Math Seminars are a study hall/tutorial class for students.
Math Seminars are opportunities for students to do a lot of skill and practice each day.
Math Seminars offer students opportunities to make connections to the real world.
Math Seminars are designed a prep for the MSA.
Students should get the same grade for their math class and Math Seminar.
Warm-Up: True or False
![Page 5: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The course will be engaging and is designed for hands-on activities and real-world connections
This is not a period of “study hall” Opportunities for skill review are embedded,
but most of the learning will be in context of meaningful problems
Natural opportunities for disciplinary literacy are also built in
Course Expectations

Unit 1: Designing a Scale Model Culminating Project: Select an object to
design a scale model (either larger or smaller than original). Create the model to scale.
Math Standards: Ratios & Proportional Relationships
Activity 1: Exploring Unit 1
![Page 14: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Open the Unit 1 Page and begin to look through the plans for the week. As you work, consider:
◦ What do you like about the unit?◦ What questions do you have?◦ What planning will you need to do for this unit?
Activity 1: Examining Unit 1
![Page 15: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
In your table groups, brainstorm as many potential objects, emblems, characters, mascots, etc. that students may want to select as the design of a scale drawing.
Be prepared to share ideas with the entire group.
Activity 2: Selecting a Design
![Page 16: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Select a recorder. The recorder should download the “Scale Drawing Research” file from Edmodo group. At the top type the object your group selected.
Each team will have 20 minutes to research relevant information on the Internet.
When finished, publish your “Scale Drawing Research” to Edmodo group.
Activity 2: Selecting a Design
![Page 17: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Download the files from the other groups to see what information was generated.
How might you use an activity like this in the classroom?

Activity 3: What is UDL?
Universal Design for Learningis a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn.
UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

Begin to examine the available curricular resources.
Unit 1 (Designing a Scale Model) is expected to take about 25 days.
With your table partners, begin to think about what your first few weeks of class will look like.
◦ What are the most important math concepts/skills students need to develop in this unit?
◦ How will you pre-assess students for background knowledge?
◦ What are some strategies for differentiating when students are struggling?
Activity 4: Beginning to Plan
![Page 30: Lindsay Kelley & Charlene Linkous 9:00-12:10 Room 609.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022013101/56649e765503460f94b77bb2/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
