Slavery
• Was NOT an abolitionist• Didn’t want slavery extended into the
territories• Lincoln-Douglas Debates: Lincoln declared his
beliefs about slavery (gradual decline). Freeport Doctrine: Douglas believes popular sovereignty should determine if a free or slave state.

The Civil War
• Waited to be attacked at Fort Sumter• Goal: Reunite the Union (not end slavery)• Emancipation Proclamation: Proclaimed that
slaves in the Confederate States were free. Slave in boarder states (KY, MO, WV, DE, & MD) were still slaves.

The North
• Copperheads: Northerners who opposed the war.
• Writ of Habeas Corpus (right to be brought to court & informed of charges): Lincoln suspended this right to deal w/ dissent (opposition).
• Conscription(draft): Draft riot explode in the North.
• Re-elected in 1864 due to Union victories (Vicksburg & Gettysburg)

The South Surrenders• Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox
Courthouse in Apr. 1865• 5 days later Lincoln is assassinated by John

Radical Republicans will disagree over plans for the South
• 13th, 14th, & 15th amendments are passed
