“There are many things wrong with the world today. I believe it is edu-cation, the right kind of education that will provide the solution, the rightkind of education that goes beyond classrooms and textbooks.

Those living in the West need to comprehend why the East is rising so rap-idly and how this is going to influence global trends in economics andother areas of our lives. They also have to comprehend that democracy isinterpreted and applied in ways that are culturally acceptable to people inother countries. That one size does not fit all and you cannot force a peo-ple to adopt an alien way of life, albeit it is democratic.

The East is a bewildering mixture of cultures, each is unique, each is dif-ferent and each is rich in traditions passed down centuries.

To those living in the East, the ways of the West are very important inunderstanding the intricacy of the politics that dictate economic trendsand indicate the shift of powers.

“The cultural differences may not be acceptable but they must be tolerat-ed for the sake of peaceful co-existence.

We must make the attempt to know more about other cultures, because ifwe don’t we will actually spend our working lives knowing only half thestory and seeing only half the picture. We need to interact so we can appre-ciate different viewpoints so we become tolerant of customs and traditionsthat are alien to our own beliefs.

Young people of today have the opportunity to decide whether historyshould repeat itself in such disastrous ways. It can be changed. I havetremendous faith in the young people of today. I am convinced that theywill be that force that will build a better, more peaceful world.”

At Limkokwing we believe educationis not a paper chase to get jobs. Education, inthe real sense of its meaning, is aboutigniting passion. It is about enabling ayoung person to unlock his or her potential. To have the confi- dence that heor she can contribute to theworld around and makeit more meaningful.Education is not a static thing. Look aroundand see what wonderful things learning has unlocked in peo-ple. The works of art that fill us with happiness. The monu-ments that astound us and stand testimony to the great featsof mankind. The devices that connect us with ease. The gadg-

ets that entertain and amuse us. The inventionsthat protect us and discoveries that give us long

life. Education is an energy, fluid and mobilebecause we are people, not robots.

Education can inspire. It can change mind-sets. It can build understanding. It cansoften hearts and evoke love. Education istruly education when we can work together, despite

our differences, and create something that makes some-one’s life better and safer.

Ancient cradle ofworld creativity and innovationAncient peoples from countries likeEgypt, Iran, India, Tibet and Chinawere among the world’s greatest innova-tors. They charted the movement of theheavens, developed the basic founda-tion for calendars and astronomy. Theyintroduced plastic surgery, inventedpaper and printing. They created glass, made the first compass, wrote the first

novel, built great monuments. It was their“how’s” and “why’s” about the world theylived in that led to the foundations of art, literature, music, astronomy, science andmedicine – to name a few. So ground-breaking were their discoveries andinnovations that many survive to thisday and are a part of our everyday life. These are countries rich in ancient cultureand traditions. Many of these countriesare emerging out of their long hibernationand reconnecting with the global economy, promising an exciting future of a new waveof creativity and innovation.

Emerging economic giant of the21st centuryThe next 15 years will see Asia re-shapingthe world economy. Competition fromChina, the third largest producer of manu-factured goods, is already restraining thepricing of manufactured goods world-wide. India, although lagging behindChina, is predicted to overtake China inthe coming years. It is today the fastestgrowing free-market economy in the world

forecast to become one of the world’stop five economies by 2025.

As countries like China, India and otherdeveloping countries actively participatein the global economy, hundreds ofmillions of working adults will becomepart of a more inter-related world labourmarket. Investment flows are changing asare world patterns of production, trade, employment and wages. The multina-tional companies from the most advancedcountries are already starting to adapt theirbusiness practices to accommodate thedemands of these fast rising economies.

The cradle of mankindAfrica is believed to be the continentwhere human life began. It holds secretsto how we evolved into this complexweb of cultures and communities spreadout all over the world. Africans were theworld’s first great innovators.

Millions of years ago they developed thetechnology of stone tools. Later they cre-ated the bow and arrow. It was in Africathat Man began to first domesticate

animals and started agriculture. Claypottery also had its origins in Africathousands of years ago.

