New Business 4th and last Tech Session for the year will be at British Car Restoration Services, LLS with Adam Key. It will go over prep for driving and

show season. MG 2016 –Robert Rushing – 696 cars registered so far. If you are yet to register, make sure to include all who will be attending with you

when you do. The credit card reader is back up to date. If you trailer a car there you cannot park the trailer in the hotel parking lots. There is a separate lot nearby for trailer parking. There will be a professional DVD done of the car show and a copy can be pur-chased for extra. Extra event nights and activities have been added if you wanted to sign up for something but couldn’t do to space restrictions. A lot of unique cars have already registered.

Rich Berger mentioned that last Sunday’s paper had a lot of good one tank car trips for anyone that was interested. Robert Guinness was presented an appreciation award from Simon Dix on behalf of NAMBGR. Robert had helped out with legal review

and work on getting a certificate for the website background information for NAMBGR. This Saturday is the MO Endurance Rallye. Starting at 7am, meeting at Starbucks in Westport Plaza. It will have a Civil War theme. This Sunday is the Chicagoland Swap Meet. May 14th will be Fling in the Spring, drive to Springfield, IL. Do some Lincoln stuff and stay at the Carpenter Street hotel. New Cars and Coffee will start up on the 2nd Saturday of the month at Ballpark Village, who will be giving out coffee and other things. RUBCO – Wednesday, April 20 at 9:30am at Denny’s on Midland. John Mangles stated that he attended a British Motor Trade Association meeting where they are going to be donating to McPherson

College for a scholarship to their liberal arts degree to restore old cars. Would like club members to think about donating to this from our club. There may be a video of the program presented at the next meeting.

May meeting will be held at the Ferguson Brewing Company. Simon Dix asked if anyone in the club will take over the club website. He has done it for many years and is becoming too busy with

NAMBGR duties. Please pass the word as someone needs to replace him by October of this year. Samantha Templer asked who was in charge of the Facebook page for the club as it also needs updating. Folks thought that Janel

Demick and Steph Barnes had started it, but more research will need to be done.

Buy/Sell/Trade Ron Birke – has a 59 roadster project that he needs parts for Lee Fox has a rubber bumper B gas tank, needs to be coated, but otherwise it is free Jerry Goecker – has various MG parts for sale, MGB engine w/ tach drive, 67 B & GT & chrome bumpers.

Attendance prizes were drawn. Meeting was adjourned at 8:10pm. Respectfully submitted, Carolyn Westbay, St. Louis MG Club Secretary

Chairman’s Message by Bob Bentzinger

The month of April saw our last tech session of the year (detailing) and our premier driving event, the Mis-souri Endurance Rally where we went to various Civil War sites. Both were well attended. There was only team brave enough to want to run the full (24 hour) ral-ly and they decided to run the mini-endurance rally since they had no competition. The winning team of Lee Fox and Andy Ackerman persevered despite fuel pump issues. Robert Guiness’s MGA gave up in Ken-tucky and was towed home during the wee hours of the morning after the team slept(?) in the car till help arrived. I drove my roadster with my with navigator

Ranney advising. We met our first problem when the Mississippi ferry near Hickman Kentucky was down for repairs and we had to backtrack to Cairo Illinois. I then made a classic driving error in Fredricktown Missouri. As Ranney so eloquently put it “When you got to the fork in the road, you took it”…time to head home with my tail between my legs. Congratulations to all who participated and thanks to Rally master Adam Key for his hard work in setting up the rally.

I was thinking about when I first got my MGB, several organizations including the MG club of St. Louis put on TSD (Time Speed Distance) rallies. I rallied with a friend I worked with at Emerson Electric. We alternated between my MGB and his Toyota Corolla. TSD rallies are challenging timed events over a set course divided into stages. You are given route instructions as well as various av-erage speeds to maintain. The CAST (Change Average Speed To) instruction happens a number of times at various waypoints during each stage so you have to do a lot of on-the-fly calculations be-cause you are penalized for arriving too early or too late at the end of each stage. Some of these ral-lies included gravel roads in the Mark Twain National Forest and were quite exciting when sliding sideways into the unknown! We only had one major problem in my MGB when the clutch master cyl-inder gave up somewhere in the forest primeval. As we sat there pondering our fate (no cell phones) the “sweep” car came through to check for stragglers. I told the sweep car driver about the problem and he then proceeded to tell me how to drive the car without the clutch…not recommended but possible. My friend Bill pushed the car to get it rolling and I jammed it into first gear. Bill then dove into the car and we made it back (50 miles?) to within a block of home before we had to stop and push it the rest of the way. That rally was a character building experience.

Our next meeting venue has changed from Ferguson Brewing Company to J.J.’s Restaurant due to a double booking and Fling in the Spring (May 14-15) is our next driving event.

