NEWS FROM THE FUTURE! #lineapelle92.
From the 21st to the 23rd of February 2017 Lineapelle opens its doors on the 92nd edition, with figures
still on the increase reinforcing its position as global leader. Not to be missed by anyone who wants to discover the future
THE FUTURE IS HERE TODAY
The edition is number 92. The exhibitor numbers are growing and are nearly 1,200. The season in question is Spring/Summer 2018. The goal is to perceive the market changes and to shine light on its path of creative, productive and commercial development.
Consequently, the future of the leather industry is happening today. You can discover it at LINEAPELLE, the leading international trade fair, from the 21st to the 23rd of February 2017. It is the
reference point for the fashion industry, in terms of exhibition, style and commerce, and the leading companies in products and tanning services, accessories, components fabrics and synthetics are on
show at Fieramilano Rho.
THE FUTURE IS IN MILAN
Lineapelle 92 confirms its growth trend. Compared to the previous edition dedicated to the summer season (February 2016), there is a 4% increase in the exhibitor numbers: 1,198, from 44 countries. In
affirmation of the structural consolidation done in September 2016, there is an increase in Italian exhibitors (+3%), foreign exhibitors (+5%), tanneries (+4%), accessory companies (+9%) and
synthetic/fabric companies (+1%). In summary, the size of Lineapelle has consolidated its position as the most attractive trade fair for the global leather industry. The exhibition surface area has also
increased, it now covers more than 45,500 m², 5% more compared to February 2016. The international
delegations organised in partnership with the Ita-Ice (Italian institute for Foreign Trade) agency are also in arrival in Milan. They will be coming from Great Britain, the United States, France, Spain, Japan,
Sweden and China.
THE FUTURE IS BROUGHT INTO THE LIGHT Lineapelle 92, for the 2018 summer season, has chosen to engage with the creative input arriving from
the future. The trends proposed are encapsulated in the slogan News From The Future! These highlight
the need to break with the stylistic hesitancy of recent seasons and open the doors to freshness and all
shades of light. To do this, imagination must be given space and vitality and the right conditions where
it can find expression. It is no coincidence that Lineapelle has decided to upgrade the exhibition experience for the exhibitors and visitors by confirming the installation of three Trend Areas, and the
relocation of the main area to a more central position with higher visibility: at the entrance of Pavilion 13. The two satellite areas are confirmed within Pavilion 9 (aisle U) and 22 (aisle T). There are changes
to the seminars organised by the Lineapelle Fashion Committee too. Two per day are scheduled for Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd, at 2.30 pm in Italian, and at 4.00 pm in English; admission by paid ticket.
THE FUTURE IS FOR SHARING
Lineapelle 92 enters the social and digital age like never before. The event will be shared live on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and the hashtag #lineapelle92 has been launched for the event. It is the perfect tool for sharing photos, opinions and moments before, during and after Lineapelle. The mobile app can be downloaded from Google Play and Apple Store. It includes the
exhibition catalogue, an interactive map, exhibition timetable and transport and event information. Finally, the portal www.laconceria.it will issue a digital daily paper for the three days of the show, with
updated information, interviews and market analysis, spread throughout a special edition of its Daily
News and enriched with special contributions shared on the pages of Facebook and Twitter.

New light in the Trend Areas. Fresh light shines on the 2018 summer trends. The Lineapelle 92 style is coloured with novelty
and expresses a reassuring freshness.
HERE COMES THE SUMMER After a series of seasons marked by caution and timidity, the creative choices show the desire to break
with inertia and metaphorically “turn on the light”. This sums up the tone of the News From The
Future! It is the mood captured in the trends created by the Lineapelle Fashion Committee for Spring/Summer 2018. They are based on the evolution of new colours, where pastel shades sharpen
and change direction “towards a freshness borrowed from the digital world, while the naturals come in cool tones and materials play with light, shade and iridescence”.
A new yet innovative vibration in the air guides the creative process. This will be showcased in the
Lineapelle Trend Areas, fitted to hold over 2,000 samples selected from the most innovative presented
by exhibitors on their stands.
A renewed showcase rich in innovation. The main Trend Area has been relocated to a more central position, increasing its impact and function: it is now located at the entrance of pavilion 13.
