A welfareworker, visitingin the home ofone of her cli-ents, discovered a crippledchild that had never gone toschool because he was unableto walk. Her compassionateheart was deeply touched byhis condition and she decidedto do something out of the or-dinary for him.

Initially, she took him to adistinguished orthopedic sur-geon who performed severalprocedures to correct theproblems in his legs. Then apodiatrist corrected the prob-lems with his crooked feet.Little by little he learned towalk and run and play. Healso learned to read and writeand made enough progress toattend school with his friends.

One day, in telling this storyto a group of her friends shesaid, “He is now a grown man.And I want you to tell mewhere you think he is andwhat he is doing.”

After a few moments her col-leagues began to reply: “A doc-tor?” asked one. “No,” she re-sponded. “A minister?” won-dered another. “No,” she re-plied. “I know,” said a third,“a welfare worker because ofyour influence on his life.”

“No,” she said with tears inher eyes. “He is now in prisonserving a life term for murder. You see, we spent all of ourtime in teaching him how towalk and run, read and write, but we did not teach himwhere to walk and what toread and who he should com-municate with.”

David prayed, “Teach meYour way, 0 Lord, and I willwalk in Your truth; give me anundivided heart, that I mayfear Your name.”

What happens when God’speople do God’s work? Is thereany evidence to His mercy andgrace? Can those around usactually see Him at work?

The Psalmist said that“Surely His salvation is nearthose who fear Him, that Hisglory may dwell in our land.”

In other words, when peoplebecome born again - acceptGod’s salvation through faithin Christ - there will be evi-dence of God’s Kingdom onearth. Christians will busythemselves in working withthe needy, bring hope and helpto those who are suffering, seek justice for those who arewronged and establish rulesthat are just and fair.

In Psalm 85:11 we read,“Faithfulness (to God’s Word)will spring forth from theearth, and righteousnesslooks down from heaven.” If webelieve the Word of God, we areto live the Word of God andthat means we are to do what-ever is within our power toestablish His Kingdom onearth.

Whenever people’s heartsare right with God, we seeGod-things happen. The abo-lition of slavery and the end ofchild labor followed a resur-gence of faith in God. The Sal-vation Army came to life whenGeneral Booth was convictedthat God called him to bringGod’s love to the needy. See-ing children, who were ne-glected, ignorant and hungryburdened Robert Raikes tostart “Sunday” school. Manyeducational and charitableinstitutions came into exist-ence because God’s peoplesaw God’s children in needand were convicted by HisSpirit to do something aboutit. Evidence that righteous-ness on earth comes fromHeaven!

Part one

By Gene PalenoAs some of you may know,

in order to keep ahead ofwhat’s chasing me, as I growolder, I work out. As often as Ican I move iron around at theGym. That keeps me strongenough to carry my oatmealfrom the kitchen to my officein the morning, walk a quar-ter mile down the hill andback to my well in the field tocheck the well, and pick upmy copy of the Linden Herald from my mailbox down by theroad. That’s good.

However, although I’m stronger, my back is not muchstraighter. I still have to watch how I walk down the hill so Idon’t fall on my face because I might trip over my size 14 shoesor lose my balance. I finally figured out two good answers formore flexibility and a straighter back; Larry’s sheet of stretch-ing exercises ... and Tai Chi.

Deciding to bite the bullet, I visited one of the County’s freeTai Chi classes. But before doing that I had to do what I al-ways do (being a writer) for any new project; research at theLibrary.

I read the first book; The Harvard Medical School Guide toTai Chi. It said Tai Chi could improve my balance, my flexibil-ity, and SHARPEN MY MIND. That hit home. If the boys andgirls at Harvard didn’t know what’s what who did? Besides, IfI lost everything I have, I would hold on to what is between myears until ‘the last ditch was crossed and the last dog washung.’... as the old saying goes. Not that I have ever planned tohang any creature.

I take a history of Tai-Chi legend from one of my books thatwill be published one day soon, The Medici Solution. The leg-end says ‘Tai-Chi Ch’uan, is the forerunner of Karate. Karatehas been a part of Confucian philosophy for three thousandyears. In 26 AD, Shih Huang Ti, China’s first Emperor, wasdriven from office. The Ch’in Dynasty collapsed. Liu Pang, a

petty village official who lived in Central China, saw his oppor-tunity. After many battles as a guerrilla leader, he proclaimedhimself Emperor of the new Han Dynasty.’

‘Liu Pang exacted heavy tribute from the peasants. For thenext 200 years, the Emperors that followed Liu Pang kept thepeasants in subservience. To keep them helpless the peasantswere not allowed to own bows, swords, spears, or any weap-ons, on pain of death. The brutal aggression of the Han offi-cials forced the peasants to search for ways to defend them-selves without these weapons.’

