”The future has to be, without question, the museum as a publisher and broadcaster”
BAM, Germany
In the information society, it is not surprising that many call for libraries, archives and museums to merge into one digital memory institution, a single platform for cultural heritage online.
The Swedish Royal Library
The purpose with ALM cooperation is:• To increase the access to the collections• To improve the quality• More effective extension of the existing resources• To make the ALM institutions more powerful
The Heritage of Culture, DK
Our goal is that you only search one place, and the search machine will find all relevant information in all culture institutions’ databases
What lies ahead and how can it be solved? The ALM institutions already talk about ALM …
Report from Ålborg, DK
The tendency on the ALM area in several countries is a development away from sector devided and seperated institutions and instead focus on the endusers and their access to the institutions ’ services.
But it is not just talk ... ... we can see it in tenders
To develop the digital side of the John Gray Centre, we require:A user-friendly, web-based portal linked to an interactive map, whichthe public can use to search and cross-reference information held onthe databases (catalogues) of the different contributing services:Archaeology, Archives, Local History and Museums.
An attractive and easy-to-use website to house the portal and as timegoes on, additional educational, informative and interactive digitalresources. The portal needs to be search-engine optimised and mobilefriendly. It is a condition of the HLF funding that the portal should allowusers to add their own content and comments, and for the site to havestrong interactive elements.
A user-friendly, web-based portal
Search and cross-reference information
Search-engine optimised
Mobile friendly
Allow users to add their own content and comments
Strong interactive elements
The national library of Finland:The National Digital Library project will create a
national access point, the Public Interface for libraries, museums and archives to make their information resources accessible to the end-user.
The National Digital Library and Europeana are working in close collaboration. Collaboration will ensure that the essential materials in Finnish libraries, museums and archives will also be available through Europeana and those available through Europeana will also be available through the Finnish Public Interface.
But it is not just talk ... ... we can see it in tenders

The Superior Knowledge
The Power of Control
What metadata does the library want to present?• …and how? What local services does the library want to couple
(mash up) with external metadata..• ..and what external services with local
metadata? What metadata..• ..should be coupled to searches in the libraries
website…• ..and to external or local Social Media
functionality?• ..should be available in the libraries mobile
phone solutions?• ..does the library want to stream to services in
the local civil society?• ..should be searchable together with metadata
from other cultural institutions in the locality?• ..can be used by the library patrons?• ..is available to partners• ..should be presented? in which order, which
form? Physical media, own digital collection, chosen electronic media, externally available media, national collections etc...

The Times They Are a-Changin’
Richard Florida (i “The Great Reset”, 2010) points out that local creativity among local people will be a decisive force in building strong communities/cities for the future economy.

Centrally you create infrastructure. Locally you create.
