Welcome to Lincoln County

Welcome Letter

On behalf of the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to Lincoln County. Our county is a wonderful place to live. Located 29 miles northwest of Charlotte, NC, Lincoln County, a county of 78,000 citizens, offers many different types of places in which to live. Newcomers can choose from eastern Lincoln County, where Lake Norman is located; the City of Lincolnton, Lincoln County’s county seat; or western Lincoln County, one of our county’s most beautiful settings with rich farm land and rolling hills.

Our community is rich in cultural arts. We have an active Theatre Guild, Arts Council, Lincoln County Historical Association, Community Concerts Association, Choral Guild and a chapter of the North Carolina Symphony Association, which are all housed in the Lincoln Cultural Center, 403 East Main Street, Lincolnton. Whether it is the re-enactment of the battle of Ramsour’s Mill, a concert or play, you can enjoy all of them right here in our community.

Newcomers to the Lincoln County business community can also anticipate a friendly welcome because of our pro-growth attitude among Chamber, city and county government leaders.

Cooperative governmental bodies work with local business leaders to encourage industrial relocation and expansion. The conscientious growth and development of the area is fostered by partnerships between the public and private sectors.

The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce works to support the businesses and industries in our community, which broadens the area’s economic base through new jobs and added tax base. The Chamber’s Program of Work addresses the needs of both small business and industry by sponsoring seminars, networking luncheons and industrial relation’s programs on an annual basis.

Please accept our invitation to savor the simple pleasures of life in Lincoln County. We hope the Chamber’s quality of life magazine will assist you in making a decision to join us in a community that is “RICH IN HERITAGE, WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE.”

All roads lead to Lincoln County. At least that’s the way it seems when you talk to natives of North Carolina’s

Piedmont region. Somehow or another, it seems like everyone has a connection to this county that was formed in 1779.

Contrary to popular belief, Lincoln County wasn’t named for President Abraham Lincoln. Instead it was named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln. President George Washington elected Major Lincoln to accept the official sword of the British surrender at Yorktown. It is now one of North Carolina's oldest counties west of the Catawba River.

Six years after the county was formed, Lincolnton was established as its county seat. By 1840, Lincoln County was one of the populated counties in the state, leading North Carolina in wheat, orchard and dairy production. It was also one of the leading producers of cotton and livestock. The ironworks industry thrived here as well, as many of the Western Piedmont’s forges and furnaces were established here.

In 1813 Michael Schenck founded the first successful textile mill south of New England. Though a flood destroyed it three years later, Schenck, James Bivens and John Hoke built a larger plant and named it Lincoln Cotton Mills. It was fully operational until The Civil War.

Industry continued attracting people to Lincoln County, and by the 1840s, the North Carolina General Assembly decreased the size of the county, giving birth to Cleveland, Catawba and Gaston Counties. Regardless, Lincoln County continued to thrive and continues to attract industry through its convenient geographic location and quality of life.

Luckily plenty of early landmarks and historic sites remain throughout the county. So while Lincoln County is poised for a bright future, it still has a strong grasp and respect for its past. Here are just a few examples of what you’ll find.

● At Ingleside (circa 1817), you can see one of the state’s finest examples of antebellum Federal-style mansions. Designed by architect Benjamin Latrobe for Daniel Forney, who served in the United States Congress, this home is a feast for the eyes. ● Completed in 1923, the Lincoln County Courthouse offers an excellent study in Greek Revival architecture, as it marks the center of the county and remains Lincolnton’s most prominent landmark. ● Daniel Asbury, a Methodist circuit-riding preacher, started Rock Springs Campground in 1794. It is the earliest camp meeting organization in North Carolina. Seating 1,000 people on its pine pews, the campground moved to its present location in 1830. Campgoers still come out for annual early August meetings — no matter how hot it is.

● Vesuvius Furnace is the oldest residence in Lincoln County. It was built in 1792 by General Joseph Graham, who served the North Carolina regiment during the Revolutionary War. The home is also the birthplace of North Carolina Governor William A. Graham (1845-1849). ● The Battle of Ramsour’s Mill was a pivotal fight where 400 Militia Patriots defeated 1,400 Tories. One hundred men lost their lives. This battle was important because had it not been fought or if the Patriots had lost, the battle of Kings Mountain would have led to victory for the British Army. This farmland is currently being restored as a living history museum. ●

$50 minimum deposit required to open all accounts. Fifth Third Bank, Member FDIC.