Downshifting with the Editor B y A n d r e w R . A c k e r m a n

As I am learning how to work on my own car and to become more of “wrench”, I find myself ruing the moment I decided to take band in high school instead of shop. Band has not helped me at this stage of my life. Lately, I am really feeling like Michael Corleone in the Godfather 3 when he says “Just when I thought I was out…… they pull me back in!” What I mean is that just when I think I know what I am doing and feeling confident about my mechanical skills, figuring out what to do, I realize that I really know very little and the reality brings me to ground. The slightest little problem brings on a whole new level of learning. Sometimes presenting a steep learning curve. I am also realizing that although the internet brings a wealth of information, it also means there can be an overload of opinions and way overthinking of a mechanical issue. Everyone has an opinion.

Many thanks to Lee Fox for providing excellent navigation and wrenching skills during the Missouri Endurance Rally. The drive was really fun and icing on the cake was the taking first place. Having fuel pump problems and distributor wire issues put a doubt on ever finishing the event. A great deal of luck, planning , and excellent weather contributed to a day to remember.

It is hard to believe, but this month marks the one year anniversary of my becom-ing the editor of The MG Metro Gazette. As I have said in the past, this newsletter is all about you and your MGs so please keep the articles and pictures coming to my attention. Try as I might, I cannot make it to all of the events, so your help with pictures and write-ups really helps. I made it though the tough non- driving months with plenty of articles and really appreciate the help. I am also open to new ideas and thoughts so if I am doing something wrong or you would like to see more of a particular article, let me know!

This month’s “ as seen in the wild” was spotted on Westwood Drive just off Wydown Blvd in Clayton. A 1980 LE MGB.

Technical Session #4

Auto Detailing 4/18/2016

British Car Restorations was the site for the fourth and final technical session for 2016. Adam Keys made a fine presentation on keeping your car in show room condition. The tools of the trade includ-ed a auto duster, wire wheel brush, soft bristle brushes, washing mitts, terry towels for drying and microfiber towels for fine detail. Adam prefers the two bucket method of washing the car using auto washing soap to strip the dirt and remove the old wax. The two buckets are: one for the actual washing mitt and soap with the other bucket used for rinsing the mitt off in fresh water to remove the dirt from the mitt. This prevents the dirt from being ground into the car itself and causing fine scratch marks.

There are three types of polishers: single direction with variable speed, orbitals, and dual heads which will not burn through to the paint. Various bonnets or pads are used depending on the appli-cation (either polishing or waxing). Paper towels are preferred for cleaning glass and fine detail cleaning is made with toothpicks and Q-tips.

For polishing, set up the process in levels. First, use wool pad and rubbing compound to remove material on chalked paint finishes. Be very careful at this stage not to remove too much and actually remove paint. Second, do a machine polish. Third, do a ultra fine pass with a foam pad.

Auto Detailing continued

For chrome, Adam recommends using Simichrome, Turtlewax chrome polish, and Flitz. On really pitted chrome, there is no cure and you will most likely have to have the item re-chromed.

After washing you can use a clay bar to remove imbedded contaminants. Make sure you work in small areas and always keep the clay bar wet. Acetone will remove road tar and bugs.

For rubber bumper cars you can aggressively scrub the bumpers and then use Mothers “Back to Black” as a finishing product. You can also paint the bumpers but that is a longer process and was covered in a earlier technical session.

Carpets can be vacuumed and cleaned with commercial carpet cleaners and for deeply faded car-pets, Rit Dye can bring them back to life. Make sure you use gloves when applying the dye or your hands will be stained for a long time!

Waxing is the final step which will bring a nice shine to the car and help protect it from the elements

For wheels, use Dawn to cut the grease and road grime and the wire wheel brush to get in the small crevasses. Use a lot of water and small strips of towels will help “ floss” individual wire spokes.

Many thanks to Adam Keys and British Car Restorations and Services for a educational evening! Photos and article by Andy Ackerman

The MG Centre - by Robert Horzmann

Before the MG Club of St. Louis was formed there were other MG clubs in St. Louis. The MG Car Club in England indicated that there have been clubs in St. Louis since the late 1940s. I do not have information on the earliest clubs but I have some information on the St. Louis MG Centre which was the MG organization in St. Louis from 1958 until the 1980’s.

The MG Club known as the St. Louis Centre was begun in the spring of 1958. After having spent the previous winter talking about forming a club, John Tobin and Bob Pfeiffer gathered a group of owners and enthusiasts together to form the club. The early spring was taken up by or-ganizing the club. By June the club was ready to go forward with the election of officers and formation of committees. Bob Pfeiffer was elected President. Application was made and approved to become a Centre of the MG Car Club in England. Events were organized by the club for the summer.

Bob Harris was elected President in June of 1959. He served through December of 1960 which was slightly longer than the normal year term. The term of office and the fiscal year were changed to match the calendar year for simplicity. These early year brought success to the club and a welcome increase in the activities in the St. Louis area.

Bill Hallenbeck was elected and served as President for 1961. Stuart Conklins design for a grill badge was chosen from fifteen designs pro-posed by members.

In1962 Stuart Conklin was elected President. Bill and Marie Hallenbeck went to Europe and presented the MG Car Club with a St. Louis grille badge. They were successful in dealing with lower membership than the MGCC would have likes. This clarification opened the door for more membership in St. Louis.

