Passé composé vs. l’imparfait
If you have a problem decided when to used passé composé or l’imparfait, keep in mind these questions
1. What happened? Was it once? What happened next? And then? (Use the passé composé.)
2. What were the conditions at the time? (Use l’imparfait.)
3. Was the action expressed by the verb a habitua action? Did it occurred more than once? (Use the imparfait.)

P.C. et l’imparfait
C’était le plein hiver, il pleuvait, la nuit tombait tôt. Quand je suis partie, Amie m’a embrassée. Je n’ai pas pris grand-chose, juste deux ou trois livres que j’aimais, ma pendulette, une brosse à dents, un peude linge. Je n’avais plus de jouets ni de poupées. Ça n’avait pas d’importance. Je partais pour ne jamais revenir. Il sont restés sue le seuil de la maison, pour me regarder partir.
1.What actions happened once? When was the passé composé used?
2. What were the conditions? When was l’imparfait used?

Pratiquez! Mettez les verbes au passé composé ou
l’imparfait

Plus-que-parfait
Used in French as the past perfect in English
When one action precedes another in the past, the verb describing the first action is the plus-que-parfait; the tense of the second veb will be passé composé or imparfait
Ex. Ma mère m’a dit un jour qu’elle avait reçu une lettre en français.
Je n’ai plus jamais parlé de Lassie. Elle était sortie de ma vie pour toujours.

Formation
Plus-que-parfait is made up of two parts: the auxiliary verb être or avoir + past participle of main verb
1. The auxiliary verb:the same 17 verbs conjugated with être and reflexive verbs
2. All other verbs are conjugated with avoir
3. When negating a sentence, only the auxiliary verb is negated.
