After 4 months, I feel terrible that there i

one person I really wanted to thank bu

    had forgotten.

    Chris Krepski.

He's done a wonderful job over the

previous 3 years as The Link editor. Thi

is a lot more work than I had though, and

requires a good deal of discipline to work

on The Link during those long evening

when my roommate is off playing Need

for Speed on the PC ( =:] ).

I'm not the only one who thinks that Chri

did a great job. At the CASC-OR Annua

General Meeting, The Link won second

place newsletter for club over 100members (more details on the CASC-OR

AGM later in this issue). That was really

    Chris' hard work being rewarded.

As I work on each month, I continuously

compare what I've done with Chris

previous issues. I frequently end up

kicking myself for not being able to

produce at the same level as those issues

and it seems to only make my mistake

(like the missing/wrong dates in the las

    issue - oppps) so jarring.

Anyways, I'm just saying that Chris ha

shoes that are hard to fill, and to thank him

very much for the time he put into The

    Link during his editorship!

ment Track (track has limitations to numberof drivers on track at same time).- Possibly use Mt. Tremblant as a secondevent later in the summer, with less empha-sis on instruction, and more of a lapping/funweekend. From The Drivers Seatby Ron Woltman

Welcome everyone to the Christmasedition of The Link. Happy to see youreyes scanning the pages of OntarioRegion's multiple award-winning clubmagazine.

A large landscape to cover this month sohere goes. The names of your 2001executive and their coordinates are printedon the masthead. We are here to work withand for you.

This is the third time I occupy this post, and I know all too well, that presidentialpleas to immerse yourself in the MCOlandscape, have had modest impact. Myintention is to go to you directly! Theexecutive has been charged to go forth,

ask for help and delegate where required. In other words, bring people into the fold. Thus far, early in the game, I amheartened, indeed, with the positiveresponse to that approach.

For example, I called up Jim Morrow toact as MCO's representative betweenCARS and the club, and yes was theimmediate answer. Thanks Jim. NigelMortimer agreed to act as Chief Instructorfor both the Winter Driving Schools andour Hi-Performance summer events.Mike Lowe is chairing the Trophy, Pointsand Awards review committee; a review, Ifelt, long overdue. He has a mandate toput together a team. Other people will becalling on YOU for help. Reply in theaffirmative. Sherissa Microys acquiescedto show someone the ropes in organizingthe summer driving school, for which sheas ample experience. See her soon. Moreover, she is going to be head registrarfor our July 7/8 Shannonville race. Get inthe starting gate early for that event -MCO's premier event of 2001 - before allthe positions are gone!

Another commitment I intend executingthis year is to ensure the minutes areprinted each Link issue. It is starklyevident to Mike Lowe and I, as we relivethe past during our epic journey throughMCO's history, that attempting to scratchout the rich and ribald history of this club, that absent club minutes is akin to RichardNixon's missing 18-minute tape. It's'history' gone missing!

Adam Mortimer and Jeremy Hamilton aresharing race director duties; Adam tendingtoward 'open-wheel', as he also is ourkarting man, though each will beinterchangeable. Sam Mandia hasgraciously offered his considerableexperience to their collective efforts.Racers - make sure you tell them how you

did each weekend. They are notclairvoyant.

Chris Holmsten has stepped up to homeplate to assume the role of Solo director.Big spot on the diamond, but abundanthelp is promised from the 'old' pros' RobMicroys, Gord Acorn, Richard Muise,Jaak Laan and many others.

Dave Butler is the Rally rep on exec, responsible for liaison with Jim Morrow(CARS rep), along with mailman, my

stand-in, taking care of incorporationpapers, and more.

Basil Chiu is casting his magic in anattempt to increase member participation, promote member retention, spin somepublic relations and sponsorship, thehotline and more. Already, he has put inplace a deal for the club with The TravelEdge, whereby members can takeadvantage of individual, family or grouptravel, and the club benefits. Spaceprecludes replete details here - but Baz

    will explain the benefits.

Past President Rob has promised to playan active role in that position - which, aspast presidents can attest, is a rarityindeed.

I need an organizer for the Winter DrivingSeries, and while much groundwork hasbeen laid, please see me if you areinterested? I going to act as Secretary ofthe Meet for our Canaska CupShannonville race. Rob, Cindy and I areputting together a race committee NOW.Get on board early.