When we set out to develop our new checking accounts, our first idea was to listen. Literally.

If that sounds like something you’re looking for from a bank, stop by 53.com/checking and use our simple new

tools to find the checking solution that’s just right.

It takes great thinking to come up with better ideas.

A little listening doesn’t hurt either.

We sat down with people — thousands of them — and asked, “What would an ideal checking account look like

to you?” They told us it should be simple and straightforward from the get-go, with no hidden fees or agendas.

These answers inspired five new checking accounts that better fit the needs of people just like you.

arts & culture

you’re never at a loss for things to do in Lincoln County, as the arts and culture scene thrives

throughout the year. Whether you prefer theatre, art exhibits, festivals or history, Lincoln County has got you covered.

Established in 1971, the Arts Council of Lincoln County is a non-profit organization that works to make art accessible to all residents of Lincoln County. Local artists are given exhibition opportunities through the Arts Council, and youth and adults can learn through art education programs provided by the organization. The Arts Council also partners with other local organizations such as Lincoln County Schools, Lincoln Cultural Center and Lincoln County Historical Association to produce community events.

Lincolnton on the third Saturday in September. While raising money for a number of local non-profit groups, the festival offers live entertainment, food, crafts and the perfect opportunity to reunite with old friends.

On the eastern side of the county, folks look forward to Denver Days, a four-day fall festival that attracts approximately 20,000 to 25,000 people each year. The festival began in 2003 when a group of Denver citizens decided to plan a community event. Little did they know it would grow into a festival filled with carnival rides, food, music, entertainment, craft vendors, business booths and more.

In early summer, Hog Happenin’ attracts motorcyclists and barbecue enthusiasts from all over. Last year there was even a Best Potato Salad contest. During the month of June you can also relive The Battle of Ramsour’s Mill, one of the most pivotal battles

of the Revolutionary War. During this celebration and reenactment you can enjoy tactical presentations, as well as living history demonstrations, music and dance performances, and food.

July 4th, Veteran’s Day and Christmas are all honored with festive parades. The July 4th celebration always features a showcase of fireworks, and the Christmas parade comes complete with carriage rides and a tree lighting.

The Arts Council also sponsors the Festival of Trees, where groups, organizations, businesses, churches and individuals decorate Christmas trees that are displayed at Carolinas Medical Center — Lincoln. A preview reception promises holiday fun for all. During the Christmas season, you can catch a performance of The Nutcracker at James W. Warren Citizens Center, while the North Carolina Symphony often performs at the James W. Warren Citizens Center.

You can always count on The Lincoln Theatre Guild to perform a holiday production. This past year Mr. Scrooge gave audiences a good chuckle. Founded in 1981, The Lincoln Theatre Guild has performed such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Dearly Departed, The Crucible and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Visual artists will also find Lincoln County to be a welcoming place, as there are art exhibitions throughout the year, as well as occasional art crawls in downtown Lincolnton. For the past seven years, many local artists have participated in the Denver Art Trail, an art exhibition held at various locations on the west side of Lake Norman.

Whatever your cultural interest, Lincoln County has something for you. ●

Located just 29 miles northwest of Charlotte, Lincoln County is Mecklenburg County’s

country cousin, full of homespun goodness and fresh-faced beauty. Offering everything from farmlands to traditional neighborhoods to lake living, Lincoln County is anything but ordinary.

Named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln (not Abraham Lincoln, as is sometimes assumed), Lincoln County is one of the oldest counties west of the Catawba River. Its history is rich with industries such as iron works, agriculture, textile mills and furniture manufacturing; and while these are still important to the area today, there are an ever-increasing number of corporations and industries coming to Lincoln County. The recent construction of the Lincoln County Industrial Park, for instance, brought 2,500 jobs to the

area; and according to Ken Kindley, president of the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, 10 countries are currently represented by the county’s corporations and industries.

Individuals and families are moving in as they discover the economic growth, beauty and affordability of Lincoln County to be just what they want. More land and house for the money means those seeking a little elbowroom can finally afford it. With Charlotte a short drive away, and lower-than-average taxes, small but high-scoring schools, and a country setting with friendly small-town attitudes, more and more people are calling Lincoln County home.

