the community.

To assist financially, culturally, socially and morally the disabled,

disadvantaged and infirm of the community both directly and also

indirectly.

To unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and

mutual understanding.

To provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public

interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian

religion shall not be debated by club members.

To encourage service-minded people to serve their community

without personal financial reward and to encourage efficiency and

promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions,

public works and private endeavours.

Page 10: LIONS CLUB OF KOO WEE RUP & DISTRICT INC. · 1992-93 Miles Cahill 2015-16 Peter Martin 1993-94 John Quinn 2016-17 Ron Payne 1994-95 Robert Taylor 2017-18 Sheryl Blay ... One of the

LIONS CODE OF ETHICS

To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious

application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of

service.

To seek success and demand all fair remuneration or profit as my

just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own

self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of

questionable acts on my part.

To remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to

tear down another’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and

true to myself.

Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or

action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

To hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true

friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to

another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts

service in the spirit in which it is given.

Always bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my

state and my community and to give them my unswerving loyalty in

word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and

means.

To aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid

to the weak and my substance to the needy.

To be careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise, to build

up and not destroy.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What an exciting time we have had over the last year. I didn’t know that being President of a Lions

Club could be so rewarding.

The position of president must be the best one to have. You have people under you doing all the

work, and then the accolades come to you. A win-win situation.

You will read further reports of events that we have conducted throughout the year in the Annual

Report, so I won’t spend too much time going into detail here.

Thanks to Ron Payne for his enthusiasm in organizing and running the Junior Public Speaking program.

Of course no one person can bring it altogether, so his band of willing helpers is to be thanked for

their efforts too, both in the lead up to the Club final and on the day.

Youth of the Year was again conducted by IPP Sheryl Blay. The Koo Wee Rup Secondary College should

be congratulated on the strength of participants for this. You know there are some good people

coming through despite the doom and gloom in the media.

One of the highlights was the Community Carols by Candlelight. This was run by a community

committee and chaired by Lion Ron Payne. With over 2000 local residents attending it was a very

successful evening. The group from Vanuatu that sang on the night was just inspiring. The musicians

led by Claudia Barker OAM were excellent, as were the choirs and soloists.

We held a barbecue at the Lang Lang Rodeo in April. This was our first time at this venue and proved

to be very successful. We raised over $600 for Childhood Cancer. Many thanks must go to Lions Lady

Jen Grant for arranging the food, and to Shirelle Lean for organising the barbys and other equipment.

With six Lions present on the day it all worked like clockwork and I think we should do this again next

year.

The Op Shop is the place where the concept of one man’s junk being another man’s treasure is proven

to be true almost every day. Well done to everyone who assisted during the year, particularly June

Wright OAM, our Op Shop Manager, who continues to do a sterling job. A big thank you to all the

volunteer workers for their time in assisting in the shop, whether it be the volunteers supporting this

Lions Club or any of the other community groups. Also, to the Lions who worked on Sundays during

Day Light Saving time, your support is greatly appreciated.

We had a combined meeting with Koo Wee Rup – Lang Lang Rotary Club. This was a fun night where I

think everyone enjoyed the occasion. Rotary President Dean indicated it should become an annual

event, and we may even combine a project down the track.

Page 12: LIONS CLUB OF KOO WEE RUP & DISTRICT INC. · 1992-93 Miles Cahill 2015-16 Peter Martin 1993-94 John Quinn 2016-17 Ron Payne 1994-95 Robert Taylor 2017-18 Sheryl Blay ... One of the

One thing that has pleased me more than anything has been the emergence of new members taking

on roles within the Club. For example the Newcomers & Neighbours Dinner is being run by members

who we recruited from the same event a couple of years ago. I feel that the event on the 9th August is

going to be a roaring success.

We tried with the Koo Wee Rup Secondary College to start a Leos Club. We started the process late

last year, but, unfortunately, it didn’t get off the ground. This was in no way due to the Lions, in

particular Ron Payne, who not only supported the concept, but worked hard to make it happen.

The support I have received from the Secretary Ken Blay and 1st V.P. Jack Napior has helped to make

this a successful first year for me. That is not to take anything away from the other members who

have been nothing but super supportive to me in this role. I thank you all for the support.

Behind every Lion there is a person who is just as important as that Lion. That is their partner.

Without the support of these partners we would not be able to achieve what we do. Thank you to all

partners, particularly my wife Jen, who supports me 110% in everything I do in Lions.

I would also like to thank the community of Koo Wee Rup and District for the support you continue to

give this Lions Club. The sense of community in this area is excellent.

