Greetings students and their families,

It is with great excitement that I welcome our students back for the 2012-2013 school year. I know for our students, as well as our families and communities, there are a lot of changes that will finally become reality with the start of school on Monday, Aug. 27.

In my opinion, the key to how successful our cooperative effort will ultimately become is the degree to which our communities are willing to work together. The word that constantly comes to my mind is, “WE.” It is of utmost importance that we create a culture of “WE” rather than a culture of “US” vs “THEM.” If we approach our cooperative work in this manner, and with the mindset that our job is to provide the best educational opportunities for all students, regardless of what their address may be, then we will be successful.

I believe that both communities know how much time and effort we have put into the planning and preparation of the academic cooperative. However, regardless of how much time, thought, discussion, etc., we have put in, there will still be things that we may have failed to consider (and I’m not trying to make excuses in advance). What I want everyone to understand is that there will be adjustments to our work and decisions that will still have to be made.

Everything we have done in preparation has been done with the best of intentions and with the information we had available at a particular point and time. As we progress, acquire new information, discover areas that need to be addressed, etc., additional changes could be necessary. What I am asking is that as communities we are willing to be patient as we make adjustments to create the best possible cooperative structure and educational system for the students of Lind and Ritzville.

Finally, it is important to me that you know that I have extremely high expectations for our two school districts and our cooperative school system. I believe that our children deserve our very best effort and that they all deserve the opportunity to learn the skills that will prepare them for the rest of their lives. I pledge to each of you that we will work tirelessly to create the best school districts, cooperative, and system for our children and communities.

Our intention in putting this informational insert together is to help make the start of the school year as smooth as possible for everyone. New website makes debut

The Lind and Ritzville school districts are in the middle of creating a brand new cooperative website.

Our new website address is http://www.lrschools.org.

During this time of transition we ask that you are patient as we are in the daily process of updating our new website.

Thank you!

The question many people will ask is, “What are staff members going to do with one hour per week that will benefit students more than the hour they would have spent instructing students?” This is a fair question.

First of all, content specific and grade level teams will focus on a deep understanding of the state standards at each grade level and for each content area. Teachers will make decisions related to the importance of each and every standard and how much time to spend teaching each skill. Once we have a solid understanding of each and every standard, and have planned the amount of class time to spend on each skill, our focus will shift to assessment.

Following our focus on state standards, teams of teachers will spend time discussing how to assess the standards they have identified for each course and grade level. Common assessments can be created, utilized and analyzed by staff members. Our teacher teams will then be able to utilize assessment data to analyze their practice, how well students learned the specific standard/skill, and can plan together on how to provide interventions (for students who need additional help) or enrichment activities (for students who have mastered the skill).

Overall, the purpose of the weekly late start will be to work on our individual and collective practice in

order to provide the best possible education system for all students.

As school districts we know that a weekly late start may adversely affect some families in the area of childcare. We apologize for any inconveniences that will be created. However, we want to assure our communities that we will use the release time intentionally and that we will focus our efforts on standards (what we teach), instructional practice (how we teach), assessment, intervention and enrichment. We are also committed to providing periodic updates to the public related to our release time, what we are working on, what we have accomplished, next steps, etc.

Finally, to avoid confusion with the beginning of the school year, Labor day, etc. we have decided to begin school at the regular 8:35 a.m. start time on Monday, Aug. 27 – first day of school. However, starting on Monday, Sept. 10, we will begin utilizing our weekly late start on Monday mornings. A Monday morning late start will mean that school will start at 9:35 a.m. instead of our regular 8:35 a.m. start time. Therefore, bus pick-ups, student arrival times, breakfast, etc. will all be bumped back one-hour.

This year promises to be an exciting learning experience for your child. After a long summer break, the staff and I are thrilled to see our students return and also to meet and welcome students and families who are new to the Ritzville community this year.

The Ritzville Elementary staff strives

to provide a rigorous, engaging and safe learning environment every day, for every student in every classroom. The staff is highly trained and committed to providing educational excellence to ALL students.

It is our goal for students to understand what they are learning and how this learning is relevant and connected to their future. We want our students to feel connected to their classmates, to their teachers and to the rest of our dedicated staff.

