Part II: Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions:

A. Narrative Report:

I am a pediatric endocrinologist with a special interest in diabetes and metabolism. My focus has been on provision and improvement of clinical care in diabetes and in training of the next generation of thought leaders in the field. Over the course of my career I have organized and participated in national clinical conferences on Cerebral Edema in Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Management of Childhood Diabetes, Celiac Disease and Diabetes Mellitus, and Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. I have spoken on these topics and other endocrine topics both nationally and internationally as an invited speaker, and as requested at courses organized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Harvard Primed continuing education. I serve as a member of the editorial board of the PREP (Pediatric Review examination group for the Academy of Pediatrics, providing content in Pediatric Endocrinology and contributing to the overview of content in all aspects of pediatrics). Nationally, I have served as President of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society and continue leadership roles in this organization. I am now serving as LWPES liason to a multi-organizational group that is attempting to rationalize provision of diabetes care in this country. In addition, I serve on a group that will work on Strategic Planning for this organization for the next 5 years. I also am on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Journal of Pediatric endocrinology and Metabolism and am the Editor of the Pediatric Section of Current Comments in Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes.

I have also had an active research career, working in the basic laboratory on aspects of carbohydrate metabolism in fetal and neonatal life, and now on developing an understanding of the function of the pancreatic beta cell in order to reconstruct it in a cell less likely to sustain autoimmune damage in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Several recent publications describe this work. I have trained 8 fellows and summer student research associates in the laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. My clinical research work presently is related to the development and conduct of the TODAY study, an NIH-funded trial of treatments for type 2 diabetes in children and Adolescents. I am the Associate Director of the study at the Massachusetts General Hospital-Boston site. I devote about 40% of my time to patient care and have developed the Pediatric Diabetes Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and clinical care center that is appropriately staffed to care for children with the most difficult of chronic endocrine diseases. I also have a special interest in hypothalamic-pituitary disorders and in growth disorders and focus on these areas in my clinical care. Essentially all of my patient care activities are also used as educational sites by fellows, resident, and medical students. Since arriving at MGH, I have trained 23 fellows in the clinical care of patients with endocrine disorders, and of those that have graduated, 15/18

remain in academic positions.I look forward to continuing national and international work in diabetes and pediatric endocrinology, as well as continuing research into the treatment of type 1 diabetes, and a continuing career as an educator and clinician on the local level.