The two satellite Trend Areas are in the locations confirmed in past editions:
- along the Aisle U in pavilion 9. - along the Aisle T in pavilion 22.
There are new developments for the fashion presentations. In this edition, there is an admission fee for
these events (tickets at pav. 15 aisle Z) and they are scheduled for Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd:
- at 2.30 pm in Italian
- at 4.00 pm in English.
Of course, the essential tools for designers and creators must not be overlooked. The Trend Book is on
sale in Pavilion 13, beside the Trend Area (aisle A and Z), alternatively they may be purchased online
from the e-shop at the lineapelle-fair.com portal.

A trade fair system that promotes Italian excellence worldwide. All the latest in Paris, on 7 March. Previews in London and New York, in July. The collectives in Hong Kong and Tokyo
PARIS
Promoting and showcasing the creative, innovative, sustainable excellence of Italian products, in the
shadow of the Eiffel Tower. This is the sense of Lineapelle: Fashion Sustainability, the event that
Lineapelle has organised (in collaboration with the ITA-ICE Italian trade agency) for 7 March 2017 in Paris, at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel. The event is an exclusive chance for encounter and
sharing of the most stimulating ideas in leather, textiles and accessories, selected from those showcased in Milan, from 21 to 23 February by the 92nd Lineapelle exhibitors. Fashion consultant
Orietta Pellizzari has the job of investigating the quality of the materials, their fashion content, innovative charge and possible applications. Lineapelle: Fashion and Sustainability is a new-gen event
that chooses Paris as the capital of a strategic nation for the Italian leather sector. France is, in fact, the
fourth biggest client of the Italian tanning industry, with some 220 million euros in tanned leather
purchased in 2016 (a 6% increase; on preliminary consolidated results, source: Lineapelle | Economic
Service), while for the accessory/component sector it is the third trade destination in the world, up by
3% on 2015. LONDON AND NEW YORK
Two niche events. Two previews that have become must-visits for the British and North American market. Two growing events that allow all the leather sector, from exhibitors to visitors, to get a sneak
preview of trends for the following season. With the next edition scheduled for 11 July 2017 (Ham Yard Hotel), Lineapelle London never ceases to amaze for its capacity to attract not only the big English
brands, but also a vast, stimulating audience of freelance creatives and start-ups , who choose it for its smart, young, informal tone. The next edition of Lineapelle New York is all set for 18/19 July 2017 (Metropolitan Pavilion). This presentation is increasingly attracting not only buyers (+8% at the close
of the January 2017 edition), but also exhibitors, who are offered the chance to strengthen their relationships with the strategic USA market, which for seven consecutive years has increased its
purchases of Italian leather.
HONG KONG, GUANGZHOU, TOKYO
The Lineapelle trade fair system organises the collectives at three shows in Asia. From 29 to 31 March 2017, Lineapelle will be taking a group of about 60 Italian exhibitors to APLF
Leather & Materials Hong Kong, the annual benchmark event for the Far East. On 25 and 26 May 2017, Lineapelle is taking a collective comprising Italian and foreign companies to Japan for the Tokyo Leather Fair, held twice a year and where Lineapelle also has its own trend section and organises style
seminars by its Fashion Committee. A few days later and it’s off to China, to Guangzhou, where, from 31 May to 2 June, Lineapelle will be taking part with a group of Italian companies at the annual edition
of Shoes&Leather. Again in Guangzhou, next autumn will see the new formula presented for Lineapelle Asia.

Leather business overview
The preliminar results 2016 of the leather area express a mixed panorama.
Uncertain perspectives for 2017, with some confidence signal for the second semester.
TANNING SECTOR
2016 was not, globally, a particularly brilliant year for the tanning industry. Manufacturing demand and
the related consumption have suffered from the weak global economic situation, due to the uncertainty
and political tensions that persist internationally. Even in a mostly bearish trend, however, some elements
of positivity emerged.