In 1963 Stuart Conklin was re-elected and club continued with activities. A bus was chartered to attend the Lake Elkhart June Sprints. The week-end was a success and from its description was greatly enjoyed by the attendees. In October the club hosted Captain George Eyeston while they toured the U.S. for BMC. Several hundred people attended the event and watched early racing films and enjoyed hearing stories from the “good old days of racing”.

The Elkhart tour was repeated in 1964. The club was blessed with a new bus and the driver from the previous year. The tour was unnecessary in 1965 because the racetrack in Wentzville was opened. The club now could attend SCCA racing at Mid-America Raceway.

In the spring of 1965, the club was visited by F. Wilson McComb who was at that time the general secretary of the MG Car Club. He now is best rememorized for is books on MG. Herb Rose served as President that year.

The history of the club beyond this point is not available to me at this time. By the last years of the club, early eighties, some of our current members we part of the St. Louis Centre. Bob Benzinger was active. These were people who shared our love for MG and created a club that lasted over twenty years. Great job.

Missouri Endurance Rally—4/16/2016

It could not have been a more beautiful day to hold the Missouri Endurance Rally. Competitors vied to visit four Civil War locations (and to provide proof) in the shortest amount of distance. Entrants could only use devices that were available when their cars were manufactured (no cell phones and GPS) therefore paper maps ruled the day. Only pre -1981 British cars are allowed.

Here are the final results:

With three others that did not finish.

Although eight Civil War sites were available for the full rally, everyone chose to visit only four. These sites were: Battle of Fort Davidson /Battle of Pilot Knob, Jefferson Barracks Civil War Muse-um, Battle of Belmont in Columbus Ky, and Battle of Island No. 10 in New Madid, Mo.

The event was very challenging and well planned. Thanks to Adam Keys for being Rally master and providing a most rewarding day!

Missouri Endurance Rally– a perspective by Bob Horzmann

Why the hell would you want to do that? My neighbors are relatively accepting of my hobby. One, when told about the Missouri Endurance Rally, had the classic response. The thought of driving the day in an old car might cause cautious people to roll over in bed and forgo the idea. Personally the 20th running serves as a testimonial to the interest in completing something most would not attempt..

Let’s start with some basic observations. If your car runs well enough to drive to the wineries in St. Charles County then with preparation it will work for the endurance rally. Preparation includes car-rying tools and fluids to keep the car going. The best thing to do is to remember your cars faults. Mine leaks oil. Answer carry oil. You can plan for the expected.

I would also recommend not eating any food that might cause you to have gas. This causes real concern later as you drive.

What you might have trouble with is the unexpected. First every sense is critical. You find unusual noise to be terrorizing. Trucks next to you muffle the sound of your car (or should) and can leave you wondering about how your car is running. Spring Peepers (small frogs) are easily mistaken for the gears in your transmission grinding off. If suddenly your car sounds like a diesel locomotive, check for the diesel on the tracks next to the road. (Bismarck Missouri).

Somewhere near the intersection of BB and Highway 8 the car coughed up a hair ball. It refused to run for 30 seconds. Primal fear. It did restart and run normally for the next 3 hours. I changed to roads where tow trucks could find you. Mileage concerns faded.

I cursed the MGs poor headlights for the last two hours which was explained at the finish as hav-ing only the right side working. It was a burned out bulb. The car was running hot because the cooling fans stopped working. The fans worked when the wire was wiggled. The strangest thing was the top retainer clip which holds the top, was gone. I found it in the trunk of the car the next day, but the cup and screws where not found in the trunk. I don’t know how it got there or how the screw escaped but I’m open to suggestions. The gas cap disappeared but I think this is an age re-lated mistake on my part.

The worst that happened was the driver’s door stopped working. I spent the last part of the rally climbing over it to get either in or out. There is a couple, who were sitting on a bench in New Ma-drid who thought this was the funniest thing they must have seen that day. Bob Benzinger ob-served that there was no longer any door gap at the rear of the door. His recommendation was new sills. Truth be told my upper hinge doesn’t hold and lets the door sag. I went out to pry the door back into place and after an hour, and as a final thought I tapped the door button with a ham-mer. On the third tap it went further in and the door opened. I set a land speed record getting a can of WD-40. Problem solved.

Would I do it again? Yes, but I would suggest that the rally master find bathrooms first and then find the landmark. Most of us have reached that age.

Cars and Coffee returns to Westport! Saturday, April 16 marked the arrival of the monthly event involving several of our fa-vorite pastimes. Now we can spend a few hours on Saturdays admiring other enthu-siast’s cars, drinking coffee, and talking shop. Although many of the MGs were in-volved with the Missouri Endurance Rally, our marque was well represented.

Some news regarding other Cars and Coffee events in the area! Cars and Coffee West (located in Mid Rivers Mall on the first Saturday of the month) has been tem-porally cancelled due to problems with the mall management. This may be resolved but the event was not as well attended and may lack support. On the other hand, a new Cars and Coffee has been added for the second Saturday of the month from May to August located at Ballpark Village. Here is a link with further details:

www.stballparkvillage.com/entertainment/event/9363

The event will run from 10am to noon and all participants will get 3 hours of free parking and discounts at Ballpark village restaurants. Open to all types of cars!