Next year I am taking on this role again. I have enjoyed my time this year and I hope that the next will

be just as exciting, or even better.

GUNFIRE BREAKFAST 2019

The ANZAC Day dawn service in Cochranes Park

What a fantastic turn out of willing hands there was to cook those all-important 750 eggs and almost

40kg of bacon for the Gunfire Breakfast. A special thank you to Lions partners Ferghal (bacon flipper

extraordinaire) and Bob (fried egg carrier extraordinaire) for lending a very welcome hand, or should

it be hands?

The ANZAC parade was over by about 7.00am and all the BBQs had been cleaned ready for return to

their appropriate homes by that time too.

The fact that we cooked fewer eggs and less bacon this year appears to indicated that numbers were

slightly down on the last couple of years. Even so, it was wonderful to see so many young families in

the march – hopefully, they all enjoyed their egg and bacon rolls on return to the Cochranes Park

Community Hall.

We must not forget that a catering exercise such as this doesn’t just happen. It takes a heap of

organising, what with setting up the cooking facilities, gazebos etc on the day before in readiness for

the 4.00am start the following morning, plus arranging for the all-important eggs and bacon. A big

thank you to all those clever people and to Shirelle for some of the photos that appear in this item.

In addition, our thanks go to the Community Hall Committee for the use of its BBQ and, likewise, a big

thank you to the Men’s Shed for the use of its BBQ – it really did the job with the eggs. Strezelecki

Lions Club once again gave the Club the use of its large gazebo for the event. Our thanks to them too.

The fact that year after year so many of the Club’s members and their partners turn up at 4.00am on

an ANZAC Day morning to cook the Gunfire Breakfast must be testimony to the importance the Club

puts on the occasion. Not only does this give the individual members and partners in attendance an

opportunity to contribute to a most important day in the life of our local RSL, but perhaps it also

symbolises the appreciation we all have for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It also has to be recognised the marvelous job the RSL does in celebrating every ANZAC Day. This not

only includes the march, but also the ladies in the ‘engine room’ (the kitchen) preparing and packing

the hundreds of egg and bacon rolls for the hungry marchers.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR CLUB FINAL 2018-2019 …

Once again, what a fantastic job Sheryl did as our Youth of the Year Chairman at the Club final of this competition at the Senior Citizen’s Hall in Icke Street on Sunday 2 December 2018. This year we had four contestants from the Koo Wee Rup Secondary College – what outstanding support this college continues to give to both its students and our Club. After the private interview judging component of the competition we were treated to the public speaking component, which, as usual, comprised two impromptu questions and a prepared speech. The order of speakers was First speaker: Alisha Fielder Second speaker: Mia Rodgers Third speaker: Olivia Mantel Fourth speaker: Bryce Font

The two impromptu questions were: Should Victoria’s probationary licence minimum age be reduced to 17 to bring it in line with other States? And If your life was a movie, what title would you give it and why?

Four nervous contestants! Mia, Olivia, Alisha and Bryce before the impromptu questions

All four contestants provided interesting responses, recognising how difficult it can be to think on ones feet, not having had time previously to prepare an answer. On completion of the impromptu questions lunch was taken before the contestants delivered their prepared speeches. Alisha Fielder spoke most eloquently about the major causes of homelessness in Australia. Such causes were listed as family violence, relationship breakdowns, drug and alcohol abuse and financial problems. Alisha suggested that homeless people should be provided with their own personal lockable lockers in which they could safely store their few possessions to avoid them being stolen and also provide them with a cashless debit card to enable them to purchase life’s necessities and not be spent on drugs, alcohol and gambling. Mia Rodgers gave a passionate insight into the plight of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. She confirmed that approximately two-thirds of the reef has been impacted by coral bleaching as a direct result of climate change. Mia also railed against the Government’s decision to approve Adani’s application to proceed with the Carmichael Coal Mine. In the short term it may provide an economic benefit for the Australian economy, but it has the potential to have a catastrophic effect on the reef. Olivia Mantel spoke intriguingly about her decision to become a vegetarian and how that decision has an impact on climate change. In particular, if most people decided to become vegetarians, this would