As the principal of Ritzville Elementary, I believe that:

Ritzville Grade School: Education is a partnership!

Principal Cheryl Henjum enjoys spending time with some of the Ritzville Grade School students!

As the Principal of the Lind Elementary and the Lind-Ritzville Middle School, I view my responsibility as the educational leader as an exceptional honor. I appreciate your willingness to trust my staff to give your children the skills needed to become successful lifelong learners.

This year we will be beginning a new chapter in the story of education at Lind and Ritzville. There will be challenges along the way and unforeseen opportunities to change some of the best-intentioned plans.

The administrative and teaching teams will be working hard to improve the way we teach. Our late start Monday’s will allow us

to work together as teams of teachers to become more focused and intentional in the way we teach your children.

The thought of students learning in the classrooms, vocational hands-on learning skills, hearing the music coming from the band room, the art room full of creative designs and the halls filled with students when the bell rings, makes me smile. I can’t wait to see what the future brings.

LIND SCHOOLS: Building lifelong learners for the future

Lind Elementary has been a school-wide Title 1 School since 2009. Being school-wide gives us much more flexibility in how we serve ALL of our students. Student assessment data drives our instruction and student groupings.

Within our school-wide Title 1 program we have the flexibility to move students into and out of small intervention groups as students meet their academic goals.

A school-wide Title 1 school has to have a school improvement plan that speaks to how we are going to obtain better learning results for our students. This

plan requires us to use research based curriculum and strategies, attend professional development, involve parents, and be willing to change in order to obtain higher test scores.

The Title 1 intervention staff consists of a certified teacher, Susie Strohmaier; and two paraprofessionals Glenda Jenkins, and Janet Sanger.

All Lind Elementary parents will be invited to a Fall Meeting that further explains this program (an invitation will be sent out in October). If you have any questions about the Lind Elementary Title 1 program please feel free to contact the Lind Elementary School at 677-3481.

Lind-Ritzville Middle School LAP Program

The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) is a state funded program that provides assistance in the areas of reading, language arts, and math. Student selection is determined from the Washington state’s MSP reading and math tests, and from Lind-Ritzville’s district reading and math end-of-year tests. A composite score sheet is developed to find eligible students in the areas of reading and math. Qualifying students may be served in LAP funded daily reading and math classes taught by the following certified teachers: Maureen Harder, Richard Taylor, and Shanon Davis.

Washington State requires Student Learning Plans for all students who do not make benchmark on Washington State’s MSP tests. Teachers, students, and parents all make up the learning team in developing this plan.

Students will be moved in and out of LAP funded classes as they meet the academic goals stated on their student learning plans.

Our goal is to help our students build the necessary skills to meet benchmark on Washington State’s MSP tests given each spring.

Alert Now InformationAttendance:Students that are absent (10 minutes late) will be recorded in the computer and an automatic phone call will come to your home to inform you that your child is gone, unless you call the school office to excuse the absence. If you know your child is at school and you get a call, it’s probably because he/she was more than 10 minutes late for class.

Other Alert Now Information:If school is ever closed because of weather or other issues, the automatic phone system will call you to inform you of what the next steps will be. Local TV and Radio stations will also have announcements with the necessary information.

Dear Parents, Students and Community Members:

Seventeen years ago, I decided to become an educator. I wanted to make a difference in the world, to make a difference in the lives of young people. As your principal, my passion and desires are no different than when I first became a teacher, and that is to provide the most effective education possible for students. Of course my skills evolved over time, but my focus has never been lost. The way I see it is, school systems have 181 days to make a difference and not one day should be wasted on anything less than high quality teaching. I want all students enrolled at Lind-Ritzville High School to receive the highest quality education possible. One that prepares each of them to be the best they can be as productive citizens, as positive leaders in the future, and as well-rounded human beings.

In order to create the most effective educational system possible for our students, all of us as adults in our school community must demonstrate strong leadership and support for our students. I want to share with you some core values I possess as a leader: students are the reason “why,” establish positive genuine relationships, and strive for excellence in all we do.