Africa is an endless resource of creativecontent that originated thousands ofyears ago. It has a rich oral history cap-tured within its colourful folklore, poet-ry, music and songs. Recent excavationsreveal high levels of craftsmanship inpottery, iron work and jewellery. Indeedanyone interested in African creativitywill find an abundance of it in its weav-

ing, metallurgy, leatherwork, masonry, pottery, sculpture, furniture, architec-ture and weaponry.

Africa is today increasingly attracting theworld’s attention that goes beyondhumanitarian concerns. It has been pre-dicted that by 2010, Sub-Saharan Africawill become an important source of energyequal to the richness of the present-dayMiddle-East. The United States, Europe,China and India are among many other

countries that are competing to gainaccess to Africa’s rich sources of oil, natu-ral gas and minerals. There is keen inter-est to pour in investments, win contractsand build political influence in the conti-nent. Africa is changing as more govern-ments shift towards improved gover-nance and seek ways to expand theireconomies. Education is an area of keeninterests as Africa recognises the need toempower its next generation with newskills to manage the challenges of a fastevolving world.

Cradle of modern daycreativity and innovationThe Industrial Revolution of 1760 - 1830that began in Great Britain and thatcompletely transformed Europe as well asAmerica was a period of intense innova-tion. New inventions and discoveries inagriculture, transportation, textile and metalmanufacture influenced innovation ineconomic policies and also changed the

social structure of these countries. TheIndustrial Revolution, in effect, changedthe world.

The Industrial Revolution had a greatimpact on wealth creation opportuni-ties as it provided stability in incomegeneration.

The countries that comprise Europe havelong traditions in trade, transportation, manufacturing, finance and other eco-nomic activities. The formation of theEuropean Union consolidates the indi-vidual strengths of these countries and

it is this diversity that makes Europe anexciting prospect in the coming years. This is a union that brings together 455million people. It is a single entity find-ing its balance to rewrite how the worldengages in trade. There is a quiet revo-lution taking place in Europe where tra-ditional values in trade and commerceare being challenged. Some even referto it as an “emerging empire”. The fol-lowing facts reveal the reason why.

The European Union is today the world’sleading exporter and the biggest inter-national commercial market on earth. Itis the largest trader in goods and servicesin the world.

The EU Gross Domestic Product ofUSD10.5 trillion exceeded the UnitedStates’ USD10.4 trillion in 2003. TheEU currency – the EURO – is strongerthan the US Dollar. In many of the world’sleading industries, it is European transna-tional companies that dominate businessand trade.

EUROPE

Page 8: Limkokwing Prospectus

The EU is now intensely focused oninnovation, research and development, especially in frontier technologies tobuild its competitive edge. Many bench-marking projects and regional innova-tion programmes are going on aroundEurope.

Support mechanisms are providingemerging entrepreneurs the investmentand other means to bring new ideas tomarket. These include a comprehensive

range of services from financial, mar-keting, patenting, managerial and incu-bation, among many others.

Europe is becoming the new land ofopportunity. The digital technologyand biotechnology are already provid-ing the opportunities for Europe to takethe lead in creating another “revolu-tion” that will transform every aspect ofpeople’s lives.

“The Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has been a trailblazer forMalaysian education. From a small beginning, it has grown from strength tostrength to become what it is today: a truly internationally recognised Malaysianbrand name that has educated students from 100 countries. It is, therefore, notsurprising that Limkokwing University will become the first Malaysian institutionof higher learning to open a branch campus in London. I am excited at the mergingof the best and brightest from the East and West. It is my hope that such an exchangewill produce a burst of creativity and innovation that will illuminate our future. Ialso hope that this cross-pollination will give rise to greater understanding and empathybetween cultures and civilizations - qualities that are sorely needed in today’s world.”

It is the power of knowledge that has fueledMan’s progress. Our minds, from young, probe the world around us to know and tounderstand. And it is this insatiable appetitefor knowledge that keeps us advancing, moving forward and crossing into newfrontiers.

As a result the world has grown smaller andmore connected. And always it is the bestminds that make the leaps of imaginationthat pull others to see the world in a new light.

The human mind is an amazing tool. To beable to unlock its full potential is the challengethat we all face as we race each other to makeheadway in this new world.

