It’s a beautiful time of year — wildflowers are blooming, the hills are green and the

weather is sunny, but not too warm — perfect for a bike ride.

How about gearing up for our de Lincoln? Tis year marks its 15th year. Te event

has four routes to fit beginners and professionals, although pro riders are not expected

to attend — yet. Courses range from 10 to 63 miles, with 1,400 feet elevation gain on

    the longest ride.

Not to be confused with our de France, our de Lincoln is not a race but a recreation-

al bike ride. It also raises funds for the Lincoln Volunteer Center.

Like a bike race, however, there will be refueling stations along the way. Tese will be

serviced by area Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs. Each rest stop will serve riders water,

energy drinks, fruit, snacks and available porta potties. Te ride will conclude with abarbecue lunch.

And the weather should be beautiful.

“It’s never rained on our ride. We’ve been very fortunate,” said Bob Romness, executive

director of the Volunteer Center. “Te ride goes rain or shine — we just keep thinking of

    shine.”

Hundreds are expected to ride this year and it is gaining prestige as the event recently

was on the list of top 10 spring rides by active.com.

“I just love when I see hundreds of people checking in and meeting up and ready to

have a fun day in cycling,” Romness said. “It’s s wonderful to have an event like this come

    to our community.” ❖

When it comes to small towns on the Northern Californiacoastline, it goes without saying that the quaint and rustic

village of Mendocino is a must-do on the bucket list of

any traveler who enjoys visiting scenic seaside towns in our re-

gion. Nestled deep along the famed Highway 1 route, Mendoci-

no’s scenery and architecture is as rich in beauty as it is history of

early day commerce and Hollywood presence.

With a population of less 900, the unincorporated communi-

ty of Mendocino is one of today’s most desired getaway destina-

tions. It’s New England-style buildings, and white picket fences

that are California’s closest thing to Cape Cod are a constructed

from the one commodity that is responsible for Mendocino com-

ing to life, that being the lumber industry in the mid 19th century.

With the lumber boom resulting from the Gold Rush and

San Francisco rapidly growing in the need of building materials,

the redwoods around Mendocino provided great prosperity for

those choosing to settle in and near the area. oday, that histo-

ry is still very evident in the well-maintained buildings that dot

the landscape in this designated National Historic Preservation

    District.

A trip to Mendocino will find visitors enjoying a variety of

opportunities from deep sea fishing, whale watching and abalone

diving to activities of the drier fashion such as hiking along the

trails of the ragged, seaside cliffs, enjoying the scenic wildflowersthat separate the trails from town and of course, shopping and

dining in the village where galleries and unique gift shops are

abundant as are book stores and fine eateries.

Main Street in Mendocino offers many great places to dine,

stay and shop for unique gifts, while still offering the convenience

of everyday items in a well-stocked market where every square

foot is packed with the freshest of foods and must-have items for

    those staying long term.

One of the most well-known lodging destinations is right on

Main Street, the Mendocino Hotel. Tis inn was built back in

1878 and still serves the same function today that is did over a

century ago. Its rooms are furnished with antiques, fireplaces anmemorabilia above a full restaurant and bar that is well populat

by both travelers and locals each evening.

Te list of movies filmed in the Mendocino Village is

lengthy one. Some of the most well-known flicks that filmed

location here were “East of Eden,” “Dying Young,” “Te Majes

and Pontiac Moon.” Not only did Mendocino provide a visual s

for many of these films, it too provided a great deal of privacy a

    relaxation for stars between shoots.

Just a few minutes down the road from town is the Poi

Cabrillo Lighthouse and Preserve. Following the 1906 San Fra

cisco earthquake, maritime commerce reached an all time high

the Mendocino coast and a lighthouse became critical. Te Po

Cabrillo Lighthouse illuminated the coastline for the first time

1909 and operated under the United States Lighthouse Servi

and the Coast Guard before it was acquired by the Californ

    State Coastal Conservancy in 1991.

Te lighthouse is surrounded by more than 200 acres of u

developed coastal bluffs. Te structure has been fully restor

and continues to light up the sky with its unique British bu

Fresnel lens. Te light keeper’s house and cottages on the la

are completely furnished with early 1900 period antiques a

available for stays or two nights or more. Te land surroundi

the light station is beautiful, with wide open bluffs bordered time weathered fences, wild flowers and wild life roaming t

area. During the annual Mendocino Whale Festival in July, Poi

Cabrillo offers events for the whole family and spectacular vie

    for whale watching.

A visit to Mendocino can be a day trip or a several night st

Te community boasts more than enough activities and sigh

to see that regardless of the length of your stay, you will never

starving for something to do nor will you be lacking choices f

    great seaside dining and shopping.

