Some Highlights
I have been studying the Cosmic diffuse Gamma-ray Background (CGB) radiation since
1992. Although the CGB has been studied both theoretically and observationally for more
than four decades, the radiation spectrum characteristics and the origin of it are still not
well known. I analyzed data obtained from the NASA's Solar Maximum Mission (SMM)
satellite that operated 10 years. The extraction of the CGB spectrum from the SMM data
requires accurate understanding of nature of space radiation because SMM was not
designed to make this measurement. My collaborators and I have shown the spectrum of
the CGB that agrees with result from observation of CGRO COMPTEL. We confirmed
that the MeV bump, which had been claimed by some old observations, does not exist.
The results have been presented at various conferences and have been quoted and shown
in several papers (ex. Sreekumar et al. ApJ 494:523) and books (ex. "Gamma-Ray
Astrophysics" by Fichtel and Trombka, NASA Reference Publication 1386, October
1997).
I am also pursuing a theoretical study for the most plausible origin of the CGB in the
MeV region that would be cosmological supernovae. We showed that radioactive decay
in high redshifted supernovae could produce significant amount of radiation for the
CGB. Since our model depends on the star formation rate (SFR), both new observational
and theoretical studies on SFR in high redshift are quite important.
Our theoretical model and the well-measured CGB spectrum allow us to study not only
past star formation but also its associated cosmic chemical evolution. This is a good
example that the gamma-ray astrophysics can provide the similar studies the optical
people can. I am interested in the multi-wavelength approach to this subject.
Dr. Bonnard Teegarden (NASA/GSFC) and I are currently studying the 511 keV
annihilation radiation from the galactic center using the INTEGRAL(SPI) data. We are
also searching for the unpredicted Gamma-ray lines from diffuse sources as well as point
sources with the unprecedented energy resolution provided by SPI. This research
continues as INTEGRAL collects more data.
We have constructed all sky monitoring system on the FGCU Library roof. This system
consists of eight optoical cameras, each covering 60 o x 60
o of the sky, which are
connected computers individually. We use both comercial & self-developed software to
manage/analyze data. Some of FGCU undergraduate students and Astrophysicsists at
NASA/GSFC are involved with this research project. We have detected aver 300 Sprites
withing six months of operation.
