EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S

Pridewendy Burns, Executive Director

And just like that, 2018 is off to a running start!

It’s that time of year when many of us reassess and think about what we want to accomplish or do during the year. With that in mind, I’ve got a few suggestions for you.

Attend one of the many educational workshops offered by the Lions of Michigan, starting with the Michigan Forum. With 15 breakout sessions to choose from, you will take-away valuable information whether you are a new Lion or a seasoned one.

Make “WE SERVE” a big part of 2018. Begin by participating in the large, group service project on Friday night of the Forum. With a goal of providing 1,000 first aid kits to Special Olympics, your assistance is needed. Submit your service hours to LCI for service recognition.

Tune into your creative side by signing up for the Water Color class offered at the Forum. PDG Craig Bishop is an experienced artist, instructor and Lion of 50 years. He’ll not only teach you the art of water color, but explain how planning a painting relates to taking on a leadership role in life.

Expand your learning in 2018. At the MD 11 Lions Convention you will have the opportunity to learn more about healthy nutrition and cooking for the diabetic. Human Trafficking is a topic which needs to be addressed in our state. Attend the informational breakout session led by Jane P. White, Executive Director, Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force, to hear what is being done to prevent trafficking and protect victims.

And of course, the Leadership Institute offered in November is one of the best in the country, offering four levels of learning with the Leadership, Graduate, Master’s and now PhD level courses.

Knowledge is power! Embrace the many learning opportunities offered throughout the year and expand your Lion Pride.

Yours in Service,

Lion Wendy BurnsExecutive Director

ONE MORE STAR JOINS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS… District 11-E2 has lost another shining star! IPDG CAROL ATHAN, who just completed her term as District Governor on June 30 2017, passed away at her daughter’s home in Belleville, Michigan on January 10, 2018 after battling a rare form of eye cancer for several years.

Her diagnosis came as she was planning her trip to Fukuoka, Japan, to be installed as 2016/17 District Governor from District 11-E2. She was denied a wonderful experience that so many past district governors have enjoyed – and still talk about. Yet, IPDG Carol moved forward with a courage I admired throughout the uncertainty of her illness.

Born Carol Frances Litinski on December 9, 1945, she grew up in the downriver community of Allen Park, graduating from Allen Park High School in 1963. In 1964, she married Terry Athan and they were soon blessed with a beautiful daughter, Cheryl Ann. She enjoyed a career as a banking professional, serving as a fraud investigator for thirty some years at several downriver banks. Following their move to Lewiston, Carol worked another ten years at Independent Bank in Gaylord.

Carol joined the Lewiston Lioness Club in 2003, and was an active member striving to find ways to provide service to others. In 2017, her club honored her with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. Approached by PDG Barb Durflinger to run for district governor, she discussed this with her husband, considered all aspects of the position, and accepted the challenge. IPDG Carol was a strong voice in the Council of Governors and was always ready to volunteer when there was a need. She

had been a member of the MD 11 Convention Committee for several years In addition to Lionism, IPDG Carol was interested in local politics concerning the welfare and services for seniors. She was involved with the Montmorency County Council on Aging, and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments in 2013. Carol is also an active member of the Lewiston Congregational Church. Over the years, she enjoyed traveling the United States, especially seeking adventures on the back roads. Favorite pastimes included snowmobiling (years ago), 50s music, her Corvette, flower gardens, outdoor “critters”- especially her horses. Did you know that she competed in mid-level dressage on her beloved “Cooter” for 12 years? She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Terry; daughter Cheryl, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who live in Belleville. IPDG Carol had passion and excitement for things that interested her. She wanted to help, to improve a situation. She was devoted to her friends, helping many through difficult situations until the end – an end that came way too soon.

IN MEMORIUM… PDG GLEN DINGS passed away on December 23. PDG Glen and his wife, PDG Nancy, both served District 11 B2 as Governors. PDG Glen was District Governor in 1992-1993. In 2010 he was awarded with the S.A. Dodge Distinguished Service Award, which is the highest award presented in MD 11.

Lion Glen was a member of the Watervliet Lions Club for 36 years, and was installed in Hong Kong as District Governor and governed over 47 clubs. Lion Glen

participated in the Lions eyeglass mission to Latvia, where 2,500 children and adults were screened and glasses provided. He was inducted into the Lions of Michigan Foundation Hall of Fame this past August.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hanson Hospice Center, Lions of Michigan Foundation, North Berrien Senior Center or Plymouth Congregational Church in Watervliet.