‘The Buddhist monks came to their aid. They devised uniqueskills of unarmed selfdefense. The 108 positions of Tai-ChiCh’uan became a secret ritual. The Monks preached that physi-cal discipline guaranteed immortality and Tai-Chi gave themharmony with nature and promised their souls a place in theafter-life.’

‘A peasant revolt began in 204 AD and, legend tells, it beganin Red Pepper village, a tiny community beside the Hsin rapidsin the Yangtze Gorge.

Next week: The conclusion. The revolt begins.

Interested community members are invited to attend the nextmeeting of the Linden Historical Society. The meeting will beheld at the Linden F&M Bank on Thursday, June 28 at 7 PM.Future projects will be discussed.

In conjunction with California Small Business Day, Assem-blyman Heath Flora (R-Ripon who represents Linden) recentlyhonored Barnwood Arms, a Ripon based firearm retailer andgunsmith, as the 12th Assembly District’s Small Business ofthe Year for 2018.

“Barnwood Arms has become an institution in my home-town of Ripon,” said Assemblyman Flora. “They’re a familyowned and operated small business of 37 years and I was ex-cited to have John, Joe and Paul Mangelos at the Capitol to-day to receive the award.”

First established in 1981, Barnwood Arms is celebrating 37years serving the firearm needs of law enforcement, sports-men, collectors, and anyone with self-protection needs.Barnwood Arms is a full service gun store and shooting rangeoffering safety classes and a wide range of secure storage op-tions.

“We are so honored to be recognized by Assemblyman Flora,”said Paul Mangelos. “Our family business prides itself on therelationships we have built within our community, and on ourcommitment to promoting safe and responsible gun owner-ship.”

Held annually, California Small Business Day is sponsoredby the California Small Business Association and gives Legis-lators the opportunity to honor outstanding small businessesfrom their districts. Honorees are invited to Sacramento toparticipate in a daylong event that includes speeches from leg-islative leaders, workshops, and an award luncheon wherehonorees are presented with a special award by their legisla-tive representatives.

Linden sports awards

Dear Reader - including all of you who peruse this weeklydiatribe even when I’m not pontificating about an issue re-lating to sports - this week will complete the tale of NBAofficial, the amazing and always mak-ing the right call (at least in his ownmind because he was, after all, THERichie Powers) who knew without adoubt that when fans discovered hewas officiating, thousands of hoops afi-cionados would storm the arena justto see Powers do his thing - but firstsome brief comments are necessaryabout a few interesting people who, likeTom Wolfe, deserve to be recognized.

First is Michael Anderson who passed away at the age of98, a noted film director during whose career he directed“Around the World in 80 Day” which won five Oscars,“Logan’s Run” an uneven but nevertheless interesting sci-ence fiction extravaganza and the World War Two epic “TheDam Busters” the thrilling climax of which inspired the at-tack on the Death Star in the original “Star Wars” and oth-ers of note, including “1984”, “Operation Crossbow” and“The Quiller Memorandum”.

Of course, I always attended an Anderson-directed filmbecause I was an Anderson and whenever a date wouldcomment during the credits of one of his films, “Say ... hehas the same last na...” I would nod knowingly and mur-mur something to the effect that he was a third or fourthcousin, thereby impressing my companion to good effect.

I also mention Michael Anderson, director, because myeditor/ publisher and boss was kind enough to send me aNY Times clipping of his obituary and, as we all know, theGrey Lady’s obituaries often contain the best and most ac-curate writing in that renowned daily’s pages.

Having had an interest in photography for some years -which was a good thing because I was a partner with myfather in the Tracy Camera Shop for more than a decadeand I grew up working there after school, except duringfootball or track seasons when I was participating in thosesports as a Tracy High Bulldog - I read with great interestand sadness, of the passing of David Douglas Duncan whocovered WW 2 and the Korean and Vietnam wars from thefront lines, his work depicting soldiers and civilians caughtin the horror of war. Duncan was wounded several timesand was one of the most influential photographers of the20th century and a peer of LIFE magazines AlfredEisenstaedt and Margaret Bourke White.

My Linden grandparents had a closet full of LIFE maga-zines from Vol. 1, No. 1 of the “new” LIFE that first ap-peared in 1937 to the present day and on many a visit tothe family ranch house I’d spend a few hours pulling LIFE’sout of that closet and immersing myself in the weekly pa-rade of history in those volumes. It’s where I became awareof David Douglas Duncan and used many of his images asfoundations for my own artwork.

This was another NYT obit sent my way by Brian Reilly, the brain and brawn behind The Herald.

Then, I was stunned and saddened by the obituary ofMargot Kidder who gained a measure of popularity withher co-starring role in the original Christopher Reeve Su-perman epic as raspy voiced Lois Lane. Kidder was 69 andhad appeared in more than 130 TV shows and theatricalfilms and her work in “Superman” and its sequels put herat the top of the stardom heap in Hollywood. She was alsoan environmental activist.

