LINUXLinux (often pronounced LIH-nuhks) is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds (started in the early 90's) with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. What is GNU Operating System?

GNU General Public License

• When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things.

Is Linux difficult?

• Whether Linux is difficult to learn depends on the person you're asking. Experienced UNIX users will say no, because Linux is an ideal operating system for power-users and programmers, because it has been and is being developed by such people.

Linux Distribution

• Not everyone likes compiling their own software or scouring the Web for each little package, to address this need, though; to address this need, many vendors have pre-compiled and collected everything that you'll need in a single package called a distribution.

• Which distribution -- or distro -- should we use?• List of Distributions• Top 5 Distributions

The GNU Operating System

• The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software: the GNU system. Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the kernel called Linux, are now widely used; though these systems are often referred to as “Linux”, they are more accurately called GNU/Linux systems.

• GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix”; it is pronounced guh-noo, approximately like canoe.

Distros

• Some distros, like Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server are designed primarily for companies that use Linux on servers. Some distros, like Fedora Core, Ubuntu, and openSUSE have different profiles that are suitable for use on the desktop or on the server.