LIONESS PAMELA SCHUMANLioness Pamela was the wife of PDG Eric Schuman, District 11 C2 1989-1990. Lioness Pamela was employed as a Registered Nurse for over 35 years, and served as the Secretary of the Delta Lioness Club. Lioness Pam passed away in December, and is survived by her husband, PDG Eric of Laingsburg. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Respite of Shiawassee County.

LION PRIDE MAGAZINE

A Governor’s TravelsIn the past number of months I’ve visited several clubs and installed the club officers at several of the clubs. Each club is distinct in its character but there are some common elements in all of the clubs. There is a dedication to Lionism that is present in each club. There is a quiet enthusiasm for the work that we do. On the other hand there is a wondering why only a few members show up for the meetings. There is a concern for the future of their club. Not all questions can be answered but they can be heard. And that is part of my role as the District Governor. My role also has been to encourage and complement each club and members on the works that they do. Our part in our service is to make the effort to be of service to the people that we serve. We help people as we are able so that they will be able to help themselves. We can’t do everything for everybody but we can do some things for some people. After we do all that we can do we leave the rest up to them. We are responsible for our efforts and the outcomes are out of our control.

Lions Clubs most important asset is our presence in our communities. The works that we

do are important but our presence

is always there even when we

are not involved in some sort of service. We

are a group of volunteers who, at our own expense

both financial and time wise, are willing to stand up and give back to our community for all that we have received. In our own quiet way we are making a difference. We do have the good will of the people in our community. Beside the good will we also have their admiration and encouragement to carry on in spite of all of the difficulties that we face. After all if it was easy who would want to be a Lion? It takes dedication from the heart to continue to be of service especially when it just doesn’t feel good and rewarding. It is out of compassion for our fellow human being that we give of our time, talent, and treasure to make a difference in the lives of the people that we touch.

I’ve noticed on a practical level that if a club has a person who is Visually Impaired as a member then they have a constant reminder that there are people in need as embodied by one of their own. It is kind of a reality check especially when people get discouraged. The blindness of the member just doesn’t go away because we aren’t all enthusiastic. It is by our persistence over the long run that really makes

a difference in the lives of the community, the lives of our fellow Lions and in our very own life. We grow in confidence, experience, and compassion for those in need wherever they may be.

The club that has been a real success story is the Northville Lions Club. This club was down to four members and was on the verge of turning in their Charter. Several of us on the leadership team, then Governor Martha Brown, GMT Lula Gardfrey, Membership Chair Matthew Collins, PDG Sharon Jordan-Crowley, 2nd VDG Shirley Kelley, and I decided that something had to be done. GMT Lula Gardfrey organized the effort and enlisted the aid of PDG Fred Simpson and PDG Bill VanWinkle to join in the effort. A canvas of the Northville city was made several times and twenty new members were signed up. I was privileged to do the Induction Ceremony for the new members. Recently I was invited to swear in the new officers of the club which I did with enthusiasm. I am glad to let you know that the Northville Lions Club is thriving, they have their own web site, participate in several civic activities in Northville and are once again a living thriving asset to the community of Northville.

Respectfully submitted, Lion Rev. Terence F. Treppa Ph.D.District Governor 11 A1

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Kick-off our 98th Convention with a visit to Lions Bear Lake Camp for a tour, picnic, and time spent socializing with fellow Lions and guests. The picnic will be held on Thursday, May 17. Select one of three ways to arrive at camp: car-pool from the hotel, reserve a spot on the shuttle bus or drive yourself directly to camp from your home. We are expecting perfect picnic weather this year, but in the event that it is “too hot”, we will have indoor accommodations!

This year’s convention will offer more learning

opportunities for Lions and guests. Time will be utilized on Friday, May 18, to attend breakout sessions for those arriving early to the convention, and again on Saturday, May 19.

Session topics to be offered include current-day issues which are impacting our communities. Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the world, currently affecting 422 million people of all races, income levels and ages. As Lions, we're dedicated to fighting the diabetes epidemic

to improve lives, strengthen families, and revitalize communities. Sessions on nutrition and in-depth training on LCIs mission of awareness, prevention treatment and research will be held both Friday and Saturday.

Human Trafficking in Michigan is a serious problem and includes trafficking and exploitation of illegal immigrants, kidnapping, and forced prostitution. Lions can help Break the Silence of Human Trafficking. Become informed and be a part of the solution.

Heading to Las Vegas for the International Convention? Learn all you need to know at the “Tips for Traveling to Las Vegas” breakout session, led by International Convention Chair PDG Bill Simpson.

The Lions All State Band will join us on Saturday evening for a brief concert highlighting their performance pieces selected for the LCI Parade of Nations in Las Vegas.

