Mutualism

Mutualism is the symbiotic relationship in which two organisms o dierent species co-exist in a

relationship in which each individual benets rom one another. Exploring the mutualisticsupporting relationship between various species within the ecosystem. Investigating how their

structure o the relationship is built and how it is inuentially impacts human elements.

“Te doctrine that mutual dependence is necessary to social well-being” “Symbiosis that is be nefcial to both organisms involved.”

Comparison between the Pre-earthquake, Present and CCDU ransportation Interchange illustrates thearea required or the site. Notably large witin all instances o the transportation hub, the interchanges all

Urban Radius

Te placement o the Bus Stops, Bicycle Stations and Courtyards xate itsel with the urban scale and how the public interact within the social environment. It is shown that most people will only walk around 400

metres or 5 minutes to these Intermodal transport acilities.

Literature shows that most people will only walk around 400 metres or 5 minutes to a bus stop and that the

distance they will walk depends on actors such as carr ying bags, age, weather, topography, etc. Te key is totry to have most households within 5 minutes walk o a bus stop. I bus stops are too ar apart, people willnot walk to the bus but i bus stops are too close together, the bus will have to stop oen and the trip willtake a long time. Te spacing used must not only have regard to typical pedestrian walking distances but

also to the attractiveness o the bus route as a sae, convenient and efcient way to travel.

Analysis o previous works by Yvonne Mak, Eric Nakikima and Justin Baatjes investigates the pattern o road network in relation to the citys population and vehicle transport. Illustrated we see that only 18% o

the working poplulation use methods o public transport, where as the remaining travel through private ve-hicles. Evident that more cars are present within Christchurch than the population, these statistics indicate

the increased growth o personal vehicles as opposed to public transportation.

Intermodal ransportationURBAN SRAEGY

Illustrated in all previous and proposed instances o ransportation Interchanges withing Christchurchwe begin to pose the question, why should a transportation interchange be centralised? Could a transportsystem be designed to cater to nodes o ocal points along the city center? Beginning to break away rom

notion o centralisation, the design o Intermodal transit acilities starts to situate itsel through High Street,Cathedral Square and Victoria Street, known as the entrances and exits o the City Center the linear compo-

sition acts as a urban corridor or te transportation system.

Te Intermodal ransit Facilities implement various programmes in which integrates itsel within theUrban Corridor. Tese Facilities Are broken into 4 Phases. Reestablishing Urban Links, Introducing the

Mutualism Plazas, Integration o Furnishing and Connection Shelters.20

Re-establishing Urban LinksPHASE 1

As we analyse the problems o the city and the solution o an intermodal transit acility, we begin to realisethat the city is in a high need or pedestrian activity. Integration o a ‘shared street’ within this Urban Cor-

ridor within the site allows or the reestablishment o Urban Links towards Christchurch.

Te Shared Streets essential goal is an approach in which minmises the use o Private transport vehiclesin this Corridor and the encouragement o pedestrian and public transportation. Te major change o

converting the 4 lane roads o High, Victoria Streets and Cathedral Square curbs this density within thecity inviting more pedestrian ow into the site. As High, Victoria Street and Catherdral Square have rela-tively large street widths the integration o the shared street allows or this pedestrian space. Minimisingthe amount o roads within this corridor use o a One-way tram lane in wic operates through this LinearPassage provides sufcient space. Allowing or trams to travel in both directions implimenting the use o

‘pit-stops’ allows or transits to pass one another allowing time efency while preventing collisions

Networking Courtyard & PavingPHASE 2

Intergration o Courtyards comes at the second Intermodal Facility within the ransport Corridor. De-rived rom the key diagram or the mutalistic relationship, the networking o the courtyards is inormed

through the connections made through relative entrances o buildings within the Precincts proximity. Te

voids within these points o intersections composes te ollowing green spaces and urnishing. Along withthe Urban link paving is also inormed by this mutualism networking along the shared street where as thecourtyard is a design in which integrates programmes within its vicinity to bring them towards the ocal

point o the Corridor.

Looking witin both instances o the Innovation Precinct (Blue) and the Mixed Used Precinct (Orange).Te plazas shared similiar context in its design allowing or green spaces and seating, the courtyards are anintermodal acility in which connects these programmes within this ransport Urban Corridor. Allowing

these precincts to ollow through this linear axis.

Integration o FurnishingPHASE 3

Courtyards inormed through this mutualism o relative buildings brings orth design o urnishing inte-grated within these sites. Voids o these connections creates submerged seating spaces allowing the publicspace or leisure outside o the precincts. Lighting is essentially provided through European Street Lampswhich ollow the paving, the urnishing seating spaces also provide lighting through LED xtures on the

sides o the steps.

Connection o SheltersPHASE 4

Enorcing the mutalistic paving throughout the ransport Corridor, shelters are inormed through thislink. Following the sense o a ‘loop’ the ram Shelter scales the paving through a vertical axis as it sets back towards the paving, moving rom paving, to shelter in one linear coheriency. In consideration o the tram

line, these shelters are situated witin the center o the ‘pit-stop’ island o the lane. Allowing or the shelter tocatered to both sides o the tram, benches acing each other are located or each adjacent side.