Options abound when it comes to the type of housing and lifestyle newcomers can choose. While much of the county offers rural settings with picturesque farmlands and peaceful rolling hills, it also boasts

lake living within its borders. Nestling up against Lake Norman, the largest manmade freshwater lake in North Carolina, the westernmost portion of the county has lakefront property with plenty of available housing.

Lincolnton, the county’s only municipality and the county seat, offers small city life, while Denver, an unincorporated community in the northwest corner of Lincoln County, is an up-and-comer with major retailers such as Walmart and Lowe’s moving in to serve its growing community.

The recent extension of four-lane highways through the county, says Kindley, speaks to the growth the area both expects and encourages. “The people of Lincoln County,” he says, “are a pro-growth community.” Residents petitioned for and welcomed the roads largely, says Kindley, because roads bring opportunities for

commercial and retail development. Under that scenario, business grows, and residents happily welcome new shopping and dining options — it’s a win-win situation.

With recreational options such as numerous park, picnic, sporting and golf facilities and two YMCAs, county residents have no lack of things to do in the area. Appealing community events such as seasonal festivals, fairs and live performances fill the calendar for lucky residents year round.

Residents say the benefits of living in Lincoln County abound. They enjoy the advantages of a slower pace of life with connections to the land and to the past, while making sure the economy and infrastructure move forward at a good pace — neither too fast, nor too slow. All of that adds up to more and more folks happily calling Lincoln County home. ●

educational options for parents looking for a different academic experience for their children. Operating as a charter school, Lincoln Charter School is located on three campuses (two in Denver and one in Lincolnton). The Denver campus offers instruction for grades K-5 at the

Highway 16 campus, while grades 6-12 have a separate campus on Galway Lane in Denver. The Lincolnton campus operates as a K-8 program.

Lincoln Charter School received its charter in 1997. A charter school is essentially a tuition-free public school, funded with public money and operated by parents, educators or community members. Charter schools also emphasize and recognize the importance of parental involvement.

According to the school’s website, the mission of Lincoln Charter School is “to facilitate the development of college ready individuals through emphasis on rigorous academics and our community expectations: honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, service and preparedness.” The school also has an active middle and high school sports program. Parents of prospective students must submit completed

application forms, and admission for the school is determined through a random lottery system.

dining

in Lincoln County, tried and true local dining options abound. Southern home cooking, family-owned Mexican

food restaurants and good old North Carolina barbecue joints maintain steady popularity. But as the county grows in numbers and importance in the North Carolina economy, residents crave an increasing number of local options and national chain restaurants to satisfy their appetites for variety.

There’s a large variety of dining options here, and Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce president, Ken Kindley says even more are coming in the future. Numerous existing Chamber and non-Chamber-member restaurants get an unequivocal thumbs up from residents.

When residents fancy a fresh, sweet taste of summer, The Peach Stand on Highway 16 near Denver is the place to go. True to its old fashioned farmer’s market roots, The Peach Stand sells fresh Carolina peaches and homemade peach ice cream and cobblers from June through August. Word has it that they sell out every morning and then return in the afternoon with more juicy goodness.

As for the future of dining in Lincoln County, Kindley says things look bright. “We’re always approached by people about opening new restaurants,” he says, and he and the rest of the Chamber are glad to answer the call. The Chamber works tirelessly to support these ventures, whether large or small.

“Small business is the backbone of Lincoln County,” Kindley says. “It’s the backbone of North Carolina and the country in general. At the same time, in Lincoln County, small businesses

are learning to coexist with national chains, both of which add variety for residents and visitors to the area.”

By remaining involved in representing the interests of business owners to lawmakers, keeping those business owners in the know about all that affects them and spreading the word to potential customers about what Lincoln County businesses have to offer, Kindley and the Chamber are on the side of progress

that benefits everyone in the county.Any way you slice it, the table is set

for Lincoln County dining to evolve into an even tastier blend of local fare and national chain options. And that’s a prospect that suits the area just fine. ●

if you drive west along Lake Norman’s southernmost shoreline passing McGuire Nuclear Station and Cowan’s Ford Dam, you

might likely feel like you are leaving industry and business behind. Entering Lincoln County on Highway 73, you’ll notice the road narrows and small family farms and independent retail and service companies replace the office high-rises, major strip malls and franchises that line the busier and more developed I-77 corridor. If you don’t look closely, you might be tricked into thinking that business in Lincoln County is a bit more rural.