One of the world’s most environmentally-friendly countries is Iceland, however, over time soil erosion caused by centuries of chopping down trees for timber and firewood, grazing sheep, harsh winters and ash from volcanic eruptions caused erosion that prevented trees from taking root. Iceland today plants more trees per head of population than any other nation in the world (around four million a year, or 16 for every man, woman and child).

Lions in Iceland are fighting severe soil erosion to make their landscape green again—and the earth a better place for generations to come. To learn more, watch the video in the Environmental section of LCI’s website, www.lionsclubs.org.

Iceland is covered by ice, glaciers and geysers and has more than 20 active volcanoes.

Everyone in Iceland is on a first name basis, and people are even listed by first name in the telephone directory.

Most Icelanders still use the old Viking patronymics instead of family surnames, with different forms for sons and daughters. For example, a man called Haraldur Magnusson and his wife Helga Jonsdottir might have a son called Petur whose

final name would then be Haraldsson, and a daughter called Ingibjörg Haraldsdottir. Get it? “HaraldsSON and HaraldsDAUGHTER.

The entire country of Iceland only holds a population of a little over 330,000, as opposed to Michigan, which boasts a population of 9.928 million. This small population makes for a largely rural country, and a capital city which feels like a really big small town.

And here is a final fun fact that is so fitting: The world's first female president was an Icelander. Her name is Vigdis Finbogadottir and she was elected in Iceland in 1980. LCI 1st VP Gudrun Yngvadottir comes by it naturally!

Michigan Lions and guests will stay at the Luxor Hotel, located at the south end of the Las Vegas Blvd. and a short distance to convention headquarters at the MGM Hotel. The Lion’s shuttle bus takes you there in cool comfort if you prefer to ride.

The MGM will be the headquarters for all Lion activities, which include: Governor Elect training;

Lions International Convention LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

plenary sessions; flag ceremony, exhibit halls; voting and International Officer’s Reception. The DGE Celebration Banquet will be held at the Mirage Hotel. The MGM will also house Lions with disabilities, Pin Traders, Exhibitors and Lions from 35 states and 17 countries. It will be a very busy place!

• Michigan Hospitality Room will be held at the Luxor

• New, light weight parade shirts will be available for 2018 and on sale at the Michigan Forum

• Michigan Night will be held on July 1 at the Tournament of Kings Dinner Theater.

Calling All Kings and Queens! Join Us For Michigan Night In Las Vegas

All Lions and guests attending the LCI Convention in Las Vegas are invited to Michigan Night, Sunday, July 1, 2018, to be held at the Tournament of Kings Dinner Theater.

Tournament of Kings is Las Vegas’ ultimate dinner and a show experience. Adapted from the tale of King Arthur, this live-action production takes place in a 900-seat theater-in-the-round arena and immerses the audience in a tale of valor and treachery. Valiant knights ride mighty steeds and prove their chivalry amongst special effects and pyrotechnics. While knights fight, guests feast on a hearty three-course meal using the original utensil – their hands. Tournament of Kings is an epic portrayal of centuries past, and it’s all in the name of honor, country, and of course, food. Cost is approximately $62.00. Registration coming soon!

FUN FACTS• It requires 36 staff/management to run the show which includes cast, stable staff, and managers.• There are 22 horses in the Tournament of Kings stable.• 10 horses are used in the Tournament of Kings show.• Excalibur is the No. 1 purchaser of Cornish Game Hens in the United States. Since June 1990, approximately 6,700,000 hens have been served.• Tournament of Kings has become the setting for several dozen marriage proposals each year. All of the maidens have said yes to the gallant knights – that is all except one.• Approximately 4,100 lance tips are shattered each year.• The soil used in the arena is mixed with synthetic fibers to create a better cushion. This is important because many of the show's stunt falls are done off of the horses.• The swords used in the performance are titanium and create sparks during battle sequences.• We use 10-12 tons of wood shavings monthly in the horse’s stables.• As a group, all of our horses eat 125 tons of hay annually.• The core team producing Tournament of Kings (Producer, Director and Stunt Coordinator), have been with the show since its opening in 1999. They were all also involved with the original King Arthur’s Tournament, which opened at the Excalibur in 1990.

Las Vegas is famous for entertainment! Tour the Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam; take in a Broadway show, ride the LINQ Ferris Wheel, check out the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop featured on “Pawn Stars” or walk the strip and take in the many sights only seen in Vegas! Need a more personal guide? Contact a tour company such as Globus or Tauck and Collette.

Looking forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!
