The
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may dis-cern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?" - 1 Kings 3:9
The school year quickly approaches. Teachers have shaped my life. And I have not always been as appreciative for this impact. As teachers, students, and parents begin to think about the school year, many tasks de-mand attention. I want to offer a few thoughts for the new year. I encourage students to see your schooling as your work. It may be that there are times, and I hope there will be, when you really enjoy your studies. But I hope you will see that just like your parents go to work, school is a place where students have responsibility to work. I also want to encour-age you not to give up when you find other students seeming to learn something more quickly than you are learning it. Too often students will think that there are subjects they just are not good at. A student who is willing to learn will overcome. Your attitude will make a great difference to how far you advance in a subject. And you have control over your atti-tude. I want to encourage parents to see your children's teachers and the school administrators as allies. I think everyone of us, over the years, has had some frustrating encounter where it feels as if a teacher or administrator is just against your child. While this can happen, it seems to me that on many instances people feel this way when it is not the case. The more teachers and administrators are supported by parents the better they will be able to serve the students. They have many students to care for. And for teachers, I hope you will feel encouraged that being an educator is important work and a witness to the Lord. When no one else knows the struggles you are enduring, know that the Lord does. Blessings, Luke

Ladies Sunday School Welcomes You
We welcome ladies to visit us on Sundays at 10 a.m. in room 115 ground level.
Those in the Ruth Dorcas class are from all walks of life and come together to
dig deeper into the Bible and build friendships.
During August, the class will continue their study in the Book of Ecclesiastes.
Lessons will include: There’s no use arguing with God about your destiny; Sorrow is better than
laughter; The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race; A lesson about dead flies, snake charmers,
and little birds; This Old House; and Solomon’s final conclusion.
Eva Mason, teacher, graduated from Appalachian Bible College in WV. She
worked two years with Scripture Memory Mountain Mission teaching Bible in 24
public schools in Harlan County, KY. She also did office work at Camp Nathanael
in Kentucky and counselled campers. In 1969 Eva and family moved to Parsons,
WV. There she retired after 30 years working with Tucker County Schools, serving
15 years as secretary at Tucker County High School and another 15 years as sec-
retary to the Superintendent & Board of Education. She joined First Baptist Church
and served the Lord there for 42 wonderful years. During that time, she worked
with Baptist Youth Fellowship, and enjoyed teaching adults & youth. Playing the
piano for services and the junior choir as well as directing the adult choir were
things she enjoyed.
Eva and her husband moved to Staunton in 2011 to be near their two daughters, six grandchildren
and now, great grandchildren. They joined Linden Heights in 2012. She began teaching the Ruth Dor-
cas Class in 2013, is our church secretary, plays the piano for Sunday evening services, and plays
ukulele with the Linden Jammerz. Eva and the class look forward to meeting ladies of any age that
are seeking Bible study, friendships and joyful times together.

Christians are like the several flowers in a garden, that have each of them the dew of heav-en, which, being shaken with the wind, they let fall at each other’s roots, whereby they are jointly nourished, and become nourishers of each other. —John Bunyan
There will be a children/youth volun-teer training event at First Baptist in Staunton, August 11 at 1:00 p.m. Ashlei Woods, WRE teacher at Wilson Ele-mentary, will be discussing topics such as brain development, hidden rules of poverty, connections with kids and making them feel valued. The Master’s works
As a skilled inventor, John Muir was a prized factory employee in Indianapolis. If not for an industrial acci-dent in his 20s, he may have spent his life making things indoors. But after recovering from being tempo-rarily blinded, Muir headed on a 1,000-mile walk to “consider the lilies.” He then began doing that literally, as a botanist. To his résumé, the 19th-century Renaissance man added naturalist, glaciologist, conservationist, founder of the Sierra Club, and Father of National Parks. Yet when Muir was asked what he did, he replied simply,
Coming up roses
A rose can be quite eloquent When standing all alone; It needs no vast accompaniment, No pompous, royal throne, For beauty is not always found In suave sophistication, But often stands just by itself As simply God's creation!

ON THE WINDING ROAD
Our journeys of faith are rarely straight and level roads.
Instead, we meet winding, rugged paths, often navigating
the way on our hands and knees. But it’s when we don’t
know where we’re going that we must set our eyes on
Christ and trust His direction.