And never before has the education ofpeople been as important as it has becometoday. Education has reached a high levelof sophistication in its organization, espe-cially in the more developed countries. These countries have set the examples thatmany of the other countries base theirown infrastructure for education.

They have set the benchmarks that the restof us try to match. But every country hasits own level of development and many ofthese economies are on the wrong side ofthe digital divide that has created hugeinequalities and huge issues.

This is a development that is unfortunate.Looking back in history, Asian countriesoriginally created learning environmentsfor mental, physical and spiritual develop-ment that date back centuries. India, Chinaand Japan all have had established learningcentres thousands of years before the Europeans. The Egyptians had a schooling system inplace between 3,000 and 500 BC.

Widespread colonization by the Europeanshas, in many instances, supplanted home-grown methodologies with imported styleand content that have influenced the struc-ture of education in many countries today.

Today completion of a degree in a Westernuniversity is desired and highly sought. Ina globalised world where multinationals rulea degree from a Western university is seento carry more weight. The outflow of fundsfrom Asian shores amounts to billions everyyear as hundreds of thousands of youngAsians compete to gain admission intothese universities.

Education is our key to successfully meetfuture challenges because education is aboutempowering the next generation. Education, over the next 10 years, will, most assuredly, undergo tremendous changes. Technologywill make sure of that. But to what extentis anybody’s guess.

Will we be able to put a chip in our bodiesthat will load up any information that weneed without having to study the books?

Imagine how this development will changeeverything. There may be no more exami-nations and no more homework. Schoolsmay change to allow young people to acquirethe soft skills they will need to interactwith others, perform their jobs with excel-lence, flesh out latent talents or learn to lead.

Keeping learning practicaland relevantAs a university of the 21st century, we arecompelled to look forward and attempt tovisualize what the future will look like. This enables us to gauge the new trends intechnology, new discoveries and newresearch that we need to dovetail into theuniversity’s curriculum, otherwise thelearning that we have now will becomeobsolete when students graduate. Theirskills and knowledge will be useless andthey will end up doing jobs that havenothing to do with their training.

It is important to avoid creating a mis-match between what students learn inschools and what careers demand of people

Tomorrow’s challengesshape today’s education

Constant innovation has keptlearning at Limkokwing relevantto industry changes and demands. Here is Melissa Brenda RethabileMsimanga from Botswana receiv-ing the Limkokwing ExcellenceAward from Professor EmeritusTan Sri Dato’ Dr Limkokwing.

“Everybody wants to be at thetop. But not everybody knowshow far it is the bottom. Whenyou get to pick your success pullup somebody with you andmake a difference in somebody’slife, Tan Sri, this is exactly whatyou have done for us. Educationis the best legacy a parent cangive to his children. You have leftthe best legacy in Africa.”

when they graduate and seek employment. The paper chase has grown very intense. The education sector offers the student abewildering number of courses they canstudy. But it is important that parents don’tjust look at obtaining the best degreeswithout checking out how else a collegeeducation can benefit their children.

Making education more than apaper chaseEducation must aim to produce capable, knowledgeable and skilled human capitalneeded to sustain the economic progressof a country. Curricula developed by“intellectuals” may emphasise learning for

learning’s sake without paying due atten-tion to a specific outcome. Too much focuson concepts and theories will distance thestudent from real world experiences.

In today’s climate of global competitionwe are very dependent on human capitalthat is business savvy, IT-skilled, able toarrive at well-informed and rapid decisionsin real time, and culture-sensitive in nego-tiations with people from other countries. As it is, rising cost of labour is forcingindustry to move from country to countryto take advantage of better tax incentivesand lower wages offered by emerging

economies. We can only make a differencevia better skilled and more knowledgeableworkers.

The K-economy depends on the high calibreof such human resources. And by high calibrewe cannot just define it through academicresults. We must include emotional intel-ligence, excellent work ethics and goodattitude. We must also include a high levelof creative thinking capability withoutwhich origination and innovation cannottake place.

It therefore makes perfect sense to involveindustry in the formulation of curriculafor schools, colleges and universities.

