What is Linux

Linux is an open-source operating system modelled on UNIX.

Why to use linux

Linux 5 year support

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and follows Canonical’s schedule of two releases a year. Ubuntu just came out with a release offering five-year support and Linux Mint followed suit.

Choice of user interfaces

Linux Mint gives you a choice of user interfaces, including Gnome-branch Cinnamon, its half-brother Mate, or the lightweight Xfce version. Mint is based on Ubuntu, but there’s also a version of Linux Mint 17 that’s based on Debian Linux (LMDE).

Why Cinnamon

Cinnamon has become our favorite because of its support for multimedia, its mostly logical user interface interactions, and lots of compatibility.

32-bit or 64-bit versions

These UIs can be downloaded in either 32- or 64-bit versions. What this means is that you can run Mint on an old, 32-bit computer.

Linux Mint 17 continues in a line of Linux desktop-focused releases, and in testing we found it’s become more mature than prior versions.

Linux uses Open-source software, so you are free of customization and changing your browser.

Linux fixes bugs and is always updated frequently with new things.

Why would I want to use Linux instead of Windows? You know the answer to this question

might be that you wouldn’t You might be perfectly happy working away in Windows land and if that is how you choose to use your computer then that is fine. You might consider leaving Windows for the following reasons however:

You need a new computer and you don’t like the look and feel of Windows 8

You are using Windows 7 but keep getting viruses

Your machine is running very slowly running Windows

You are fed up with constant updates for not just Windows but Antivirus software, firewalls, java, adobe products etc

Your machine is getting older and can’t upgrade from XP to Vista/7 or 8.