Students are the reason “why” as

educators we are here to serve our students. The important work we do is not about our individual interests or desires. Instead, the work we do is about each and every single student who walks through the hallways and into the classrooms of our school. As educators we need to embrace individual qualities of our students and allow them to dream and

grow by providing them with the necessary skills to become responsible young adults.

Establish positive genuine relationships: Relationships provide a means to the most important end of our work – the education of students. Just as our students, we, as adults, must adapt to each other’s relational needs. This can seem to be challenging at times; however if we are genuine and reflective about building our relationships then we will clearly see there are times when we will need to build relationships, times to maintain current relationships, and times when we will need to re-energize and renew our relationships.

The goal of positive, productive relationships is to be reflective and genuine so together we can better serve the educational needs of our students.

Striving for excellence in all we do! We, as adults and as leaders, must be lifelong learners ourselves. This year, I challenge all of us to continue to grow and improve as a learning community together. Together the most effective classrooms are those in which the teacher, the individual students and parents are each committed to creating a positive and effective learning community and environment. If each of us, as individual lifelong learners, models the attitude of continuous improvement and commitment to the advancement of our learning community, the results will be magnificent.

I am truly honored to be the principal of the Lind-Ritzville High School. The 2012/2013 year is going to be the beginning of something great!

Ritzville Elementary School InformationPreschool Registration and Classes: Classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 11, and registration will be open on Aug. 13 during office hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the elementary school. The preschool teacher will contact parents and notify them of the exact days and time their child will attend school. Preschool sections will only run Tuesday through Friday. There will be no classes on Monday for preschool students.

There will not be a mid-day bus running this year. If your child is attending the morning session they may be brought to school, but will need to be picked up at 11:30 a.m. If your child is attending the afternoon session, they will need to be at the school by 12:30 p.m. and transportation home will be offered if needed as school is dismissed at 3:20 p.m.

Elementary School RegistrationIf your child was enrolled in grades K-5 last year, they WILL NOT need to register again this year. However, if there are updates that need to be made, please contact the elementary office after Aug. 13 to make the necessary changes.

New students will be able to begin registration on Aug. 13 during office hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Parents who want to enroll their child in kindergarten will need to fill out a new registration form.

Welcome to Kindergarten!If you did not register your child for kindergarten in the spring, please stop by the elementary office after Aug. 13 to fill out registration paperwork. Copies of immunizations and birth certificates are necessary upon enrollment and are necessary for your child to attend kindergarten.

Depending on the number of students who enroll in kindergarten, there may be two sections. This would mean that there would be a Wednesday, Friday and every other Monday section and a Tuesday, Thursday, every other Monday section. Diane Leffel, the kindergarten teacher, will send out a letter prior to the first day of school notifying parents which kindergarten section their child is slotted for.

Elementary Supply Lists:All K-5 teachers have posted the 2012-2013 supply lists to the district website. Please visit http://www.lrschools.org to see specific requirements for each grade level. A hardcopy of all supply lists will be available at the elementary office starting on Aug. 13.

Medication at School:If your child is required to have medication at the school (inhaler, Epi-pen, etc.), please make sure you stop by the office to fill out the necessary paperwork prior to the first day of school. Your child’s safety is our number one priority! Please help us make sure we are accurately informed and have the medication necessary prior to the first day of school.

High School Information

Open Campus During Lunch Time For Students in Grades 10-12: Students in grades 10-12 will be allowed to leave campus for lunch provided they have parent permission. A form releasing the district of all liabilities will need to be signed prior to the first day of school. The school will keep a record of those students who do not have permission to leave campus.

Closed Campus During Lunch Time for Freshmen: Freshmen students WILL NOT be allowed to leave campus during lunch this year; however, if the freshman student lives near the school and driving is not required the student will be allowed to go home and eat lunch provided the student has parental permission.

Closed Campus for Classes That Are Not Held Within the High School Building: Students who have classes at the elementary building or AG shop will not be allowed to drive to those classes. Students will be required to walk to all classes. This precaution is for the safety of all students. There is plenty of time between each class for students to reach their next class without being tardy.

