20mph Speed Limits20mph speed limits are being introduced all over the UK, with parts of Wyre included in local plans

In recent weeks, the local press has covered the news that most of Fleetwood is to be included in the new 20mph speed limit, and significant parts of residential Cleveleys and Thornton are also to be included.

The new 20mph speed limit will be in place in residential areas and outside schools by 2013, and in Wyre is being delivered in four phases. Fleetwood and the Cleveleys streets listed in this article are part of phase two and other areas will be rolled out in the next three years.

There is a pdf of a Lancashire County Council leaflet which has been delivered door to door and includes a general map of the areas included in each phase. A more detailed map of the proposed 20mph proposals will be available online when the consultation period begins.

Information released by Lancashire County Council states:

‘There has been a growing demand in Lancashire to introduce 20mph speed limits to address road safety concerns. Lancashire County Council is committed to introducing 20mph speed limits as a response to

the road safety concerns of the public in all residential areas and outside all schools by 2013. The 20 mph speed limit schemes will be delivered in 4 phases across Lancashire.

‘Reducing speed in residential areas and outside schools will make the roads safer for everyone in the community and help encourage people to walk and cycle more and lead to more vibrant communities. We recognise that this will not happen overnight and we need to change the attitude and behaviour of drivers. We want to make driving over 20mph in a residential area socially unacceptable.

‘Recent guidance from the Government recommends that highway authorities introduce 20mph speed limits onto streets that are primarily residential in nature and do not form part of any major through route. The 20mph speed limit is indicated by speed limit signs where the speed changes and the presence of smaller, additional signs at regular intervals instead of traditional traffic calming measures.

Coming out of stall 9 he got a nice toe in behind the early frantic pace and Luke Morris had him travelling soundly enough as he sat mid division tracking the favourite all the way round. As they turned for home it was clear that out of the field of 13 runners there was only Lansing left who was capable of throwing down a serious challenge and him and the favourite settled down to do battle.

The home straight at Lingfield is 2 furlongs long and the Mount Racing Club members who had made the long journey south roared encouragement from the stands as both horse and jockey gave it everything only to be denied by half a length on the line.

Although having to settle for 2nd place this time both Geoff Holden and Andy Eaton think Lord Lansing lost nothing in defeat and said when you consider the front two were well clear of the remainder it goes to show how good an effort it was, just a shame we had to bump into a good thing today.

The horse will obviously improve for the run and on his favoured Polytrack surface judging by today’s performance his turn for winning cant be too far away.

Both Geoff and Andy also think that the switch of stables earlier in the year from Ben Haslams to the Group 1 winning trainer Karl Burke has had a massive influence on things. They say that since the move the horses are performing a lot better and there’s a lot more forward and positive planning regarding future race targets.

The boys are also in the final stages of agreeing on the purchase of a Yearling with Karl Burke and hope to unveil the new arrival in the next couple of weeks. Exciting times lie ahead.

THE MOUNTRACING CLUB NEWS UPDATE

A BLINDING RUN‘A Blinding Run’ were the words used by At The Races T.V pundit and former Jockey Jason Weaver to describe The Mount Racing Clubs Lord Lansing’s run at Lingfield on Saturday 12th November where under a confident ride from Luke Morris he came within half a Length of upsetting the heavily backed favourite Hurricane Hymnbook.

Com

munity B

eatFY7 BeatI’ll start where I left off in my last article...one of my jobs is to make sure that none of you become a victim of crime. Please take all necessary steps to secure your property, don’t leave windows open when nobody is in, set your burglar alarm if you have one, lock things away in your garden, keep an eye out for your neighbours property - above all try to stay one step ahead of a would be offender. Speak with your trusted neighbours and let them know if your house will be empty for any period of time - lets all help each other to stay safe and keep our property safe. Never leave any valuables on display in your vehicles, whether parked on the street or on your driveway and park it in well lit areas if possible. Some basic crime prevention steps really do make a difference. REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS IMMEDIATELY. As Christmas approaches, different opportunities arise for the would be thief, don’t get caught out!! Help us help you.

This month the Fleetwood Primary Schools are taking part in a poster design competition to help us reinforce the message about road

safety and securing your pedal cycles (commonly known as a bike, I don’t know why the police always give it the full title!) There are three age categories, the winner of each will receive a new bike (pedal cycle!) and safety gear and their posters displayed in prominent locations, plus coverage in the local newspapers for them. Road safety always features heavily in our policing activity leading up to Christmas, particularly around drink driving. Enjoy your parties, enjoy your drinks, but don’t drink to excess and don’t drink and drive!! Nominate a driver, use public transport or walk above all else don’t drink and drive!!

You may have seen the reports last week that a final decision has now been made in relation to a review into Lancashire’s Police Stations and Front Counters. Fleetwood will remain as the main hub for officers to work from within Wyre 24 hours a day and our front counter will also remain open as it is now. This is following a three month public consultation exercise which saw over 11,000 people across Lancashire express their views.

Our first new style PACT surgery (Police and Communities Together)

was held at the North Euston Hotel last month. Fleetwood has one surgery now instead of one for each of the five wards. It has moved away from a ‘round table meeting’ and is very much a ‘drop-in surgery’ where you can speak with either your PCSO or your Community Beat Officer on a one to one basis. Also present at the last meeting were councillors from Fleetwood Town, Wyre Borough and Lancashire County Councils. We had a recruitment stand for Special Constables with Special Constables on hand to answer any questions. Your PACT surgeries will always be the last Tuesday of every month at the North Euston Hotel, between 5:30pm and 6:45pm, just prior to the Fleetwood Town Council meeting.

