• To design a way to meet the needs of all students without devolving into excessive individualization

• This is the proper meaning of personalization

• How to ensure coherence in curricular materials in a post-texbook era with a variety of digital sources?

• Searching standard-by-standard leads to incoherence

What is the difference between this…?

…and this? What is needed is structure.

Creating Structure for Middle Grades Math

• Create a digital system that:

– Represents the big ideas in a learning map

– Provides links into extensible curricular resources

– Periodically diagnoses student progress accurately

– Allows teachers to flexibly create fluid groups, based on student learning profiles

– Allows teachers to distribute their time among groups efficiently

Creating Structure for Middle Grades Math

Grounded in Research on Learning Trajectories

A learning trajectory connects what students bring to instruction, to a target concept, and delineates a set of landmarks and obstacles that students are likely to encounter as they move from naïve to sophisticated understandings

Starting with a Learning Map…...

● A Learning Map is a navigational system that helps students to explore the content to be learned organized in a learner-centered way.

● Anticipate and participate in what they are going to learn● Experience personalization, not isolation● Find and use digital resources coherently ● Receive and use diagnostic feedback and guidance● Form flexible, just-in-time groups

With a learning map, students can:

Taking a Diagnostic Assessment

● Students take a 20-minute diagnostic test to explore the ideas from the cluster and demonstrate their understanding.

Progress to Date

• Built the map around nine big ideas

• Identified the underlying learning trajectories

• Provided links to illustrative and freely accessible digital materials

• Currently, building and field-testing the diagnostic assessments with 2000 students including in Harnett County at Highland Middle School

• Regularly conduct periodic lab- and classroom-based design studies

Benefit to NC Teachers

• Collaborate with teachers in writing our assessments

• Make research on learning accessible and relevant to teachers in a timely way

• Make materials and map freely available to teachers statewide

• Help teachers to understand Common Core

• Provide a means for schools to evaluate materials and instructional quality using interim diagnostic assessments

What Teachers Say“I think the learning map has made the vertical alignment clearer. Being able to see the progression of learning through each grade level and the standards makes it easier to see what students should already know and where they need to go.”

“I see an additional benefit of this resource, because it’s so accessible. Not just to educators, but to kids, to parents, to all stakeholders. Parents and students usually don’t understand what the CCSS-M says. This is going to be a great benefit to the community that is trying to support a kid.”

“I just want to say how excited I am to take something back to my school and say that

teachers created it. We look at stuff all the time and we’re like ‘clearly this person has never

been in a classroom’ and I just think this is so different in that aspect. It was teachers and

people with classroom experience that built this. What a selling point. Awesome.”

“The assessment piece is such a huge and valuable tool. This is going to be such an incredible resource for diagnosing a kid wherever they are. This is so much richer as

a diagnostic tool.”

Ways to Use the SUDDS map• As a means to help teachers understand Common Core Math

• For professional development around learning trajectories and student-centered

instruction

• To plan instruction around big ideas

• For resources for high cognitive demand instruction

• To give periodic diagnostic assessments for formative practices

• To track progress on learning trajectories over time

• To support professional learning communities to focus on challenging areas of

instruction

• To build personalized learning approaches within competency-based circumstances

To be completed by August 2016

• Revise diagnostics and put into the map

• Create a report to teachers at the class level

• Complete means to add links locally

• Complete a scope and sequence builder

• Develop modules for professional development in using the map

• Devise a means to share the costs of data management with partners
