    INTRODUCTION

Linux is an operating system -- very much like UNIX-- that has become very popular over the last severalyears. The Linux kernel, created by Linus Torvalds, was made available to the world for free. Torvaldsthen invited others to add to the kernel provided thatthey keep their contributions free. Thousands of

programmers began working to enhance Linux, andthe operating system grew rapidly. Because it is freeand runs on PC platforms, it gained a sizeableaudience among hard-core developers very quickly.

Linux offers more flexibility, reliability andconfiguration options compare to its competitors.Linux is free and have no license-enforcementmechanism. Linux is the best supported operatingsystem of all time. Nearly all Linux configurationchanges can be done with the system running, without affecting unrelated services and without

having to reboot. You can easily reconfigure theLinux operating system to only include thoseservices needed for your application. This reducesmemory requirements, may improve performance, and generally keeps things simpler. Linux works ona wide variety of processors and machinearchitectures.

Considering the obvious benefits of LINUX, manyorganizations are switching to LINUX environment.Today Linux Developers and Linux System

Administrators are in high demand. So Linux is a

    good career move.