Registration: Parents and students may pick up registration forms starting on Aug. 13. Our counselor Lindsey Ross will contact students who are new to the district and get them registered for the necessary classes after Aug. 22. Lindsey Ross will also meet with students and parents regarding the graduation expectations required by state of Washington.

First Day Packets and Essentials:Information packets and yearly paperwork will be mailed home to parents before the start of school. There will be health forms, internet user paperwork, lunch release information, etc., that need to be read, filled out and signed by parents and students, so that we will have current forms and information in the office for all students. The completed forms need to be turned into the high school office on the first day of school. In the packet parents will also receive a picture packet with prices, packet information and an envelope to return with money for purchasing pictures.

Picture day will be on the first day of school. Even if students are not purchasing pictures all students will have their picture taken on the first day of school for ASB purposes. In the packet parents will also find information about purchasing student health insurance. The way that this insurance is purchased has changed from last year, so please take time to read the information enclosed in the packet if you are interested in purchasing student health insurance, all student athletes and cheerleaders need to have health insurance.

Schedule Changes: Any student who wishes to modify or change their schedule may stop by the high school and see Mrs. Ross after Aug. 22.

Parking: Students may park in the parking lot near Gilson Gym

or the gravel area across from the elementary play field. Parking permits are not required.

Clubs: Students will be offered opportunities to participate in a variety clubs that are established at Lind-Ritzville High School. Students may access information regarding these clubs by stopping by the high school office.

Homecoming: The festivities will begin on Sept. 17 and run through Sept. 21. Please look at the district website to view athletic game times and locations. Dress-up days and ASB activities will be updated on our district website as well.

School Handbook: It is encouraged that all students and parents review the school handbook. This year the handbook has been modified to highlight important items that are essential to the safety and well being of each student at the Lind-Ritzville High School. A full view of the handbook will be available online or in hard-copy form at the front office.

Teacher Websites: Teachers will be uploading class syllabuses and course requirements to the district website. Parents and students are encouraged to communicate with teachers on a consistent basis. By having constant communication parents and students will be informed of the academic progress that is taking place. Teachers are always available to meet with students during school hours and parents are encouraged to make appointments to meet with teachers as needed.

Locker Assignments: Students can stop by the office as early as Aug. 20 to get their locker number. Lockers are assigned in random order to all students who are enrolled at the Lind-Ritzville High School.

School Supplies: Depending on the classes that each student is signed up for, the class requirements may vary. The basics that each class will require are: lined paper, pencils, pens, binder, calculator, etc. Students will receive further information after Aug. 27.

There are several changes that will occur within our transportation department during the 2012-2013 school year. To begin with, as we begin the academic cooperative (grades 6-12), we will have town stops identified in both Lind and Ritzville. Middle school students in Ritzville will be picked up and dropped off at Gilson Gym and in front of the high school. All high school students in Lind, that live in town, will be picked up and dropped off at the Ag Shop building in Lind. On Aug. 20 we will be mailing pick-up and drop off locations/times to middle school students who live within the city limits of Ritzville and high school students who live within the city limits of Lind.

In order to make our transportation system flow as smoothly as possible we will be limiting changes to pick-up or drop off locations (if an actual move has not occurred). We are trying to avoid the constant alteration of routes and times because of daily requests for different pick up or drop off locations. Obviously, in emergency situations, or when a plan has been discussed ahead of time with the transportation supervisor, we will be flexible in our alteration of routes and plans.

Another significant difference to our transportation services for the 2012-2013 school year is that we will not be offering mid-day transportation for our pre-school programs in either district. However, pre-school students who live out of town and attend pre-school in the morning may ride the bus to school (on a regular morning route), and pre-school students who live out of town and attend classes in the afternoon may ride the bus home from school (on a regular after school route). The elimination of the mid-day preschool transportation was a very difficult decision and we apologize for any inconveniences that this change may cause.

With the beginning of the academic cooperative we will have Ritzville Middle School students in Lind and Lind High School students in Ritzville. Students will be expected to ride their regular bus home after school unless they are participating in athletics (for athletes there will be a daily practice shuttle). Our goal is to avoid students staying unsupervised after school because they know they can ride the practice shuttle home. This will not be allowed. The only time students who are not involved in athletics

will be allowed to ride the practice shuttle is if prior arrangements have been made with the building principal because a student is staying to receive extra assistance after school (principals will communicate after school program dates/times to parents after the start of the school year). In this instance, the student will have a permission slip signed by a school administrator which will allow them to ride the practice shuttle.

