Trumpeter and composer Marquis Hill is widely recognized as one of the preeminent voices on the instrument of his generation. Raised in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade. However, after being inspired by a cousin his focus soon shifted to what was to become his primary instrument, the trumpet. At 12 years of age, Mr. Hill became a member of the South Shore Youth Jazz Ensemble under the direction of saxophonist and educator Ronald Carter. He has been an active participant in the programs

offered at Ravinia including the Ravinia Jazz Scholars and the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, the former of which brought him into contact with mentors Bobby Broom, Tito Carillo, and Willie Pickens. Mr. Hill’s musical education further expanded by attending Northern Illinois University, from which he graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. While still an undergraduate, Mr. Hill began to be regarded as one of the most in demand trumpeters in Chicago. Upon finalizing his formal education with a Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy from DePaul University, Marquis Hill began working more frequently both as a sideman and a leader of his own ensemble, the Blacktet, throughout the region; appearing at festivals, clubs, and theaters with increasing frequency. His musical prowess began to garner more recognition after winning such competitions as the International Trumpet Guild jazz competition (2012) and most recently the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition (2014), widely regarded as the most prestigious in its field. In addition to performance, Mr. Hill has been an active educator. He has held teaching positions at numerous institutions including the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin; The NIU Summer Jazz Camp; The University of Illinois at Chicago where he was a faculty member for two years. He currently resides in Chicago Illinois and has four albums to his credit: New Gospel (Skiptone 2011), Sounds of the City (Skiptone 2012), The Poet (Skiptone 2013), and Modern Flows vol. 1 (Skiptone 2014).

Music at Lincoln-Way North The curricular music program consists of three concert bands, two percussion ensembles, orchestra, four choirs, two levels of guitar, class piano, three levels of music technology, special education music and AP Music Theory. Marching Band, pep-band, jazz ensembles, madrigal instrumentalists and musical pit are all extra-curricular musical pursuits. Roughly 150 students are enrolled in LWN curricular bands and around 100 participate in extra curricular band ensembles annually. The tradition of music in the Lincoln-Way Community spans 60 years growing from a single high school. Lincoln-Way North opened its doors for the first time in fall of 2008, splitting from our sister school, Lincoln-Way East. The Frankfort Square community, where Lincoln-Way North draws its roughly 1700 student population from supports a strong tradition of music in the schools at every grade level. The Lincoln-Way District 210 Community Schools have long carried a tradition of excellence in instrument and choral music that continues to this day. North is a Nationally competing band program consistently being recognized for excellence in performance. The Marching Band at Lincoln-Way North is the 7 time Illinois State Class 4A Champions, a two time Bands of America Class 3A Regional Champion and six time BOA Regional Finalist. Individuals from the program are awarded outstanding recognitions frequently including outstanding soloist honors, US Army All-American Marching Band, BOA Honor Jazz Band of America, BOA Honor Orchestra of America, BOA Honor Band Rose Parade, National Youth Orchestra of the United States, and a Finalist in the Marine Band Concerto Competition. The percussion ensembles at Lincoln-Way North perform at two festivals every year and performed for the 2012 ILMEA Convention. The Pep-band was selected as the IHSA Class 1A & 2A Boy’s Basketball Official Pep-Band in March 2015. Lincoln-Way North will be closing at the end of the 2016 school year. All of our students will become Lincoln-Way East Griffins, where they will rejoin the fine traditions of excellence that were the roots of this program 8 years ago.

Lincoln-Way North High School Jazz Ensemble is an extra-curricular jazz group that rehearses two nights a week outside of the school day. All members are also members of LWN curricular band ensembles. Students in the ensemble are freshman through seniors, and come from very different social and economic backgrounds. The jazz program at Lincoln-Way North performs at 4 jazz festivals a year, community run-out gigs, and two Fish Fry fundraiser concerts (which draws an enormous crowd). Previous recognitions include: five time Jazz in the Meadows Division I recipient, Essentially Ellington Regional Performer, and consistent Division I recipient at Midwest jazz festivals. They have received 3rd place in class AA in Jazz in the Meadows 2012, Grand Champion at the Chicago Area Jazz Festival 2012-14, and Grand Champion at the ISU Jazz Festival 2015. Essentially Ellington has a large impact on how jazz is taught at LWN. We heavily push leaning the history of this American Music and it’s performers utilizing their resources. Students spend a large amount of rehearsal time listening to reference recordings and discussing. Improvisation is taught in a group setting and every student in jazz ensemble learns to read chord symbols, and improvise over different types of forms. Video, score notes and history lessons are discussed regularly. Recent guest artists included Art Davis, Tony Kidanokis, and Dr. Mark

O’Connor.