Page 20: LIONS CLUB OF KOO WEE RUP & DISTRICT INC. · 1992-93 Miles Cahill 2015-16 Peter Martin 1993-94 John Quinn 2016-17 Ron Payne 1994-95 Robert Taylor 2017-18 Sheryl Blay ... One of the

drastically reduce the current market for meat. This, in turn would lead to far fewer animals being reared for the table and would, therefore, reduce the volume of methane gas emissions, one of the major contributors to global warming. Olivia asked the audience whether it would prefer to give up meat and make a major contribution to cleaning up our planet for future generations, or to continue eating meat products and, as a result, eventually live on an irreversibly polluted planet. Bryce Font strongly advocated that boxing should be banned, or at least redesigned as a sport to prevent the possibility of long term injuries. He gave several examples of people, including Muhammad Ali, who had suffered brain damage as a result of their participation in this vicious sport. Bryce suggested that boxing promotes the acceptability of violence in our communities, particularly among the young and impressionable. It could also well be that the acceptability of such violence contribute in part to one of the modern day scourges in Australia, being family violence and violence towards women in general. After the three judges, Susanne Rutten, Brian Harlow and Chris Wood retired to consult and decide on the winners, the opportunity to enjoy desserts was taken. Upon the judges’ return Mia Rodgers was declared the winner of the public speaking component of the final, with Bryce Font being declared overall winner.

L to R: Olivia Mantel, Alisha Fielder, President Sheryl Blay, District YOTY Chairman Colin Stephens, Bryce Font and Mia Rodgers

Koo Wee Rup Secondary College Assistant Principal, Leonie McGinley sincerely thanked the Club for providing an opportunity for students to participate in the competition and confirmed that the college greatly values its on-going relationship with the Club. Bryce Font, as the overall winner at Club level will advance to the Zone final to be held at a place and date to be confirmed.

…. AND THEN THE YOUTH OF THE YEAR DISTRICT

FINAL 2018 – 2019

What an exceptional event the District final of Youth of the Year was. As in previous years, the final

was held at Trafalgar and was hosted by that town’s Lions Club. A packed house was treated to five

wonderful young people showing off their public speaking prowess after earlier in the day being

individually interviewed by the judges.

This year, in the order in which they spoke, the contestants were:

1. Eden McLean from Flinders Christian College, representing the Lions Club of Cranbourne 2. Lachlan Vass from Bayside Christian College, representing the Lions Club of Mt. Martha 3. Ben Harmes from Gippsland Grammar, representing the Lions Club of Sale 4. Hayden Flynn from Padua College, representing the lions Club of Mornington 5. Bryce Font from Koo Wee Rup Secondary College, representing the Lions Club of Koo Wee Rup

As most will be aware, each contestant is asked the same two impromptu questions. All of our young

people did an outstanding job answering these questions, recognising they had never seen the

questions before and had very little time to gather their thoughts before giving their answers.

The questions were:

1. There is a significant drop in sports participation between ages 14 and 16 years. What is the cause and what can be done to reverse this trend?

2. What do you see yourself doing in ten years’ time and what will you have done along the way?

The break for lunch gave the contestants a chance to catch their respective breaths before they

presented their 5 minute prepared speeches and it was terrific to have Koo Wee Rup Secondary

College Principal, Felix Paton and Bryce’s family along to offer Bryce their support.

Eden McLean – discussed the stigma that can surround

cosmetic plastic surgery.

Lachlan Vass – outlined the affect that social media can have

on antisocial elements within our communities.

Ben Harms – railed against Adani building its Carmichael Coal

Mine in Queensland.

Hayden Flynn – gave an insight into his experiences in East

Timor as part of his school justice program.

Bryce Font - strongly advocated that boxing should be banned,

or at least redesigned as a sport, since, apart from promoting

the acceptability of violence, it may contribute in part to one

Bryce doing his thing of the modern day scourges in Australia, being family violence

and violence towards women in general.

After lengthy deliberations the judges confirmed that the winner of the public speaking component of

the final was Ben Harms, with the overall winner being Hayden Flynn. Hearty congratulations to them

both.

Although not winning the final, Bryce together with the other contestants were all winners, since

every one of them did outstandingly well, as evidenced by the time it took the judges to reach a

verdict. Bryce can be extremely proud of his efforts and I’m sure he has learned a lot from the

experience – word is he is not only eligible to enter the competition again, but appears keen to do so.

Bryce and his very proud family with Felix Paton

Hayden Flynn, as overall winner, will advance to the State final, which will be held at the Carisbrook

Recreation Reserve, Carisbrook on Saturday 6th April. At this final the winners of the five District finals

will come together, with the winner of the State final representing the V Districts at the National final,

which will be held during the Multiple District Convention in Geelong in early May.

It’s interesting to note that the Lions Youth of the Year Program has its roots in Queensland, starting

in 1964-65. It became a nation-wide project in 1966-67 and has been operating continuously since

then, which is testimony to the value of the Program as one of Lions youth and community projects.