But Kidder’s obituary didn’t mention what I’ve always feltwas her best role as one of the titular siblings in BrianDePalma’s weird, grotesque and extremely effective horrorflick “Sisters” a truly disturbing film from start to finishand Kidder’s performance fascinating and brilliant. But,hey, your mileage may differ. However, if you’re willing torisk a few sleepless nights after seeing a film, take a look at“Sisters.”

Now, what about Richie Powers? This egomaniacal NBAofficial considered himself to be da Man on the court, anarbiter who was never, ever wrong, a towering, pudgy, sil-ver-haired presence who was omnipotent and ruler of allhe surveyed on the NBA hardwood.

So, in 1976, the Phoenix Suns were in the NBA Champi-onship series playing the legendary Boston Celtics on theunique parquet hardwood in the legendary Boston Gardenthe legendary - in his own mind- Powers made one of themost horrific gaffes in NBA history and here’s how it wentdown.

With only seconds remaining in regulation, a Phoenix Sunplayer hit a bomb that tied the contest and John Havlicek, legendary guard/forward of the Celtics (in case you hadn’tnoticed, there was a lot of ‘legendary-ness’ present thatevening) ran up to Powers, Havlicek’s hands in the “T” po-sition yelling at the same time “Time out! Time out! Timeout!” and Powers backed away from Havlicek, shaking hishead, saying “No. No. No.”, waving his hands at the shout-ing Celtic, finally turning his back on the gesticulating bas-ketball player as time ran out. Havlicek’s frustration at be-ing denied his timeout by Powers was obvious and he be-gan ranting at the veteran, egotistic official until RedAuerbach, Celtic’s coach, led him away, saying somethingto the enraged Havlicek, something that instantly calmedhim down.

You see, Dear Reader, that at the time all this occurred, the rule in the NBA was that if you called a time out andwere out of time outs and therefore having none to call, itwas, first, incumbent on the official to call the time out andthen, because you’d called a time out when none were avail-able for your team, you Were assessed a technical foul.

Both the baseball and softball teams qualified for sectionplayoffs and the baseball Lions finished third and was 2 for 2in the Division 5 bracket, defeating Gustine 9-1 and Bear River4-3. The Lions lost to fellow Mother Lode League foe Argonauttwice - 4-5 and 1-3.

The Lady Lions softball squad also took third place whilegoing 2-2 with wins over Bear River, 6-0 and Hughson - 8-2 -while losing to Escalon 7-8 and Hilmar 4-8.

All LeagueIn baseball Isaiah Corona, Chris Fisher, Noah Fry, Silvano

Gelsomini and Ridge Holquin were named All Mother LodeLeague.

Carly Lucchetti, Gabby Herrera and Hannah Ortega werechosen All Mother Lode League in softball.

Linden’s All Mother Lode league representative among theLions swimmers was Thomas Dondero.

Jacob Rieberal was selected to the Golf All Mother Lode Leaguesquad.

Chosen to perhaps the most prestigious of all the All Leagueteams are those athletes who qualified for the All AcademicMother Lode League team as they represent the essence of thestudent athlete at the high school level.

Those student athletes included Vincent Cao and RhysVaughan, varsity men’s golf, Rachel Albritton, Andrea Angulano,Giselle Hernandez and Robert lzquierdo, varsity co-ed tennis;Emily Zmurk, varsity track and field; Emily Dondero, GabbyHerrera and Katelyn Messersmith, varsity softball; ConnerFriedman, varsity baseball; Thomas Dondero, Alina Guerrero,Isaac Herrera, Bridgette Humphreys, Sarah Luck, HannahNelson, Angelica Ramirez, Vanessa Reyes, Victoria Riley andKarina Tapia, swimming.

So, Powers was obligated under the rules at that time, tohonor Havlicek’s request for a Celtic time out and then awardthe Phoenix Suns a technical foul free throw which would havegiven the Suns a chance to win the game by one point withonly one second remaining.

But Powers, for whatever reason - perhaps he felt the Celticsdeserved to have the opportunity to win the game, not to lose iton a self-inflicted technical foul due to Havlicek’s error. ThusPowers deigned NOT to call the technical on the Celtics andthe Boston’s went on to win the game in overtime and the se-ries in five games to take the NBA Championship trophy forthe 11th time.

As far as your ‘umble correspondent is concerned, the Celticsshould have given Richie Powers a share of the winner’s moneyfor his egregious favoritism at the end of that game.