In detail for the main players, the data related to the Italian tanning sector offer a predominantly negative picture, but with moderate intensity, which seems consistent with the difficult international scene. The sector, which consists of about 1,200 companies and 17 thousand employees, has registered a production
slowdown both in terms of volume (-2% in square meters of finished leather, -9% in kg of sole leather) and in value (-4%). In absolute terms, the national tanning industry, which confirms to be European and
global leader, is estimated to close the year with 120 million square meters of leather produced and a
turnover of almost € 5 billion (of which 76% came from exports). The declines appear to be slightly lower for the main production segment, namely medium and large
bovine leather (-2% in square meters, -3% in value), and for the calves (similar decreases in the medium and large bovine), while sheep and goat leather were the most affected (-4% by volume, 7% in €). The only
growth, albeit minimal, is found in the residual category of other animals. Among the various ranges of
product, the high - accessible obtained the best results.
In terms of market, sales to domestic customers fell by 2.3% while total exports decreased by 5%. Among the main foreign markets of destination of Italian leathers, the US has shown the largest increase in value: +11%. This is the seventh consecutive year of growth in North America, for a total export amounted to
235 million €uro. The other best performers for the national export were France (+6%) and Vietnam
(+4%). Negative results, for the third year in a row, for shipments to the Chinese area, which lost 22%
towards Hong Kong and 14% to mainland China; despite the sharp decline, the Asian giant remains the first international destination of Italian leathers. Considerable decreases also of Germany, Portugal and South Korea, marginal decline of Romania and Poland. Spain and the United Kingdom substantially
stable. As for the remaining top tanning countries, in the rest of the EU France, Spain and UK reported a moderate progression. Positive signs also from Portugal, while Germany, Austria and the Netherlands
showed significant losses. Outside the EU 2016 panorama was negative for China, India, Brazil, Argentina,
Pakistan and, with some exceptions, Turkey. Better panorama in Mexico and North America.
ACCESSORIES, COMPONENTS AND SUBSTITURE MATERIALS
The preliminary results 2016 were slightly positive for accessories, components and substitute materials.
In detail, the performance of synthetics was brighter compared to fabrics and accessories, reporting only some moderate rise. Uncertainty still prevailed for regenerated of leather fibers segment.
Overall, the Italian manufacturers of footwear components, after a gradual improvement in the second half of the year, closed 2016 slightly down (-1.2%), textiles and substitutes conversely resulted slightly up
(+ 1.6%). Stability for small metal parts and accessories (+ 0.5%). These results continue to reflect the uncertainties in the internal market, although at the end of the year seems to have limited the losses. The
positive trend is essentially correlated to the performance of exports, stable for soles and bottoms segment and declining for the other parts of footwear. Overseas sales of textiles and substitute materials grew
overall by 2.2%, mainly thanks to the synthetics (+ 4.2%), which offset the stagnation of the fabrics and
the double-digit drop in regenerated leather fibers. The situation of the remaining production areas is quite diversified and dynamic enough to see a Europe,
driven by Germany, Poland and Portugal. Romania and Spain in slower progression, France stable. Uncertainty in Asian region, particularly for accessories and components. Among the client sectors, positive balance for European footwear. Asia is still affected by the difficult
situation of China, while Vietnam continues to grow. India, Pakistan and Turkey on a declining trend. Similar outlook for leather goods sector, whose preliminary results were satisfactory for Europe and
mixed in Asia. Widespread weakness for leather clothing. With regard to luxury, the top international brands closed 2016 with a positive balance, even with some exceptions, linked to specific product
dynamics. Moderately positive trend for the upholstery and automotive.
TRENDS 2017
The current year began with an unexpected upward trend in prices of the main raw materials for tanning industry. It will likely be the outcome of the Fair to assess if the reasons for this trend are currency related
or purely speculative movements. Surely, the first weeks of 2017 have not registered a relevant and
uniform change of pace in demand and production dynamics. Among the tanneries uncertainty prevails,
at least as regards the first half of the year; there is greater confidence in a more convinced recovery in the second half. The scenario that will affect the manufacturing demand remains as well very uncertain and
definitely not bright. Nevertheless, the footwear sector seems to have expectation of stability while leather
goods see some positive signs, mainly thanks to the awakening of some important markets. Brighter horizon for luxury segment; confirmed dynamism in automotive.