A VISIT FROM OUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR

As a result of President Frank’s inability to attend our second meeting in September, 1st Vice President

Jack Napior was in the chair and extended a warm greeting to our 1st Vice District Governor, Neil

Wingrave, representing our District Governor, Peter Payne.

The annual visit by the District Governor, or one of the District Governor Team representing the

District Governor, is important since the District Governor is the conduit between the Club and Lions

Clubs International. Hence, sometime during the visit the International President’s program will be

outlined, together with the District policy for the year

As per normal, Brent opened up the Chandelier Café in Station Street as the venue for this meeting,

catering for the gathered Lions from the excellent a la carte menu.

Here are a few photographs to record this visit.

Tucking into Brent’s excellent meals Even more hungry diners

Neil’s message from District Governor, Peter was to emphasise the need for change within the Lions

organization, so it remains relevant in the years to come, together with how the organization

proposes to achieve this. From a District perspective the message was about reinventing the Club to

make it even better at doing what it does in the Koo Wee Rup and surrounding communities.

Light the Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's walk to build awareness of blood cancers as well as raise money for research and support of patients and their families. It is held in over 200 communities in North America each Autumn, as well as in many communities across Australia.

In America, walkers carry illuminated lanterns of different colors. White balloons are carried by survivors, red by supporters, and gold balloons are carried by those walking in memory of a loved one they lost. In Australia the procedure is the same, with the color blue used instead of red.

The marchers in Station Street Lighting up the night

Children, adults, and seniors all take part in the annual evening walk. The walkers all enjoy a leisurely pace, as there are no fitness requirements to participate. Usually, it is completed in under an hour. In some walks, particularly in Australia, a short route as well as an optional extended route is available.

Funds raised by participants support the Society's mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Once again the Club threw its support behind the event, with Liz Wade putting a huge amount of work into organising the event, with members putting on a BBQ on the evening for the participants. And what a fantastic result financially, with some $3,400 being raised for the Leukaemia Foundation. Well done Liz – a fantastic job!

It is also worth noting that on the same night of 5th October this year more than 35,000 people around Australia gathered and marched to Light the Night.

JUNIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING CLUB FINAL

On 5 September the Club hosted its sixth consecutive Club final of the Junior Public Speaking

competition at the Bowls Club and what a fantastic night it was.

Some of the happy throng

As usual, the Bayles, Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang Primary Schools were represented with students

from both Year 3/4 and Year 5/6.

The judging panel for the evening was Leonie McGinley, Assistant Principal at Koo Wee Rup Secondary

College and Maurice Schwennesen from the Strzelecki Lions Club, both of whom have been members

of the judging panel for each of the past six years, together with Laura McBride, an Executive Officer

with the Bendigo Bank who graced the judging panel for the second consecutive year. The time

keeper was our very own Shirelle Lean.

The topic for the Year 3/4

contestants was:

Where is your favourite place to

go in your community/local

area? How did you find it?

Describe it to us. Why do you

like it? What makes it special to

you? What do you do when you

are there?

Matthew Dingle (Koo Wee Rup PS): Matthew told us with great conviction that his favourite place

was Koo Wee Rup and he was particularly taken with the fact the town had been built on a swamp,

which gives it a special character of its own. Matthew was also taken with the history of the town and

thought it was a great place to explore.

Alisha Kilpatrick (Bayles PS): Alisha shared the fact that her favourite place is the Lang Lang Uniting

Church Hall, since it is here that she regularly dances. Since Alisha loves her dancing, in particular, her

ballet, she is drawn to the place that enables her to do what she likes doing best. It is also a place she

can share time with her like-minded friends.

Gemma Lyon (Lang Lang PS): Gemma spoke glowingly about the Tooradin Public hall, since it is here

that she does her calisthenics. To give us a feeling for what the hall has to offer, Gemma described

many of the rooms in the building, as she took us on a verbal guided tour.

After a break during which we once again

enjoyed the buffet dinner provided by

Bunyip Meats (and, as usual, the beef

and pork just melted in the mouth) we

heard from the Year 5/6 contestants.

Their topic was :

You are a travel guide. Your job is to

explore, as if you’ve never seen the place

before. Document what you find. Tell us

all about your discoveries and why we

The Junior Public Speaking trophies on display should visit.

Bianca Wilson (Bayles PS): Bianca most eloquently encouraged the listener to visit Koo Wee Rup, not

only to enjoy the town as it is today, with its thriving and vibrant community, but also to take the

time to learn about its agricultural past.