Finally, we have spent a considerable amount of time discussing how to handle transportation options for students on game days (middle school and high school). We will begin the school year by utilizing the following policy: students may stay after school to watch and support our middle school and high school athletic teams. Students will then be allowed to ride a shuttle after the game that will either take them back to Ritzville (middle school students) or back to Lind (high school students). This shuttle will leave exactly fifteen minutes after the last varsity home game. Students will be responsible for making sure they do not miss this shuttle. This part of our transportation work will be a very taxing piece. It will be difficult for us to keep track of which students stay, where they go after school, which students need transportation home, and which students stay and ride home with parents, etc. Therefore, it will be essential that parents and guardians communicate with their children. As was mentioned, we will offer a shuttle home fifteen minutes after each athletic event. However, it is impossible for our districts to be responsible for students from the time school ends until the end of the athletic event. It will be up to parents and guardians to know where their students are and what they are doing. Our districts are committed to regular game supervision and a shuttle back to the student’s home district (transportation).

We know there are and will be many changes to our transportation work. Therefore, the keys to success will be our ability to communicate the options we will make available and a constant line of communication between parents/guardians and students.

USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS PROHIBITEDCurrent school laws of the State of Washington and Ritzville School District policy prohibit the use of tobacco in any form on school district property. The Board of Directors and your school staff realizes that this will be an inconvenience for some patrons. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

DRUG & ALCOHOL USE AND ABUSE PROGRAMPolicy: Any student possession, use, transmission or distribution of substances classified as illegal drugs or alcohol will not be permitted nor condoned.

Rationale: Student use of alcohol and other mind-altering drugs is illegal and interferes with the learning process. These drugs are capable of producing the organic disease of substance abuse and chemical dependency.

The School Board recognizes that the presence of alcohol and other drugs in our society poses a difficult problem to pupils, their parents/guardians and the schools. The Board strongly urges abstinence from alcohol and other drugs on the part of students in order that their development can reach full intellectual, emotional, social and physical potential.

To assist students in dealing with decisions relating to drugs and/or alcohol, the Board is committed to the development of a program which emphasizes:• Prevention – Focus on classroom instruction,

guidance services and school climate.• Intervention – Identify students involved with drug/

alcohol use and abuse and initiate activities toward elimination of such use/abuse. Involve school resources, parents and community inpatient or outpatient services.

• Aftercare Support – Facilitate the re-entry of students to school or other appropriate educational program following inpatient or outpatient treatment.

• Necessary Corrective Action – Enforce prohibitions against student possession, transmission or use of illegal drugs or alcohol. Apply suitable school-related disciplinary measures, supplemental to law enforcement action.

• Student and Parent/Guardian – The primary obligation to seek assistance rests with the student and his/her parent or guardian.

The Board shall seek the support, cooperation and coordination of public and private agencies through the Community Substance Abuse Committee. Such committee shall include membership from the district instructional staff, students, parents, state and local government law enforcement personnel, and the county coordinator of alcohol and drug treatment or a representative of other treatment service providers.

School staff shall work with students, the home and community to develop and implement a comprehensive program of prevention and intervention.

Procedure: Necessary corrective action –• Any student, while on school property or while

attending a school-sponsored activity, who sells or distributes drugs or any substance to any other person shall be reported to a law enforcement agency and shall be recommended for long-term suspension or expulsion.

• Any student, while on school property or while attending a school-sponsored activity, who possesses, uses, consumes or exhibits the effect of having consumed or used alcohol, drugs, narcotics or other mood-altering substances not consumed or taken at the direction of a physician, shall be recommended for a long-term suspension of a minimum of 10 consecutive school days. The student and/or parent/guardian may, in lieu of suspension, request that the student participate in and agree to an alternative program developed by the Student Assistance Committee of each respective school.

• Any costs of participation in any said programs shall be borne by the student and/or his or her parent or guardian.