Good news. John Blouin is out of thehospital and hard at work building a brandnew Trans-Am car!

    TTFNthe 'P'.

The Dinosaurs ViewFrom DIRECTOR to VICE-

    PRESIDENT, finallyby David E. Butler

Like a dinosaur that seems to have beenaround for an extremely long time, I guessI have finally made the grade or, at least, I

decided there is no time like the present tomake the transition from a Directorialposition up to Assistant to the PresidentIt seems to have a nice ring to it and itcomes with a key to the ExecutiveWashroo, ...er, make that the ClubMailbox.

Whether to call this the wrap up for theyear 2000 or the beginning of the start forthe true new Millennium in 2001 isdifficult to say and what to call my newcolumn is a problem. Maybe, I'll just callit, "The Dinosaur's View". That does nonecessarily mean that all comments and

thoughts are old hat - it just means that Ihave been involved, like Ronald, for along time.

2000 definitely was interesting yeargoing from our lively discussions abouwhether or not we should get back intoour roots in Rallying to actually setting upand running both a Corporate Rally with asecond well into the planning stage andJaak & Jim's Drivex Highland RallyLooking back, I wish I had given a TSD(Time-Speed-Distance) Navex (an evenintended to require more work by the

Navigator than by the driver) RallySchool to the Learnix crowd. They couldhave used a lot more guidance both for theterms and for the Treasure Hunt portionthat they asked to be included as part ofthe actual rally. The Treasure Huntelement added the need for the driver tobe equally aware of all signs and sightsalong the way. We expect to do a TSDRally School for Club members andinterested Corporate Groups in the comingyear. If it were not quite so late in theseason, this year, it would be worth ourwhile to attempt to try to run a Fall NighRally or an Early Winter Day Rally before

the real winter encourages us to stay in thewarmth of our homes. As Vice Presidenin the new Executive, Ronald expects meto carry on representing the Rallyelements and interests, to which I haveagreed. However, not being as closelyinvolved with the C.A.R.S. - RSO[RallySport Ontario] group, I suggestedthat Jim

    CASC-OR AGM inReview

    by Rob Microys

This past Saturday November 18th,CASC-OR held its Annual MemberMeeting and Banquet. A small group ofMCO was present including myself,

Cindy Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong,Ian Madden, Frank Smith, BryanDickman and Pier Bortot. On to the meatof the story.

The Annual Member Meeting started withthe reports from the various Board ofDirectors.

Laurence Polley presented his report thatdetailed the new CASC-OR 2001business plan. He mentioned the notionof the Canadian runoffs returning. Mostimportantly as was mentioned by almost

all director's reports was the participation, recruitment and retention of existingworkers - this was evidently portrayed inthe fact that the nominating committee forthe region did not have a full slate fornominations to fill the positions up forelection. More on that later.

Art Mosley presented his updated CASC-OR bylaws that were sent out for changesearlier this year to the Clubs. He wasvery distraught that only two region clubshad returned comments with respect torevising the bylaws. Yet more mention

on worker apathy and participation fromclubs - do we sense a theme?

Bob Varey's report indicated we had abanner year financially and in driverparticipation, yet officials' licenses weredown. CASC-OR has two new clubs thisyear, the Honda Acura Driver'sAssociation and Formula TwelveHundred Driver's Association bringing upthe club count to 26. CASC-OR willadminister the Canada Challenge Cupagain in 2001 and that the membersequity in the region is up to $205,813.19

from $170,767.95 in 1999. So the regionis financially healthy.

Gunter Schmidt, presented his race report.Total of 1632 entries, and over 50penalties (bad drivers, bad!) OntarioChallenge constituted most of the entriesfollowed by Canada Challenge, andF1600 and FV1200. The worst news wasthe increase in penalties, of which pit lanespeed violations (hmm, did I have

something to do with that?) and passingunder yellow being the highest and mostconcerning penalties. Look out next yearfor rule changes and strict enforcement!Did I mention worker problems earlier?Well, worker participation almost shutraces down on us last year, something tothink about...

Mavis Burnham had the Ice Race report, despite weather problems, they had 4 racedays with an average of 75 competitorsper day.

Solo II had no report and Solo I had abrief report indicating the success andcontinued growth of the Solo I series inOntario - it included the mention ofmaybe running events a Cayuga in 2001.