Jayda Tannahil (Koo Wee Rup PS): Jayda also spoke with passion about Koo Wee Rup as a destination

full of interest for both residents and vistors alike. She took us on a guided tour of many of the

business in the town with the main emphasis being on the sense of community and the town’s

historical roots.

Sienna Michie (Lang Lang PS): Sienna painted a vivid picture as she took us on a journey in and around

Lang Lang, describing what the town has to offer both locals and visitors alike. She also gave us a brief

history lesson, confirming some important and colourful facts about Lang Lang’s early days.

During the break for desserts, the judges retired to determine the winners for the evening.

L to R Sienna Michie, Alisha Kilpatrick, Bianca Wilson, Matthew Dingle,

Jayda Tannahil, Gemma Lyon, Chief Judge Leonie McGinley

Chief judge, Leonie McGinley congratulated all contestants on their presentations and confirmed that

the quality of presentations improves every year. She also gave some very constructive criticism on

the presentations generally before confirming the winners, who were:

Alisha Kilpatrick (Year 3/4) and Jayda Tannahil (Year 5/6)

It is amazing how such young contestants have the poise and confidence to not only stand up in front

of an audience they do not know, but also to make the quality presentations they do.

Both of our winners then proceeded to the Zone final held at the Pearcedale Public Hall on 20

September, but, unfortunately, even though they did exceedingly well, neither Alisha nor Jayda

progressed to the next stage.

We all know that, although it is nice to win, it is the participation that counts. For each of our young

contestants the experience will last a lifetime, while winning is such a fleeting thing.

DISTRICT CHANGEOVER

This year, the District changeover took place at Warragul on Sunday 15th July with more than 100

Lions and guests from across the District in attendance.

For our newer members, most of you have experienced a Club changeover, where the ‘old President’

is replaced by the ‘new President’. In the same way, at the District changeover the ‘old District

Governor’ is replaced by the ‘new District Governor’.

The District changeover is important because all Lions in the District are invited to attend this function

to celebrate the year of the ‘old District Governor’, called the Immediate Past District Governor

(IPDG), and his/her Cabinet, being the group of Lions from Clubs across our District invited by the

IPDG to work with him/her to administer the affairs of the District.

It is also a time when attendees welcome the new District Governor and his/her Cabinet.

But, above all the District changeover symbolises renewal.

It is a time when all V3 Lions, whether at the changeover or not, can reaffirm their support for the

new District Governor and his/her Cabinet. It is a time to reflect on the successes of the year just

gone, but, most importantly, it is a time to look forward with expectation and optimism to the year

ahead.

This year’s IPDG was Andrew McMahon, a member of the Cranbourne Lions Club, who was succeeded

by District Governor, Peter Payne, a member of the Lakes Entrance Lions Club.

IPDG Andrew had an opportunity to recognise, in particular,

those members of his Cabinet who had made an

outstanding contribution to the District during his twelve

months in office, just prior to which, as the Koo Wee Rup

Lions Club Bulletin Editor, I was very pleased and just a little

proud when it was announced that our Club had won the

Ron Lipman Shield for its bulletin, being judged the best

Club bulletin for 2017-2018.

After Andrew had completed the presentation of his

awards, our very own Sheryl Blay, as District Historian,

presented him with a folder of all the bannerettes for his

year, which included those from the International

President, the Multiple District Council Chairman, all the

District Governors from his year and all the Clubs in order of

the dates on which he visited them, together with a folder

The Ron Lipman Shield containing newspaper clippings and other memorabilia.

This was followed by the installation of the Cabinet for 2018-2019 and a few words from District

Governor Peter outlining his aspirations for his year.

There are two traditions associated with the District changeover. The first is the presentation of the

District’s gong and gavel by the IPDG to the new District Governor, which symbolises the transfer of

power from ‘old’ to ‘new’. The second is the handing over of the District Governor’s banner by a

member of the IPDG’s Club to a member of the new District Governor’s Club, which will retained and

displayed during the District Governor’s year in office.

This is a very special annual event which brings our whole District together and everyone in our Club is

strongly encourage to attend, not only to find out more about our District, but also to show our

support.