Industry a vital partner in shapingskilled & knowledgeable humanresourcesIndustry is a stakeholder, a very importantplayer, in the shaping of human capital. And they invest a lot in building talentand inculcating leadership in those theyemploy. And quite often they re-train peo-ple to make them fit for employment intheir organizations.

Industry stays close to changes in the glob-al market. It is a matter of survival thatthey keep tabs on global development. Therefore industry will be able to provide

Limkokwing Kuala Lumpur

valuable feedback to curriculum creatorsso they can enhance what the next gener-ation is learning today.

Cross-cultural experiencesimportant for the new graduateThe Limkokwing Global Classroom pro-gramme is a bold new initiative that seeksto build deep cultural appreciation in thenext global generation. We want to pro-duce global graduates who are at ease withany culture, who understand the spiritualbackground and sacred traditions, who areable to circumvent and navigate throughdifficult situations because of this under-standing.

We provide all our students this opportu-nity to expand their classroom learningwith a global experience that will standthem in good stead when they begin theircareers.

A global campus for aglobalised worldAt Limkokwing students from all over theworld pursue international qualificationsin programmes that are constantly re-designed to keep pace with a world that isevolving in exciting ways. The presence ofdifferent cultures is a unique part of ouridentity and in fact, an important part of

who we are. We encourage this intermin-gling because careers today demandhuman capital that is culture-sensitive andable to communicate with the world withease.

Business dealings are now in real time andspeed of response determines business suc-cess. How fast deals are closed will dependvery much on the calibre of thoseemployed in these negotiations. The samegoes to those working in government orwithin non-government organizations.Globalisation is a reality that studentsmust take into account when decidingtheir choice of not just careers but also the

campus that can provide them with thebest exposure to excel in such a competi-tive field.

Limkokwing: Moulding the nextgeneration of movers and shakersinglobal content creationWithin Asia the Limkokwing University ofCreative Technology has provided the mainthrust in anchoring creativity as a vitalprerequisite needed to excel in any pur-suit. It made its blazing debut in 1992 settingnew trends and transforming the conductof private education in Malaysia. Neverbefore was there a concerted effort to provide

education that would build capability oflocal talent in creative technology. Theeffort was pioneering and ProfessorEmeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Limkokwing, the Founder and President ofLimkokwing University started fromscratch to build market confidence increative careers. Malaysians and others inthe region now find it easy to embrace cre-ativity and accept it as more than just artand design.

Focused on creativityFrom inception creative technology hasbeen Limkokwing’s focus. In the early 90s

this was an alien concept. The Internetdidn’t arrive in Malaysia till late 1994 andthe “web years” had not yet begun toinfluence the world. It was nevertheless,an age of computers and of local net-works linking industry to industry.Limkokwing provided not just the skillsbut the creativity that empowered theindividual to move rapidly forward inhis/her career.

The college’s focus on creative technology

in 1992 was uncannily timely becausethe need for content creation explodedwhen technology advancement trans-formed business-to-business transactions.Limkokwing’s techno-savvy and creativegraduates were immediately absorbedinto businesses that were trying to copewith the changes. For school leavers thecollege’s curriculum and global universi-ty network made it the perfect choice toobtain qualifications to gain entry intoexciting careers such as web design, ani-mation and product design amongstother creative careers.

The History“Limkokwing is such a super-rocking school and the bestamongst other institutions that Ihave heard of. The students wereextremely excited about thearrival of the President. They allwanted to feel their hands in hisand exchange a few words. ThePresident mentioned that hewants us to excel in our studiesand he would really love to see usbeing the best institution inBotswana. But not only inBotswana but also the whole ofAfrica.

“What I would die to share withsomeone who is not aLimkokwing student is that, here we are getting an educationof great quality and everything isgreat! Heish! Man join us inLimkokwing and get the greattaste. It’s such a loving school.”

Changing Malaysian educationLimkokwing dramatically changed theeducation sector, compelling it to re-evaluate marketing strategies to respond

to an audience that had grown moresophisticated. In 1997 the college beganto export its services. Today it has morethan 10,000 students from over 100countries pursuing international degreesand diplomas. In 2003 the university col-lege was recognised by the MalaysianMinistry of International Trade andIndustry for excellence in export servic-es and by the Ministry of Education forbeing the most international privateuniversity college in the country.

