Citizenship Award to Sunshine Coast StudentKody Jorgensen, a final year student at Maroochydore State High School has been named as the Queensland 2018 LEO of the Year. Leos Clubs are part of a youth organization of Lions International. The word L E O stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. These clubs encourage youths to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities. They conduct various projects in the fields of health care, elders, children, helping others with disabilities, education, and self-development.Kody Jorgensen was president of the Swannies Leo Club in 2017. Whilst he remains a club member, his most significant leadership role this year is serving as the male captain of his school.According to Mooloolaba Lions club president, Mr. Tim Fraser, the Swannies club’s outgoing president, Kody Jorgensen is a most worthy recipient of this prestigious honour. He added that Kody will be a great ambassador for the Queensland Leos in the year ahead. There are 55 Leos clubs in Queensland with a combined membership in excess of 650. Kody Jorgensen has been selected by a panel of judges

to represent these clubs in the national judging for Australia’s Leo of the Year for 2018.In each stage in this tiered quest, members are required to submit an application, participate in a 30 minute interview and deliver a speech to an audience of Lions and community members.Judging criteria consists of: community service involvement; leadership & contribution to development of Leos; knowledge of Leos and Lions; knowledge of local and world affairs; impact during interview and public speaking performance. The judging panel had high praise for all participants in the program from clubs across the state. Isaac Parker from the Aspley Leo club won the Public Speaking segment of the Queensland state finals.

Congratulations Kody Jorgensen and best wishes in the national finals to be held at a Lions convention in May this year.

Congratulations to the outstanding senior students who represented their schools in the Mooloolaba Lions and Lioness Clubs’ stage of the 2018 Youth of the Year program.Alorah Puritau and Serifina Morris participated on behalf of Mountain State High School. Maroochydore State High School was represented by Alyssa Davis and Kody Jorgensen. Sian Jesse and Benjamin Kirkwood represented Immanuel Lutheran College. The annual international program is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth. Lions Australia appreciates the sponsorship partnership with NAB.The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. On Tuesday of this week the students were interviewed by an independent panel of local business people who volunteered their time as the judging panel. The senior student group was then required to participate in the prepared and impromptu public speaking segments in front of an audience of over 60 club members and guests following an evening dinner on the upper level of the Maroochydore Surf Club.

Mr Kim Strong who chaired the judging panel commented “This is one of the most robust competitions that I have come across.” Special commendations are due to the students selected to advance to the next stage in the program. Sian Jesse will represent the Mooloolaba Lions Club. Sian also won the public speaking segment in this round. Alorah Puritau will be the Lioness Club’s representative at the zone level. In our case the mobile shower unit was highlighted to the people that were attending.Youth of the YearWithout doubt this is a wonderful programme that Lion’s facilitate.I took the opportunity to greet as many of the parents as possible one comment I heard was that we did not know anything about Lions until my daughter mentioned she was a participant in this event. It seems clear that it is the youth that will engage with parents to inform them about Lions. I think we need to devise some approaches to make this happen more.Outstanding performances: Alorah Puritau and Serifina Morris participated on behalf of Mountain State High School. Maroochydore State High School was represented by Alyssa Davis and Kody Jorgensen. Sian Jesse and Benjamin Kirkwood represented Immanuel Lutheran College. All did very well! The talks that the participants gave were very passionate and send a clear message of their concerns. Which our community needs to heed. Lions are a taking great steps in this direction as Environment is one of our major platforms.

Sian Jesse will represent the Mooloolaba Lions Club. Sian also won the public speaking segment in this round. Alorah Puritau will be the Lioness Club's representative at the zone level.

The following are the list of completed Project Plans:

• Trivia Night • Trade Up Challenge • State of Origin Night • ROME Social Justice Night • Ricochet Clothes Drive • Going the Distance • Fisherman’s Road Markets • Butterfly Badges • 40 Hour Famine