AUSTRALIAN LIONS BIGGEST BBQ

The longer-serving members of our Club will recall that we have been supporting the wonderful efforts of the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF) in its quest to find cures for childhood cancers by participating in the Foundation’s annual invitation to be part of the Australian Lions Biggest BBQ and donating the profits to ALCCRF. In previous years, the Club has put on a sausage sizzle outside Woolies in Station Street, Koo Wee Rup, which have only ever realised modest returns. So this year the Club decided to up the ante and with the permission of the organisers of the Lang Lang Rodeo, ran a sausage sizzle at the rodeo on 22nd April. A big thank you must go to Shirelle, Olwyn, John, Ron and our newest member, Andrew, who helped set up, cook the all-important sausages, onions, bacon and eggs and clean up afterwards. Another great Club effort, particularly when you realise a profit of just over $600 was made, which will find its way to the ALCCRF. Also, many thanks to Shirelle for the following photos.

LIONS AND ROTARY COMBINED MEETING

On Wednesday 17th April, the Club hosted a combined meeting with the Koo Wee Rup-Lang Lang Rotary Club at the Chandelier Café and what a great evening it was too. It was very pleasing to welcome 13 Rotarians, including President Dean Turner and his right hand man, Secretary Graham Warry. Here are a few photos of the night’s festivities (thank you Shirelle).

DISTRICT 201V3 CONVENTION

This year our District Convention, which ran from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th October, was hosted by the Lions Clubs in and around the Latrobe Valley, that is the Lions Clubs of Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Churchill & District and Erica, and what a great job they all did.

After the late afternoon registration period and welcome BBQ there was the flag ceremony and welcome to Convention, which was officially opened by Latrobe City Mayor, Councilor Darrell White.

We were then treated to a presentation about working collaboratively together for greater success by Latrobe City Councilor and local identity Kellie O’Callaghan, who emphasised the need for more women to find their way into senior leadership and management positions with proceedings closing for the evening with an informal reception, which gave the opportunity to catch up with Lions and partners from across the District. Bright and early on the Saturday morning the District’s Annual General Meeting was conducted, at which the minutes from last year’s convention were ratified and the District’s financial reports were adopted, followed by the elections to confirm who would be District Governor, 1st Vice District Governor and 2nd Vice District Governor for 2019-2020, as well as confirming the District’s representatives on the Licola Board of Management and the Victorian Lions Foundation. In that order the successful candidates were Neil Wingrave (DG), Graham

Australian Air Force Cadets participate in Cockerell (1st VDG), Steve Boyce (2nd VDG), Peter the Flag Ceremony McShane (Licola) and Rod Jackson (VLF). After a break for morning tea we were treated to an excellent presentation from Past District Governor Ann Eldridge, the Multiple District’s Global Membership Team Co-onordinator, who, with simple eloquence, put a different slant on how we, as Lions, can change the way we do things to make the organisation more attractive to younger people in our communities. She also spoke about how easy it is to form Branch Clubs and, in particular, Special Interest Lions Clubs. After the break for lunch the conventioneers were enthralled with presentations from the Year 3/4 and year 5/6 District winners of the Junior Public Speaking competition. It was quite amazing not only how polished these two young people were, but how self-assured they were speaking in front of 170 plus conventioneers. Certainly one of the highlights of this convention. Then came a most informative presentation by Dr. Stephen Davies, who spoke about where spinal cord research currently sits and confirmed that there have been some significant advances in treatment. This was followed by a presentation on the Lions Youth Exchange program, where 2017 youth exchangee, Caitlin Varga gave an insight into her time with several American families. After the break for afternoon tea we continued with the very full program hearing from Joshua McNally, as the District’s Youth of the Year winner – what a fantastic young man. This was followed by another excellent presentation from PDG Ann Eldridge about more membership matters – plenty of food for thought.

Page 35: LIONS CLUB OF KOO WEE RUP & DISTRICT INC. · 1992-93 Miles Cahill 2015-16 Peter Martin 1993-94 John Quinn 2016-17 Ron Payne 1994-95 Robert Taylor 2017-18 Sheryl Blay ... One of the

Then the District’s Ride for Sight Chairman, Nina Blythe, gave an overview of the 2018 ride and presented a very large cheque to CERA (the Centre for Eye Research Australia) for its continuing research – a record amount raised this year, so well done Nina and all involved. Almost without a breath being taken we were treated to a segment from PDG Shirley Higman who gave us an update on the Lions vision screening program in schools and she presented the District with a state of the art portable camera that is used as part of the process. Now, Lions in the District can be appropriately trained to use this piece of equipment, so the program can be made available to more schools around the District. Again, another pat on the back to the Ride for Sight people, since the camera, worth something like $10,000, was bought from the funds raised from this year’s ride.