In 2003 within a span of just 12 years thecollege became the first private university

college in the country bestowing its owndegrees. In 2004 it moved into its ownpremises in Cyberjaya, a landmark campuswith its innovatively outstanding design.

In 2007 it became a full fledged university.

The revolutionary concept of “industrywithin university” to boost brand devel-opment activities of the university wasmade possible through the incorporationof the Malaysian Design & InnovationCentre. Incubation of new lifestylebrands, operated like business outlets werecarried out on campus – a trendy cafe, afashion outlet, a hair design lab, an al-frescoeatery and a convenience outlet are someof them. Here students are encouraged tocreate the identity, develop the interiorand market the products.

“For us in Malaysia, we feel a need to share whatever we have with the restof the world. That is why we welcome foreign students to our country. We havebeen able to develop and help in passing on whatever creative knowledge wehave in Malaysia. I think Tan Sri Dato’ Limkokwing and his institute havedone sterling work in this area.”

Working with industryThrough MDI the university has a directrole in nurturing innovation throughR&D activities in brand packaging tohelp SMEs. The creation of the NationalAward For Creativity & Innovation recog-nised pioneering branding efforts of morethan 50 companies in Malaysia. Theuniversity has initiated several mergersrelated to joint efforts with British andItalian companies to upgrade knowl-edge and skills in the future.

The Limkokwing University providesTan Sri Lim with the best training groundto produce the kind of human capital he

believes is best to power commercialenterprises. These are highly skilled, highly creative individuals who bringfresh perspectives that enterprises needto meet global challenges.

The university is unlike other institu-tions. Here students are expected tothink outside the box. Limkokwingstudents are noted for their achieve-ments and their skills; for their positiveattitude and sunny personality. Theyhave an edge over their peers with theircreativity and versatility. And they areencouraged to be competitive – to putthe knowledge and skills they have

“The establishment of a Malaysian institution of higher learning, in the heart ofLondon, is an outstanding accomplishment that testifies to the rising standards ofMalaysian education.

I applaud this achievement by the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. This certainly raises the benchmark of Malaysian education to a higher level, onethat is able to compete with the best of the world.

I fully subscribe to the University’s philosophy of merging the best of East and Westin the belief that it will help to create a new generation of global graduates, skilled, knowledgeable and culture-sensitive, that will work towards the creation of a morepeaceful and safer world than what we have today.”

“Professor Limkokwing is the alltime philosopher. I think Ishould emphasis the fact that hisspeech made an impact on me. Ifelt motivated and a part of theLimkokwing family. He hasgood words and knows how togive a speech to young andvibrant people like us, brief andstraight to the point with a lot ofnew things to grasp and learnfrom him.

From his speech I have learnedthat we Africans are creative, but tend to think that creative

people are born and not bred. This has made me believe inmyself. In order not to forgetwhat he said, I have put a pic-ture of Professor Limkokwing onmy bedroom wall as some kindof morning motivator.”

gained to test at competitions, exhibitionsand other events. The most promisingstudents are absorbed into the manydepartments that now provide consul-tancy for brand development to boththe private sector companies as well asgovernment agencies.

The learning process at Limkokwinginvolves students in major activities andcampaigns that the consultancy works on.Many of these activities are focused onglobal issues. The Kuala Lumpur WorldPeace Conference held at Mandarin

Oriental in August 2003, is a fine examplewhen students helped in the organizationof the event. It is Tan Sri Lim’s belief thatgiven the opportunity people will shine.

The most recent development has been theuniversity’s expansion into 76 cities in 70countries as part of its globalization strate-gy to create the next generation of the glob-al content creators. In the pipeline is thesetting up of Limkokwing campuses in keycities across the world, to add to campusesset up in London, Beijing, Jakarta, PhnomPenh, Borneo and Botswana.

“I see the vision of Limkokwing University as a stepping stone towards our nation’s

Vision 2016. According to my view, it is going to wipe a lot of peoples’ tears, job-

wise. With this vision I see myself owning my own company five years from now.