Also mentioned was the inception of anew series. The Nissan Challenge Cup.This is a spec series based on the new

Nissan Sentra SE (four door, 2.0l engine)which looks pretty exciting. Cars will bemade available by Nissan at reducedcosts, for full details contact DaveDiedrick at (905) 619-8813 or LaurencePolley (905) 846-5175.

The elections were held, which requiredmilking of the attendees to obtainmembers to run for all the positions. Yournewly elected (all acclaimed)representatives which were elected thisyear include: Laurence Polley (President),Paul Anderson (Treasurer), Mavis

Burnham (Ice Race), Perry Iannuzzi(Solo-I), George Dedopolous (Solo-II).The Vice President and Race Directorsremain on for another term, Art Mosleyand Gunter Schmidt respectively.

Roger Peart from ASN Canada was alsothere, and provided a lengthy report onthe state of affairs of karting whichsuffered a poor year from the Nationalperspective, rallying, with good news thatthe Charleviox rally isattempting to attain WRCstatus, and the fact that FIA

is likely to move back toParis from Geneva.

The banquet was prettygood, with a number ofMCO members making theirway to the podium, including another award forthe Club for its newletter,The Link. Congrats! Thatabout sums it up...

    The TRAVEL EDGETHE MCO'S NEWEST

    SPONSOR

The MCO has entered into a cause-related marketing agreement with TheTravel Edge. They are the local arm of abranchless travel agency based inToronto.

For any business a MCO member doeswith The Travel Edge's Ottawaconsultant, the travel agency will donate20 per cent of the net profit, on thatparticular transaction, to the MCO. Thisoffer extends to family and friendsreferred by MCO members. Said TheTravel Edge Ottawa owner, RobertWilson: "we're new here in Ottawa. Wejust want to let everyone know howcompetitive, if not more so than ourcompetition, we are."

Asked why members should do business

with The Travel Edge, Mr. Wilson repliedwith a grin: "we work harder."

"We're very happy to have The TravelEdge support the MCO," said MCOsponsor relations director, Basil Chiu. "Ihaven't done any business with TheTravel Edge yet. But if they're as good asMr. Wilson says, then the MCO can onlywin in this deal. If service- and quality-wise, The Travel Edge is indiscerniblefrom all the rest, then, honestly, whyshould any MCO member go anywhereelse?"

Many thanks to Albert Cohoe, foralerting the executive to this opportunity.

Morrow be asked to be our Representativewith them. Thankfully, Jim accepted thatrole and our affiliation with CARS-RSOwill be a reality as soon as they send us thenew forms. Still reviewing m y participationin the Rally events during the past year, there was the fun competing in the first

Winter Rally event near Hawkesbury, lastJanuary or February or whenever it was.Setting up the Corporate Rally, brought athrill of a different kind. Generally, I do notlike heights but they don't bother me whenothers are with me or if it's during the daybut I must admit, it took me over an hour towork up my courage to drive over thePaugan Dam between 3:00 am and 4:00 amwhen I was out alone checking the route, one final time. Initially, I thought I wouldsleep until dawn but then I could not go tosleep and the dawn still seemed far away. I

finally did it, but as I said, it took awhile.Later on, when Jim and Jaak werediscussing it after reviewing the route, Ifound that they had a similar feeling - butthey too survived. For the Highland Rally, Iwas considering using the route or, at least,

a large portion of it for the NortelNetworks Corporate Rally (which waspostponed to n ext spring). Therefore, I hadto drive the route to check out the route. Inso doing, I almost didn't make it to myCheckpoint location on time. However, mybiggest scare came just before I reachedthe Ronald Woltman/Nick Berrycheckpoint. My car got completely

sideways (to the road) on some of thoseloose gravel sections. Then and there, Idecided that my car needed better tires fora better grip - BUT, I also came toappreciate what all of the competitors ofthe Drivex must be enjoying. It was anexcellent route and I hope we will use itagain during the coming year. Enough, enough already about rallying!