Guess who No.1? And the last cab off the rank before winding up proceedings for the day was an outstanding presentation from the Licola CEO, Adam Wake. Here is a man who some years ago was an investment banker and solicitor, but developed a passion for outdoor education and, in particular, how such a passion could be channeled into helping disadvantaged children and kids with special needs. In his 10 years at Licola he has transformed the place and what it offers these young people. Adam spoke about the WILD4 camps he introduced, which bring these young people together and, through their need to rely on each other, these camps not only develop trust and acceptance between

Guess who No.2? the participants, but also builds their individual self- confidence and self-esteem. In the evening there was a Convention dinner held at the Premier Function Centre in Traralgon. Although the attendance was a little lower than in previous years, good fun was had by all. On the Sunday morning our District Governor Elect, Neil Wingrave and 1st Vice District Governor Elect, Graham Cockerell conducted the remembrance ceremony. It is both sad and sobering to note that during last year 35 Lions and Lionesses passed away. Our final guest speaker for the convention was Nicholas Sinclair, Neurobionics Research Fellow at the Melbourne Bionics Institute, who in layman’s terms told us about the significant, but slow, advances that are being made in the areas of the bionic ear, bionic eye and neurobionics. Perhaps the most impressive part of Nicholas’ presentation was the short video in which a patient suffering from Parkinson’s Disease who had received a bionic deep brain implant went from having an uncontrollably shaking right hand/arm to having no shaking at all – what a fantastic achievement.

After a presentation from the McCrae Convention Committee extolling the delights of next year’s District Convention came the Parade of Cheques for the Licola camps, which raised in excess of $11,000 – another great result. District Governor Peter then declared the winning static display to be the Lions International Stamp Club offering, after which came the close of the Convention and a trip to the Gippsland Heritage Park in Moe, where conventioneers enjoyed lunch and an opportunity to view the buildings and other things of interest in the Heritage Park.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS CAROLS

With the Community Carols being advertised in the Koo Wee Rup community and all surrounding communities, thanks to Shirelle’s diligence, for some time before the event a good turn-out was almost guaranteed, subject to the weather. So, it was fantastic to see so many locals at the event – estimated by those providing the first aid services to be in excess of 2,000. Cochranes Park was a hive of activity in the hours before the event. From the Club’s perspective a big thank you to allthose members who turned up to lend a hand. In particular, a big pat on the back to Frank Ferguson for not only picking up the Bendigo Bank’s marquees, but also fetching and carrying to and from the property shed and to Shirelle for returning the marquees to the three Bendigo Bank branches after the carols.

Rex, Ken and Shirelle deep in conversation – bet it’s nothing to do with Lions cakes!

On the evening the Club again provided the sausage sizzle at the event, which this year showed a good profit. At least this year, after running the sausage sizzle at last year’s event, the Club had a much better feel for, in particular, the number of sausages and loaves bread that would be required. A big thank you in particular to John Burhop and Frank Ferguson for doing such a good job keeping the sausages and onions cooked in sufficient quantities to ensure none of our hungry customers was left waiting and to Club President, Frank Grant and his grandson for serving and, most importantly, looking after the till! Almost 340 sausages served in 17 loaves of bread were served, together with some 10 kilos of onions

As those who attended the event will remember, the music was provided by the Koo Wee Rup Secondary College Orchestra under the direction of the very dedicated Claudia Barker. The carols and other Christmas songs were provided by guest artists Emma Wallis and Holly Timewell and the choirs from the local schools, plus a very special impromptu segment by the asparagus workers from Vanuatu.

June, Olwyn and Linda hard at it – or are they?

The evening was brought to a resounding close with the fantastic fireworks display and a visit from the old fellow in a red suit and white beard. A special thank you must go to Ron Payne, as the chairman of the Carols Committee, for all his hard work and President Frank would like to express his appreciation to all members who in any way contributed to the success of the evening.

What a fantastic turnout to an equally fantastic Community Carols!

CHRISTMAS CAKES AND PUDDINGS

We sold almost 200 X 1.5Kg cakes, over 140 X 1Kg cakes and 36 Christmas Puddings.

These sales gave us a profit of $2040.50 and we still have 45 large cakes and 3 puddings valued at

$801 left to sell.

Special thanks must go to those outlets that assist by stocking cakes and puddings and selling them to

assist our club. These include Ponderosa Timber, Light’s Garage and Lang Lang Hardware. Very special

thanks go to the Bendigo Bank who sold many cakes at four of their Branches to assist this club.

Market Gardeners – Raffa Fields and Cammarano Bros. cannot be forgotten as they purchase on

behalf of their employees.