• Failure to comply with and adhere to all the

requirements of programs and/or services shall result in a recommended suspension of a minimum of ten consecutive school days.

STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Ritzville School District’s policies and procedures concerning student rights and responsibilities (behavior, attendance, discipline, etc.) are published in the Student Handbook and are available in each school office.

HOMESCHOOLING DECLARATION REQUIREDIn compliance with state law, parents providing home-based instruction to their children must file a statement with their local school district to that effect by Sept. 15, or within two weeks of the beginning of any public school quarter or semester. FIREARMS OR DANGEROUS WEAPONS PROHIBITEDIt is a violation of district policy and state law for any person to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon on school premises, school-provided transportation, or areas of other facilities being used exclusively for school activities.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAMSParents are invited to call their school principal in order to participate on the school improvement team. School improvement teams, guide the work of improving learning at the school.

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENTThe Ritzville School District on occasion has a need to use chemical sprays in order to manage vegetation and insect pests. Chemical sprays are only one method in the District’s Integrated Pest Management program (IPM) to help control vegetation and insect pests. There is no fixed schedule for IPM treatments, which can range from monitoring to baiting and trapping to spraying. Chemical controls are used only when needed and in the least toxic formulation required.

The goal of IPM is to protect human health and reduce loss from pest damage, environmental pollution, human exposure to pesticides and the cost of pest control. Spraying is done when and where monitoring has indicated that vegetation or a pest will cause unacceptable economic, aesthetic or medical injury.

If the District deems it is necessary to use chemical sprays to manage vegetation and insect pests, the following guidelines are followed:• Whenever practical, treatments will be at times

when school is not in session.• When it is necessary to apply herbicides when

school is in session, the areas will be clearly marked and isolated from the school population. Pesticides used in the District must be pre-approved by the Maintenance Director.

• Records of applications will be on file at the Maintenance Department.

• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) information for approved materials can be obtained using the MSDS toll-free telephone number (800-451-8346).

• All persons who apply approved pesticides/• herbicides will be licensed.• Notification and posting of pesticide/herbicide

treatments will be made in accordance with the applicable state law (RCW 17.21.415).

Though spray applications are primarily conducted when school is not in session and the area is posted, some

might want prior notification of applications at their school. If you would like to be placed on a list to receive prior notification at your school, please contact Gale Gardner, Maintenance Director, at 659-1660. The list will be kept from September through August. To remain on the list, you will need to renew your request on an annual basis.

CHILDFIND NOTIFICATIONThe Ritzville School District provides many programs for the children of our schools at no cost to you. The schools offer special programs such as speech therapy, physical and occupational therapy, Title/LAP and special education academic programs, and preschool classes to children three years and older.

Developmental screenings and/or comprehensive assessments for children who are suspected of having a disability which could adversely their educational development are available at no cost to you. These services are available for persons between the ages of birth through 21 years of age. NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS UNDER THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) for Elementary and Secondary InstitutionsThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. They are:

1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the District receives a request for access.* Parents or eligible students should submit to the school principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the Ritzville School District to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the District decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the District will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the District as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the District has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility4. The right to file a complaint with the US Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. * State Law Qualification: Although FERPA allows 45 days to honor a request, the state policy records law requires an appropriate response to a “public records” request within five business days. RCW 42.17.320

GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONSWashington law defines a life-threatening condition as “a health condition that will put the child in danger of death during the school day, if a medication or treatment order and a nursing plan are not in place.” Children with life-threatening conditions such as severe bee sting or food allergies, severe asthma, unstable diabetes, severe seizures, etc., are required to have a medication or treatment order and nursing plan in place before they start school. The medication or treatment order must be from the child’s licensed health care provider.

If a medication or treatment order is not provided, the chief administrator of the school is required to exclude the child until such order has been provided. Our exclusion procedures are in accordance with the rules (WACs) of the State Board of Education.

It is vital to your child’s safety during the school day that if your child has a life-threatening health condition that may require medical services to be performed at school, you immediately notify your school’s principal or school nurse. The necessary forms will be provided and a time will be arranged for you to meet with your child’s school nurse.