I guess, whether it is defined as a 2000event or part of the fiscal year whichbegins on November 1st, one of my

disappointments thus far, is/was our lackof participation in the year 2000 SantaClaus Parade. No one offered to organize itand, of course, our best SPECIALEVENTS coordinator, Mike Lowe, wasover in England at the time. Will we be

invited back next year? - We do not knowwhich really is too bad! It seems, therewas a question of PR value - but, for thoseof us who enjoyed taking part in it duringprevious years, its absence broughtsadness at a time when we all should havebeen very happy. We even could have putthe same float together for the K emptvilleKinsmen's Santa Claus parade on Sunday

November 26th (a conflict with the GreyCup, I know) but once again there was noone willing to put the MCO name forwardfor the sheer fun and happiness ofChildren of all ages. Personally, I thinkthat that was a shame, but what do I knowI'm only a dinosaur and that is my view!

So until the next time, we meet, enjoythe coming Holiday Season and we'll seeyou in the new Millennium.

2000 CorporateRally Reportby David E. Butler

The Learnix Corporate Rally wasrun on September 23rd, 2000. Ingeneral, it was a success and it may bedone again next year. However, as arecommendation, a mini TSD RallySchool should accompany the event. This gives both the Organizers and theCompetitors time to get familiar withthe types of instructions likely to beused throughout the event. In addition,if the event was not checkedsufficiently well before hand, this

gives the operator of the CourseOpening vehicle time to determine ifthere are any trouble spots along theway.

Having said that, you can guess thatthere were some problemsencountered during the 2000 event, but primarily the event was basicallysaved by R.Bennett Leckie's priorrally experience.

Nevertheless, an event of thismagnitude could not have evengotten off the ground without thecooperation of the members who

checkpointed and checked the routeprior to its running. Therefore, mysincere appreciation is extended to allof the following workers: GordonGreig (CP 1) , Rob Microys (CP 2 &4), Jaak Laan, (CP 3,5 & 12), RonaldWoltman (CP 6 & 11), Jim Morrow(CP 7 & 9), Mike S. Lowe (CP 8),Basil Chiu (CP 10) and Bennett (CP13). In addition, Bennett did CourseOpening and Scoring both whileworking his Final Checkpoint and atthe finish which had been moved

from the Day Lodge to the Golf Clubby the folks at Mont Ste. Marie.Although Mike Lowe only did oneCheckpoint - taking pictures at theWakefield Covered Bridge, heprovided excellent assistance with theTreasure Hunt portion and helpedwith scoring at the finish. As a finalkudo, both Jaak & Jim took up thechallenge and reconnoitred the entireroute before the event. You have

probably already heard about all theirtrials and trepidations along theroute, so enough said.

As mentioned, above, all routecards were scored and prizes wereissued based on that scoring alonebut, if the Treasure Hunt portion hadbeen included, the overall resultsprobably would have changed thefinal outcome. Anyone interested inknowing those results should contactNigel Harris, President, LearnixCorporation. We appreciated hiscooperation before, during andafterwards. Unexpectedly, heprovided T-shirts for all of the

workers and a vest-type jacket to me.Hopefully, they will choose to haveus do another event for them nextyear.

    2000 ExecutiveMember Profile:Basil Chiu-member,media and sponsor

    relations

"WILL YOU COME OUT TO PLAY?"

This year, I'm widening my scope. Lastyear, I just focused on sponsorship, witha little media relations. This year, I'mincluding member relations.

We can accomplish a lot more, if we allshow appreciation to each other, andhelp our fellow members feel goodabout helping a larger cause than justhelping ourselves.

Why this turn? Any event worthsponsoring has people helping out. You

probably know help is a little scarce inthis club.

If you never see the administration ofthe club, everything is likely fine. Fromthe administration side, we're over half acentury old, and we don't even have apermanent place to hold our trophies.Grass roots doesn't mean we have to beperpetually scraping by on labour andmoney. We could be doing more andbetter with little extra investment.

There are problems. For one thing, thisclub offers nothing to sponsors. Theirperception of us is we're a notch upfrom a couple o' guys meeting insomeone's garage. What we have isesoteric. My job is to figure how tomake it common knowledge, withlimited time, money and help.

We need to add value-cachet forsponsors. And that's the secondproblem: sponsors don't want to be apart of us until we have an event worthsponsoring, i.e.: until we get a bunch ofpeople out to throw a great event (from asponsor's perspective). People don'twant to come out to help until it's a well-

organised event, i.e.: an event withcachet-an event worth sponsoring. Anexample: sponsors don't want to give usdoor prizes because few attend. Fewattend because there aren't any doorprizes.