CONVENTIONS

District Hosted this year by the Region 3 Clubs the district convention was well attended by Lions, partners and guests over weekend of 12th to 14th October. The ballot held for future year Governors resulted in the appointment of Neil Wingrave (Mt Eliza) for the 2019-2020 year, Graham Cockerell (Pakenham) for the 2020-2021 year and Steven Boyce (Sale) for the 2021-2022 year

Multiple District For the first time the convention commenced on Saturday morning and extended into Monday afternoon. In past years it has commenced Friday afternoon and conclude Sunday afternoon. Got to try new things to encourage better attendance. Members of Lions Clubs and their partners or guests attended the National 67th Convention held from the 4th to the 6th May at the Geelong Arena. Ken and Sheryl Blay with Ron Payne and Suzanne De Pelsenaire represented our club at various times. Attendees visited exhibits across a wide range of Lions Club’s non-profit national and international service initiatives and enjoyed entertainment during the program. Interesting Keynote Speakers were from the Missing Persons Advocacy Network and Lions Cord Blood Bank. The chance to catch up with many Lions not seen for many months is always a highlight at convention along with the social activities. For details of actions taken and events at the convention see the Multiple District web site - www.lionsclubs.org.au.

International The 102nd International Convention this year is being held next month in Milan, Italy from the 5 th July to the 9th July.

Future Conventions The next district convention – 25th to 27th October 2019 - is being hosted by the McCrae Lions Club and being held in their town. Next year the Multiple District 69th Convention is set for the 15th to the 18th May 2020 in Adelaide, South Australia. The 2020 103rd International Convention is being held in Singapore from 26th June to 3oth June.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION BOOK

This book contains all of your information and medical records which is needed if or when an

ambulance is called and you need to be transported to hospital. When paramedics are called, a

typical scenario is that distraught family members may be unable to give correct details of the

patient’s condition or the medication they may be on. The paramedics physically have to collect all

the patient’s medication in the house, try and obtain a medical history and take it to the hospital with

the patient.

This small book, which should be attached to the front of the refrigerator, contains patient contacts,

service or carer provider information, medications and any medical condition, so a paramedic is able

to treat and ready a patient for transport to hospital.

The club earlier agreed that this was a “community service project” and as such the donation to

receive a book would not be rigidly enforced.

This EMIB is available for a gold coin donation from our Opportunity Shop or the Direct Chemist

Outlet, in the Woolworth shopping complex, Station Street, Koo Wee Rup.

LIONS COMMUNITY

OPPORTUNITY SHOP

The first public meeting to establish an Op Shop in Koo

Wee Rup was held 1992. Since then the Op Shop has gone

from strength to strength. It is most hearting that the

twelve volunteer groups which man the Op Shop continue

to receive significant equal shares of the profits

generated. The distribution for each of 11 of these groups

was just under $4,600 this year. Unfortunately, due to its

inability to continue working in the Op Shop, the Lang Lang Yannathan Uniting Church was replaced by the Koo

Wee Rup Men’s Shed. The Uniting Church’s support over many years has been greatly appreciated.

I must remind all groups that they must have two capable volunteers on duty when rostered on. In addition,

people working in the Op Shop must be covered by insurance and they must be on the list of volunteers

provided by the groups. We must also be mindful that we cannot accept donations of electrical goods, videos

and children’s car seats.

My thanks go to the Lions Club members who have helped in any way. Kerrie for doing the tickets plus the ladies

out the back, Evee, Julie, Lois, Marlies, Sheryl, Mary, Shona and Pam who often put away the goods left at the

door at weekends and to Mary and Kathy who do the same job during the Christmas and Easter breaks when we

are closed.

LIONS MINTS

Although the number of outlets is small in number, mint sales are encouraging and remain popular with many people, with the Op Shop continuing to be the outlet with the highest sales. Although the profit this year was modest, we continue to sell mints at 50c per packet, rather than the recommended 60c. We should also recognise that much of the profits have gone on the purchase of a large amount of stock. If Lions are running a BBQ, sausage sizzle, or any other fund raiser, the mints are always on display for purchase.

LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT

Thank you to all the people who have donated glasses. We also get them from the Berwick Secondary

College.

In the past 12 months we have sent a significant number of pairs of spectacles to be cleaned &

repaired before distribution for use by those in need in third world countries.

Over the last 29 years, Lions Australia has collected, refurbished and

distributed well over 7 million pairs of men’s, women’s and children’s

spectacles to disadvantaged countries around the world – all part of Lions

being ‘knights for the blind’.