Thank you to all my clientsIt has been a pleasureto help you with allyour real estate needsfor the past 38 years.Thank you for trustingme and I look forwardto your future businessand referrals.  – Dennis C. May

    www.mayproperties.net

Beginning on Jan. 1, there is a new estate planning tool available toresidents in California. It’s called a “transfer on death,” or ODdeed. Te OD deed allows owners of certain residential real

property to name one or more beneficiaries to receive title to the prop-

erty upon death, thus avoiding the need to probate the estate. Tere aresome rules and it’s not appropriate in all situations, but a OD deed

is a simple and inexpensive estate planning document that are nowavailable to Californians.

Before the OD deed, the most common way to transfer realproperty in California upon death is by joint tenancy or through pro-bating the owner’s will in court, a lengthy legal and expensive process.

Californians often create revocable trusts to avoid the probate process, but trusts can often be too expensive for those whose estate consistsprimarily of the family home and little else.

Te primary reason I like the OD deed is the property passes tothe beneficiary(ies) at the fair market value (“stepped up basis”) upon

the death of the owner, which makes it a better alternative to addingchildren to deed during one’s lifetime or by gifting it to them andretaining the right to live in the home for life.

Some drawbacks of OD deeds include lack of contingency

planning if a beneficiary predeceases the property owner, and if abeneficiary becomes incapacitated, the OD gift may disqualify him/

her for SSI/Medi-Cal benefits based on theireconomic need. Also, if a beneficiary predeceasesthe home’s owner, a OD deed will not manage

the home on behalf of minor children, something

that a trust does very easily. It’s important to consider these scenariobefore using a OD deed.

OD deeds can also be very diffi cult to revoke if owner becomesincapacitated, and selling the house upon the death of the owner

may be delayed 120 days or more before title insurance can be issuedFinally, if there is more than $150,000 in assets beyond the value of thouse, the estate may still have to go through probate to transfer thos

    assets.

While a OD is clearly not for everyone, I do suggest it to singleparents or a person whose estate consists of a house and little else, wh

want to leave his or her residence outright to one or more persons, an whose circumstances do not necessitate the protection of a traditiona

trust. As always, do your homework and understand any estate plan-ning document before you sign the dotted line.❖

Roseville resident Kitt Lee has trained employees at the Craw-

fish Factory to welcome visitors as if they’ve never been to a

place quite like it before, because likely, in the Sacramento

region at least, they haven’t.Lee opened the restaurant at 1251 Baseline Road a year ago, in

January 2015, with business partner Sam Dahduli and a mind to

bring something new to the local seafood scene. Lee said he and

Dahduli saw potential in the local seafood market, where the only

quality options were high-end steak restaurants. Remembering

a concept he’d seen in Louisiana, exas and other regions of the

country, Lee wanted to bring a more casual, family-oriented option

to the table, serving fresh seafood by the pound at market price from

    a simple menu.

Under this model, customers pick a type of seafood — mussels,

shrimp, crawfish, clams, lobster tail or various sorts of crab — and

one of five flavors, including lemon pepper, garlic butter, Cajun

Louisiana style, the “factory signature” coconut curry or fusion Cajun,

a combination of the other four. Ten the customer orders it by the

pound, either mild, medium or hot, and in minutes the server returns

with a bag of steam-boiled shellfish seasoned accordingly.

Eating at the Crawfish Factory can be a messy experience, re-

quiring disposable bibs, napkins, wet wipes and a table cover; but th

food is fresh, generally shipped live from Louisiana, and the season

ings are unique to the restaurant.

“It’s a fast-growing theme you’ll find in a big city, like the Bay

Area, Southern California and Nevada areas; similar to Golden Cra

or Hot N Juicy Crawfish, Joe’s Crab Shack, that type of (restaurant)Lee said. “Here, everything was more of a California theme, where

we’d tweak it and make it a Cajun fusion style, rather than exactly

like Louisiana or (elsewhere). We created our own flavors, we create

our own recipes. Everything is made in-house — sauce, everything.

    A novel concept:

CHECKING ESTATE PLANSHow often should I review my estate plan?Often a big binder lands on my desk with a requestto review an old estate plan. Many people suspect

IT PAYS TO KNOW THE BASICSOF ESTATE PLANNINGFor many people, the words “estate planning” evokesemotions of fear and bewilderment. Once reservedfor the rich, estate planning is now somethingeveryone should be aware of and give some serious

SELECTING THE RIGHT TRUSTEE FOR YOUR TRUSTAND WHY IT MIGHT NOT BE YOUR KIDS!A trustee is a legal term used in estate planning.