I'll also invite the media. They tend toincrease cachet for both sponsors andmembers who are thinking of helpingthe group. However, media don't comeout to play until there's a game worthplaying. And those need people!

Enthusiastic people are the value weneed to add to make sponsors want to beassociated with us. People create thatcachet others want to be a part of. Ifyou want this club to be wealthier, and ifyou see your enjoyment being directlyproportional to the club's wealth, thenyou have to be more enthusiastic aboutthe club's welfare. Enthusiasm iscurrently our only commodity.

The best thing is: the more you put intothe club, the more fun you'll have.

I've already analysed the club's situationlast year. We have local high-tech firmsclambering over each other foremployees. It happens what we doappeals to those employees. The clubitself is a demographic and

psychographic match to thoseemployees. I see go-karting and Soloracing to be the best bets, both for theiraccessibility.

Regarding helping out, the executiveexpects to post a duty roster at eachgeneral meeting. Interested memberscan sign up for a task. We'll probably

also distribute a skills and assetsinventory. Many members have statedthey would've helped if only someonehad asked. An inventory will let theexecutive council know whom to ask.And this way, you do what you want todo.

I realise everyone is busy. I'll do mybest to provide specific, manageabletasks, rather than just ask an arbitrary,"can anyone help?"

This is my second year as a member. Istarted last year because I had tocomplete fifty-something hours ofcommunity volunteer work, in a publicrelations capacity, in order to pass acourse at Algonquin College. I stayedbecause I liked it.

I caught the Formula-1 bug in highschool, worked at Jim Russell RacingDrivers' School, and would like to raceonce I figure out how this sponsorshipthing works.

Your club never has enough help.Having sponsors attracts help, and themoney buys nice toys. I know you likenice toys.

    The Torch Has BeenPassed

    A message from your Past-President

    by Rob Microys

I have to thank everybody who came out thisyear to make our Annual General Meeting thesuccess that it was. The turnout at 8:00pm hadme worried as a quorum was not yetestablished and we were short a good handfulof people, but a few quick phone calls beforethe General Meeting, and a few late arrivalsensured that we had enough people to closethe books on the 2000 season. Thanks again,as we couldn't have done it without you - themembers. For those of you who did not attendthe meeting, I would like to introduce yournewly elected (by acclimation) board ofdirectors: President: Ron Woltman, VicePresident: Dave Butler, Directors: ChrisHolmsten, Adam Mortimer, Basil Chiu and

    Jeremy Hamilton.

Thanks to these bold guys to steer the club forthe year! It takes a lot of guts to run for theexecutive.

An aside, thinking that MCO has a problemgetting people to run for the board, the Regionis experiencing even more problems. Twoweeks prior to the CASC-OR AGM, they hadyet to obtain any candidates for the electionsfor Regional office. So I consider ourselveslucky to have had a full slate (but it certainlyrequired a lot of coaxing) at our AGM. I willbe attending the CASC-OR AGM onNovember 25th, and have a full report in thisissue of The Link.

My role this coming year is going to be muchmore limited than last year. Your new

executive is going to have a challenginggrowth year ahead with a number of projectsincluding the publishing of the book, runningthe Canaska Cup race, and continuing to growand expand the club in new areas. Help isneeded to achieve this growth can be given inmany ways, from simply spreading the gospeland attracting new members, to volunteeringpersonal time to events that we run andparticipate in. I hope that you all support your

new executive in their endeavors and help out.

In the meantime, I'm going to continue to beactive on the executive, continuing to offer myopinions and help. I will be spending moretime on the website over the next few monthsas I have more time on my hands, havingpassed on my presidential duties. Look forsome new and exciting changes to the site. Ifyou have any suggestions or desired content orfeatures, now is your chance. I'm hoping tomake the site more interactive, and able to dothings like register for events and such on-line(but don't look for online payment of

registration fees anytime soon, we don't acceptVISA account numbers, yet.) Some membershave mentioned the thought of having a"Members Only" section, possibly evenhaving The Link and other club resourcesavailable on-line to members. If this sort ofthing interests you, and since I am not ableread your mind, drop me a line [email protected] and let me know whatwe can do to make the website better for theclub membership.