Studying at Limkokwing is so fascinating and different from so many universities

I have heard of. Much of the curriculum is based on practical work which is a tool

so many university graduates lack in order to go into industry.”

A global vision

“Education truly fulfils its role if it can help a young person unlock his or her poten-tial and build a meaningful life with those skills.

Education is not confined in a classroom. It is about the world around us. It isabout who we are to other people. What we can do for them. How we can make adifference to the environment we work in.

Education is a very powerful tool because it builds a nation’s hope for the future.”

“This institution will never know how many peoples’ self-esteem and self-confidenceit has redeemed because the numbers are endless, myself included.

Who would have thought that this would be a vision of just one man. Tan Sri DrLimkokwing. He is more than a revolutionary to me; a motivator, a man whobelieves everybody deserves a chance to prove themselves in life, a man with a self-less vision that will mark the change in attitude that we have always dreamed ofin Botswana. The list is endless. He is a great man.”

“Coming from London I’velearnt so much by being on thiscampus. It’s not a normal univer-sity by anybody’s standards. Theidea of traveling while you studyis excellent, and Limkokwing isestablishing itself in so manycountries the possibilities are end-less. You wouldn’t get somethinglike that in England. Everyone here is excellent atsomething; it pushes you to trymuch harder. The music acade-my has a record label, the hairsalon is trained by L‘Oreal, thedesign students do projects forNestle. There are film crewsshooting movies on campus,MTV hands out free concertpasses, we design clothes for EricWay and Mel Gibson visit thecampus! Limkokwing is crazy!”

Shaping human hearts andminds to power globaltransformationTo excel in today’s fast moving world takesa special kind of skill to rise above the rest.It requires left brain, right brain thinkingthat is able to concentrate, conceptualiseand connect. The skill is about synthesizinginformation and arriving at innovation.

At Limkokwing we open minds to “connectthe dots” and see the big picture and makenew sense of life. We create the campusenvironment where students are:

Exposed to exciting campus events thatbuild social skills.

Challenged by industry projects thatopen their eyes to the complexities ofthe real world.

Stimulated with personal freedom toexplore and experiment that build confi-dence and shape opinions.

Engaged in incubation of new enter-prises that merge different skills to createnew brands.

Involved in community work that adds valueand meaning to their lives.

Empowering tomorrow’s moversand shakers of the worldLimkokwing is on a global quest, workingwith governments to expand their economiesby creating a new generation of entre-preneurs. The digital divide has to bebridged to enable, empower and enrichcommunities deprived of the opportu-nities to partake of wealth-generatingdevelopment. Technology is opening upnew dimensions that can result inincredible benefits to Mankind. But aworld in conflict, divided by differencesis incapable of building on these benefits.

Limkokwing is convinced that educationhas the power to level the playing field. Butit is for nations to invest in the infrastruc-ture that will build the kind of humancapital that can move the world to newlevels of co-existence.

A global mission“It is with great pleasure and deep gratitude that I write to thank you. Youruntiring efforts on our behalf have touched the hearts of us all and you haveshown true friendship and solidarity with the people of South Africa in ourendeavour to transform South Africa into a free, just and democratic country.”

“My experience at Limkokwinghas been quite rewarding andeducational. Every aspect andconcept portrayed by theUniversity is further supportedby allowing us to put the theory-based concepts we learn intopractical application. I find theuniversity to be fully industryorientated, and that’s somethingwe need in order to prepare us forthe world out there. Furthermorethe environment is nurturingand promotes a friendly atmos-phere that is motivational. Oneextremely invigorating train ofthought is the idea that studentsfrom such diversified origins canbe so friendly and cooperativewith each other.”Jihad Abou Ghosh, Palestine

Economic shifts created byglobalization and technologicaladvancement have shrunk theworld into a villageThe world is growing increasingly inter-connected. The flow of information, tech-nology, capital, goods, services and peoplehas made globalization a megatrend thatinfluences everything from the way busi-ness is negotiated, capital is moved, enter-tainment is created to how education isplanned and learning is conducted.