And there you have it, a case of grotesque favoritism by asupposedly impartial official. And it was something similar tothis that drove official Jack Madden to call a technical foul onWarriors announcer Bill King for his stentorian courtside de-nouncing of Madden’s obviously wrong call against the Dubs, thus marking the only time - as far as I know - that a teambroadcaster has been nailed with a technical! Bill King setanother record that night with his co-play by play announcerHank Greenwald rendered nearly speechless by the occasion.

As Sacramento Kings broadcaster Grant Napear often sez:“If you don’t like that, you don’t like NBA basketball!”

clients going home with 50-to60-pound sacks and ling cod

averaging 15 pounds. Most ofthe rockfish are yellows, blues,

coppers, vermillion, chinas,Bolinas and quillbacks. Most

ports of call say that the oceanconditions are great for this

years salmon fishing. This isattributed to the brown water

due to upwelling and the num-ber of bait fish and krill in the

area.

Monterey BayThe fishing conditions have

been tough in Monterey Baydue to very rough seas. On-

less windy day the charterboat fleet have put their clients

over limit of quality rockfish, including big yellows, blues,

and coppers without any prob-lems. There are a few salmon

coming off of Mulligan’s Hill. There is plenty of dirty water

out there with plenty of baitfish and loads of krill. Whale

watching is a very popular ac-tivity to take part in as well.

Take time to go out and en-joy the great outdoors either

fishing or just going out toenjoy the sights. Stay safe to

fish another day. Until nexttide have a great

outdoor;adventure along withsome good fishing.

Colusa boat rampThe City of Colusa located on

the upper Sacramento River

have been working to create anew boat launching facility

within the city limits. Logis-tics, weather and river flows

have delayed the project in thepast. If all goes well construc-

tion should begin on Satur-day, June 11 and the facility

is projected to be completed in120 days or less from the

starting date. This means thatanglers and boaters might be

chasing salmon from a brandnew ramp this fall. This project

has been long overdue to fish-ermen having access to the

river.

WHEN MINING TYCOON George Hearst

purchased 40,000 acres for $30,000 for a

cattle operation in the Santa Lucia Mountains

in 1865, he paved the way for the construc-

tion years later of one of the world’s most

grandiose private residences.

Built at a reputed cost of $30 million by

Senator Hearst’s son, Publisher William

Randolph Hearst, La Casa Grande contains

thousands of irreplaceable art objects, some

of which date back before Christ.

Formerly accessible only to invited guests,

the Hearst Castle and 123 surrounding acres

were deeded to the State of California in

1958. Travelers, who once could get no closer

view than through a coin-in-the slot telescope

in the seaside village of San Simeon, may now

tour this State Historical Monument.

It is difficult to avoid superlatives in de-

scribing the 100-room main house with its

lofty Spanish towers, magnificent Italian

gardens and Greco-Roman temple and pool.

Three guest houses, La Casa del Mar, La

Casa del Monte and La Casa del Sol, like the

more imposing La Casa Grande, are lavishly

furnished with centuries-old tapestries,

Roman pillars of marble, Venetian settees,

Moorish tiles and Persian vases.

Haunt of the Famous

The Assembly Room, where such guests as

Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw and

Calvin Coolidge gathered before dinner, is 86

feet long, 31 feet wide and 23 feet high.

Hand-carved Italian church choir stalls form

the paneling along the old ivory walls. Four

Flemish tapestries, once the pride of the

Spanish royal family, depict the history of

Scipio, the Roman general who defeated

Hannibal. Visitors now may closely exam-

ine hand-carved tables, antique settees,

rare candelabra, a 16th Century fireplace

large enough for a man to stand inside,

and elegant rugs.

No less imposing is the Refectory, or

dining room, which was Hearst’s favorite.

The carved ceiling came from a 16th

Century Italian monastery while the walls

are lined on two sides with ancient choir

stalls from a Catalonia cathedral. Colorful

festival banners with the crest of noble

Siennese families hang high above these

carved body rests once used by monks to

lean against.

It has been said that Hearst spent a

million dollars a year for 50 years combing

the world for the treasures of San Simeon.

No royal palace ever boasted an outdoor

pool as magnificent as the Neptune Pool.

White marble faced with very-antique

marble, its pillared colonnade leads to an

ancient Greek temple in which is a depic-

tion of Nereids and Neptune.

Used as Summer Retreat

The Hearst family began using the ranch

as a summer retreat soon after they

acquired it. As a boy, William went there

when he was not touring Europe or enjoy-

ing the social events of his native San

Francisco. In 1887 his father gave him the

San Francisco Examiner and thus was

launched a vast publishing empire which

eventually included 30 newspapers, 15

magazines, 8 radio stations and several film companies.

Hearst began erecting the three guest houses in 1919 and

La Casa Grande in 1922. Despite the efforts

of a small army of workers for 28 years the latter was never

completely finished. Hearst died in 1951 at 88.

The Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is

located in San Luis Obispo County, five miles from State

Highway 1.