A mention of thanks must also be given at thispoint to Craig Baltzer and Anjura TechnologyCorporation for providing us our domain name

(www.mco.org), the hosting of the website, and the electronic services that many of themembers use. Thanks again Craig.

    MCO's Banquet 2000By Sherissa Microys

MCO held its annual banquet this pastNovember 25th at Louis' Steakhouse. 56members, family and sponsors gathered in theirbanquet room, which is on the opposite sidefrom our regular meeting room. It was nicelydecorated by the restaurant staff to myamazement, which left little for me to do.

Prior to dinner we were able to watch a videotaped from that same morning. TSN hadshown a one-hour program about the CanadaCup series for which our own John Blouin wasrecently the chief steward, along with manyMCO assistants. Our club also produced 3 ofthe top 6 teams in GT1 who were highlightedin the show. The show reviewed the 1999 and2000 season in a very professional manner.Hopefully some of you were able to also catchit.

Dinner was amazing with a nice salad to start, before receiving the largest piece of extremely

tender and flavorful prime rib I have ever hadI would find it hard to believe anyone lefthungry. Very delicious deserts of our choosingfollowed dinner. I took the white andchocolate mousse, which was divine!

During coffee the awards were presentedstarting with a thanks to our sponsors whoprovided most of the prizes given out duringthe evening. The list of recipients is listed(Note: one required 300 worker points for themajority of trophies). With about 30 doorprizes also, not many went home emptyhanded.

Hope to see everyone at next year's activitiesand festivities.

The Inside LineA monthly feature outlining

    upcoming initiatives in OntarioRegion

    by Cindy Armstrong

Last November I felt that it was an oppor-tune time for the Ottawa region race driversto be personally represented at the OntarioRace Organizers (ORO) and Race Commit-tee meetings. To this end I made the trek toToronto on the third Tuesday of eachmonth. It has been many years since a rep-resentative from Ottawa has been attend-ance at these meetings; I would assumebecause they are held on a weekday eve-ning and it takes a huge commitment toarrange work and personal life in order toattend. The experience was informativeand - at least once a month - exhausting. I

hope that you, the racers in the club, havereceived some benefit from my being atthese meetings to argue the issues on yourbehalf and get information back to you in atimely fashion. Ever the optimist, I assumethat the lack of feedback I have had doesn'tdisplay total apathy to the process but ratherconcurrence with the results which havebeen achieved.

So ... what's in the works for next year?

    1. A tentative schedule has been establish-ed for the 2001 season:Apr 20-22 Shannonville Spring FlingApr 28-29 Mosport BARCMay 12-13 Mosport BEMCJun 2-3 Shannonville CRDAJun 30-Jul 1 Mosport VARACJul 7-8 Shannonville MCOJul 21-22 Shannonville DACAug 12-13 Mosport BARCSep 1-2 Mosport CRDASep 15-16 Mosport BEMCSep 29-30 Mosport CASCNov 17 TBA Annual Awards Banquet

    2. There is a new series in the works - TheNissan Challenge Cup. This will be a sin-gle marque series featuring the new NissanSentra SE. For further information you cancontact Dave Diedrick @ 905-619-8813 orLaurence Polley @ 905-846-5175.

    3. There will be a single, standardized entryform for all regional events. The formawas approved at this meeting and it will be

    available in the near future.

    4. The entry fee for the OCC will bereduced to $325 to bring it in line with allother regional classes. This still includesfour passes.

    5. The new rule for car numbers has beenfinalized. There is a bulletin providing althe details published elsewhere in this copyof the Link.

    6. A formal process will be developed todetermine how decibel levels will be meas-ured. Restrictions will be phased in over

the next couple of seasons with the worsoffenders being targeted immediately.

    7. Due to the serious health issues posed bythe addition of various noxious substancesto fuel, CASC will be mandating - for 2001- that all F1200 and F1600 cars must pur-chase and run the pump fuel which is available at the track on any given weekend. Ifyou are using any of these substances youshould be aware that they are not justunpleasant; they can be deadly for you andthose around you!

    8. There will be a race engineering work-

shop held in Toronto around the end of February or beginning of March. Details wilbe furnished as they become available.

As always, if there are any issues that youare looking for an answer on please let meknow. If I can answer I will, if not I wilfind someone who can.