I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas. Finally, if you have any information or concerns, you can contact us at your PACT surgery, by phone on 01253 876611, via our Lancashire Constabulary website or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Thankyou PS Dan Whitaker

SandAid are a collective of amateur unsigned musicians who have recorded an original Christmas song, which is due for download release on the 5th December through iTunes and other leading download retailers. The song has been nearly 12 months in the planning, and was the brainchild of Rob Hulme and his wife Anne-Marie Hulme who were fed up with the tradition of Christmas songs being ruined by the X Factor. Rob was involved in writing the song We’ve Still Got Christmas along with co-writers Ian Hooper and Jeff White, and we wanted to write a song which had a traditional feel, without being too cheesy, and incorporated many of the styles and talents of our fellow Blackpool bands. We live in uncertain times at the moment, and the lyrics try to establish that no matter what pain, suffering, hardship, or loss touches our every day lives, the one thing which remains constant, is how we try to celebrate Christmas, which we hope helps to consider our perspective of life and create opportunities for change. We are also donating 50p from every 79p sale to BBC Children in Need through sales over the entire Christmas period, as we feel that the song also has a meaning for disadvantaged children, some of which don’t

even experience the happiness and values of the festive season.

We decided to call the band ‘SandAid’ following on from the inspiration of Bob Geldof’s Band Aid. The song was recorded back in June at West Orange Studios near Preston, famous for recording the number one hit ‘Brimful of Asher’ by Cornershop, and is a mix of genres, which represent both the modern and traditional styles of music listened to today. Bobby Ball and Black Lace also kindly donated their time, and feature alongside the many amateur musicians and singers who represent a selection of the many talents which perform in the local bars and pubs in and around the Fylde coast area. There are also some up and coming singers involved, along with children from St Chads and Carr Head Schools, Poulton.

It has been twenty one years since an original Christmas song reached the number one position in the music charts, and for that fact we would like to try and get the tradition of a true Christmas song into a pole position this year.

Our song is available to download from and other leading download retailers from December 5th

ews Fleetwood Gym would like to take

this opportunity to wish all our members and the readers of the LINK-Magazine a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!.

2011 has been yet another big year for us, we have continued to grow and know have 11 football teams competing in three separate leagues. Our Under 6’s go from strength to strength and train regularly every Saturday on King Georges 10am, Our Under 7’s and 8’s have just signed up to the Poulton and District friendly League and play games every other week so they can train and develop in the weeks between. At the end of the season all the Under 7’s and 8’s will play in a league festival of football. Our Under 9’s have come on greatly after picking up 14 new players in only two months, they are a new team but are now holding there own and developing into good footballers. After just missing out on promotion last season our Under 10’s have gone strait back into it and are again pushing for a top two position. Some new players have come so the team continues to grow.

Our Under 11’s moved from 7 a side to 11 a side and continue to adapt to this huge jump from a mini pitch to a full adult size pitch!!! A jump that is to much for 10/11 year old children but hopefully the new 9 a side game will help this jump out in the future. The Under 12’s continue to battle on and promotion in there mind. The Under 12’s league is a hugely fought league so we wish them luck next year. The Under 13’s have had a Hugh turn around this year, finishing last season with only 8 players in May they now have a full squad and a change of fortune. At Under 14’s we had such an influx of players that we were able to create another team so now have two teams competing in the Blackpool and District League. Both team are doing well with both teams looking for a promotion push in all the teams are really developing as teams and the players are improving all the time.

We would like to thank all our new 2011 sponsors and our existing sponsors for supporting our teams in these tight time. They are Marina Fisheries(Under 7’s), Link Magazine(Under 8’s), North Wst UVPC( Under 9’s), Smooth Finish Plasterers ( Under 10’s), Port Catering Equipment (Under 11’s), ROAB (Under 12’s), Foulds Metals and Scooby Spares(Under 13’s). Mike Sandersons Electrical’s (Under 14’s Yellows), Chadwicks and Simmons Commercials (Under 14’s Blues) With out your support the teams would be without new kits!!

2011 also brought success when we won back our Darren Smith Memorial Cup, now in its third year this is the first year we have won it as a full club competition. We arranged the new years day dip and raised £1000 for Brian’s Houses Children Hospice, and we will continue to arrange the dip always to raise funds for local charities. On New years day 2012 we will raise money for local girls Molly Robinson and Leah Garfit, if you would like to take part in the sponsored dip then contact Barry Whittaker for a sponsor form on 07775928332. I hope 2012 will bring even more success for us at Fleetwood Gym and to you our members and readers of LINK.

To play for Fleetwood we take players from Reception age up to Under 14’s (School Year 9), then see www.fleetwoodgym.co.uk or find us on facebook!! or contact Barry Whittaker 07775928332

The Tomato Garden An old gentleman lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love, Papa

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Papa, Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are buried. Love, Vinnie

At 4 am the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you, Vinnie

Before you are too damned oldAnother year has passedAnd we’re all a little older.Last summer felt hotterAnd winter seems much colder. There was a time not long agoWhen life was quite a blast. Now I fully understandAbout ‘Living in the Past’ We used to go to weddings,Football games and lunches. Now we go to funeral homes,And after-funeral brunches. We used to have hangovers,From parties that were gay.Now we suffer body aches And wile the night away. We used to go out dining,And couldn’t get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a pill. We used to often travelTo places near and far.Now we get sore assesFrom riding in the car. We used to go to nightclubsAnd drink a little booze. Now we stay home at nightAnd watch the evening news. That, my friend is how life is,And now my tale is told.

So, enjoy each day and live it up...Before you’re too damned old!