But Highway 73, which crosses Highway 16 and continues as far as Lincolnton, serves as a gateway of sorts. It provides incomparable access to major east-west and north-south thoroughfares, links to rail service that reaches ports such as Wilmington and Charleston, and convenient access to international air travel that allows residents and businesses to reach virtually any point on the globe with ease.

The Lincoln County economic corridor is thriving. An established and growing network of more than 15 business and industrial parks forms the backbone of the county’s economy.

The Lincoln County Industrial Park, a 680-acre master-planned manufacturing and distribution park located approximately 18 miles south of I-40 and 15 miles north of I-85 is conveniently located along Hwy 321. Along with housing facilities for Crate & Barrel, RSI Home Products, General Electric, American Tire Distributors and Robb & Stucky, the park offers buildable acreage through a recent expansion.

Lincoln County is a place where things are still made. A diverse, highly skilled workforce anchors an industrial base strong in manufacturing and distribution. Celebrating 60 years of operations in Lincolnton and Lincoln County, Mohican Mills was recently awarded the Industry of the Year award by the Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA). Operating full shifts with more than 300 people, Mohican Mills supplies such customers as Hanes Brands, Alleson of Rochester and Nike. Sales and production are on an annual increasing trend.

Public and private sector business leaders work closely together to help new businesses establish homes in Lincoln County and succeed. The Chamber offers assistance in the six strategic areas of business and industrial relations, community development, East Lincoln relations, strategic planning and membership development, and public affairs and education. This assistance supports the Chamber’s mission of providing an association of community leadership whose purpose is to enhance the quality of life and foster a healthy economic environment in Lincolnton-Lincoln County. New business assistance is also available.

Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA), a private, non-profit corporation charged with facilitating industrial, office and commercial development in Lincolnton and Lincoln County supports business. Through a public-private partnership, the City of Lincolnton, Lincoln County, private citizens and the business community have come together to pursue well-balanced, quality growth for the community.

As the economy recovers and investors look for more efficient ways to operate, new business is again being drawn to the area. After many months of negotiations and strong competition from both Georgia and South Carolina, Chongqing RATO Power Company Ltd., a global manufacturer of small engines, and its subsidiary company Denver Global Products, Inc., have officially chosen Lincoln County as home. The county has also been chosen as the location of its North American manufacturing, product development, and engineering and testing facilities. Construction will begin in early 2013, and the company has plans to hire 450 employees over a four-year period.

So take a good look at the industrial infrastructure that exists in Lincoln County next time you head west and leave the lake behind. Lincoln County offers tremendous opportunities for commercial, retail and industrial development, relocation, and expansion. The future looks brighter than ever. ●

The faith community in Lincolnton is very present and engaged, as it offers many faith encounters. In many

communities, the religious diversity separates community members from one another, yet here in Lincolnton there is a community of cooperation — even in our diversity.

Here, the rich traditions of the past and the colorful flavors of the present and future are present. You can find the traditional, contemporary and blended worship experiences. You can participate in large church fellowships or tiny congregations. You can discover the high church experience with litanies to the casual experience with guitars and words projected on the wall. You can attend services with well-dressed congregations or casually dressed crowds. You can find the quiet and reflective churches, as well as the animated congregations who dance and shout before the Lord. All this diversity comes together through a simple unifying understanding — because we worship God, we are for our fellow human being.

Worshipping God in this community translates into service for this community’s well-being. With the strong faith community here, we see and experience a place where conversations in the marketplaces, on the streets, in the restaurants and businesses

around town are met with smiles. There’s conversation and encouragement about cooperating for the community.

You can find the many main line Christian denominations and varieties within the same denominational bodies: African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Baptist, Catholic, Disciples of Christ, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Wesleyan and more. Those not listed are a short drive away. Even in the local parades and festivals there is a strong presence of the faith community.

