From the fields of Northern Russia comes natural linen –
one of the purest fabrics there is. Sometimes known in Russia
as ‘Northern Silk’, our linen gleams with innate beauty ;
and a sure sign of the real thing – the more you use it,
the softer it becomes.
Pure Russian flax gives linen its unique quality and feel.
The Russian climate is ideal for the natural growth of the crop –
which is renewable with a short cycle. What’s more, every part
of the plant is put to various uses – and that makes flax
one of the world’s most eco-friendly crops.
Linen dates back to 8,000BC and the Pharaohs. Ancient Egyptians admire
its lightness and purity. They could spin the fabric so finely, they could
pass whole linen garments through a finger-ring. They also used it
for embalming mummies – and seeing the soul safely through to
the after-life.

Northeast Europeans started cultivating linen around 2,000BC
– well over a millennium before the Irish linen industry emerged
in the 17th century. For hundreds of years, people have woven
rituals, myths and legends around flax. Eastern Slavs saw
it as an antidote to black magic; and Bohemian peasants thought
that, to become beautiful, children had only to dance
in a field of flax.

In Peter the Great’s time, linen was so popular and had
so many uses that a tax went on flax – the first-ever
standard Government tax to be imposed in Russia. As well as
finding its way into the palaces of successive tsars, many
ordinary Russians insisted on linen for everyday purpose