The community resources supported by the religious community are ecumenical in their concern for those in need. In cooperating efforts, we support this community as clergy and faith groups by supplying our hospital and its chaplain with volunteer chaplains; we support Christian Ministries, which operates the soup kitchen, and offers home meals and emergency help services to our struggling neighbors; we support the Hesed House of Hope, built and maintained by volunteers in the faith community for the homeless; and we support the Back Pack ministry which provides weekend food support for children in our schools whose family’s lack the necessary means to buy food on the weekends. There are more ministries than we can list here.

The presence of the faith community lifts those in need and continues to provide a solid community value system that teaches the foundations of respect for others, hard work invested in each other and a higher purpose for living for others instead of one’s self.

Lincolnton is a place of faith diversity and richness. What holds us together is the recognition that God’s love lifts us all including our neighbor, and we are His hands and feet. When I think of the impact of Lincolnton’s faith community on its citizens, I have the feeling of a warm blanket on a cold day or a glass of cool fresh lemonade on a hot one. I see the color in a photograph or video and taste the flavor in food. In short, I see the richness of Lincolnton’s faith community making the house a home and the residents, a community with life. The strength of Lincoln County is reflected by the strong presence of its faith community. ●

Ryan and Anne, they saw the move as an opportunity to discover a new community where they could make outdoor recreation and healthy living even more of a priority.

“I was pretty thorough when it came to looking at where to relocate our family and considered not only all the areas around the lake but also communities from Fort Mill [South Carolina] to Charlotte itself,” recalls Ken, a power trader who now works at Duke’s Uptown Charlotte headquarters. “I made our first trip to Lincoln County a month later, and as my son and I sat on a dock overlooking Lake Norman, we knew we had found what we were looking for, and we knew our boat had found a new home, too.”

The Davins settled in the popular Sailview community for its easy lake access, as well as close proximity to other local recreational opportunities around the county. They believe it is an ideal community in which to live.

“My wife and I bought our first boat in 1997, about two years after we were married, and boating has become a major part of our time together as a family,” he continues. “Before we moved to Lincoln County, we had to trailer at least 45 minutes just to get the boat in the water and now, with the choice of neighborhood docks, multiple marinas and boat slips all within 10 minutes, we have the opportunity to come

recreation and healthy living

in October 2011, shortly after the merger between Progress and Duke Energy was confirmed to both

company’s employees, Ken Davin opened a map of Charlotte for the first time and began thinking about finding a new home for his soon-to-be relocating family.

Ken and his wife, Carrie, both worked for the Raleigh energy giant and had been told their positions would likely be transferred. As much as they would miss the suburban Raleigh home where they were raising their active twin 10 year olds,

“We fell in love with all that Lincoln [County] has to offer," says Ken Davin.

home from work and school and go out to dinner or go fishing. We have been surprised to find that the lake really has more of an ocean feel with a seaside atmosphere like in Wilmington and Morehead City, where you can pull up to the dock, dine, fish and meet friends.”

The Davins are also discovering recreation beyond the lake. Optimist Club Park has become their home for youth sports, including football, baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball, and Sally’s YMCA, one of the Charlotte area's newest and most scenic YMCA facilities nestled in a pristine 150-acre piece of family farmland near their home, is another amenity they love.

“Our daughter, Anne, was also able to join the local chapter of Girls on the Run at her new school, and my wife has simply been amazed at how health conscious and aware everyone is all around here,” Ken says.

As the Davin family continues to explore their new surroundings, they will undoubtedly discover many of the other outdoor recreation gems across

Lincoln County. Westport and Verdict Ridge Golf Clubs join Cowan’s Ford, Glen Oaks and Lincoln Country Club as top golf destinations. Both the Betty G. Ross Recreation Trail, a wooded escape along the banks of the South Fork River, and the Marcia H. Cloninger Rail Trail offer nearby family walking opportunities, while county parks such as Beatty’s Ford, West Lincoln and East Lincoln invite guests with picnic shelters, disc golf, natural and paved trails, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, multipurpose fields, and amphitheaters.

“We fell in love with all that Lincoln [County] has to offer and are so happy that there is still so much more for us to discover,” Davin says. “We enjoy the fact that it’s not the busy side of the lake, and we cherish the quiet, small town outdoor feel with access to the city so close by. We now have a lot more opportunities to explore and create adventures as a family.” ●