The world is moving faster now and changesare happening almost overnight. Anythingthat can be digitized and transmitted isbeing outsourced to countries like India,China and Malaysia. Today everything fromX-Rays, income tax to cartoons and com-puter games are being outsourced to othercountries where skilled people are helpingmajor global companies cut costs andimprove productivity. It is estimated thatover the next 10 years about 4 millionAmerican jobs will be outsourced to India.

This is a world dominated by the figures 24,7 and 365. It refers to a connectivitywhere business anywhere is able to source

talent at any time, any where, to performtasks in record time. For example a businessexecutive in the US can commission someonein India to work out a business powerpointpresentation in time for an early morningmeeting. The American executive emails thedetails the night before and while he or sheis asleep the Indian executive on the otherside of the globe is working out the presenta-tion and by the time the American executivereturns to work the next morning, the power-point is already emailed over, all profession-ally done with charts and everything.

The world of business has, therefore, becometremendously challenging. Today new busi-ness models are being created by younger,techno-savvy entrepreneurs who are cuttinginto the market share of old establishedinstitutions.

The challenges that businesses are facingnow are to speed up responses, slim downoperations and innovate continuously.Increasingly they are seeking to employtalent that will offer them the best value interms of software skills, linguistic abilities, creative problem-solvers and culture-sen-sitive enough to negotiate with any onearound the world.

The world is flat

There are many compelling reasons tochoose Limkokwing as your campus forthe pursuit of higher education. This isa learning hub that serves the purposeof all kinds and all calibres of students.

Global PerspectivesThe world is flat, leveled by technologicaladvancements and social shifts in globaleconomics. The dotcom boom and the risein outsourcing, offshoring and many otherworld converging trends have flattened

the world. In other words you can expectto have clients or an employer who livesmiles away in another part of the worldbut your web-enabled working stylewould make it all seem as if they werejust next door. Time, distance, geogra-

phy and even language make little dif-ference. As young people preparing forcareers this is the mindset to adopt andmake the right choices to stay relevantand in demand.

Global KnowledgeIn a globalised world those able to inter-act and negotiate with ease with peoplefrom other countries will enjoy bettercareer prospects. They can also look for-ward to global postings in countries where

they have better knowledge and under-standing of their cultures. A Limkokwingstudent has the opportunity to be thatperson. The Limkokwing Universityprovides a breakthrough learning expe-rience that builds global knowledge of stu-

The next 15 years will see Asia re-shapingthe world economy. Competition fromChina, the third largest producer of manu-factured goods, is already restraining thepricing of manufactured goods world-wide. India, although lagging behindChina, is predicted to overtake China inthe coming years. It is today the fastestgrowing free-market economy in theworld, forecast to become one of the world’stop five economies by 2025.

As countries like China, India and otherdeveloping countries actively participatein the global economy, hundreds of millionsof working adults will become part of amore inter-related world labour market.Investment flows are changing as are worldpatterns of production, trade, employmentand wages.

The multinational companies from themost advanced countries are already start-ing to adapt their business practices toaccommodate the demands of these fast

rising economies.

Students, especially those from Europeand other Western nations must acquirecultural knowledge of Asian countries. Governments of developing countriessend their best and brightest young cit-izens to Malaysia for further studies.Malaysia offers a more conducive envi-ronment because the cultural diversity, political stability and warm tropical cli-mate make it easy for students to settlein and focus on their studies.

Nurturing the winning mindset, pushing the limitsTo nurture talent is to sharpen the mindand hone the skills. The steps studentstake to participate in competitions standthem in good stead when they graduateand transit into careers. The qualities arepart of the emotional intelligence neededto do well in life. The lessons learnt serveto mould champions. These are the kindof students who will succeed because thebest lessons learnt are often those that takeplace outside the classroom. At Limkokwingwe push it further, beyond the ordinary. That is how we create champions.

Creating the culture for winningCreativity has a lot to do with winning. We have developed it into a science. It hasto do with psychology and with the will-ingness of the student to try new ways ofdoing things. What we do is hardest at thestarting point when the student joins us asa novice, the mind bogged down withknowledge and with no outlet for the useof this knowledge.

We fire the imagination. We mould thethinking. We push hard to move the mindto attempt to fly. And when the studentsstart to fly then we let go. We have doneour part. We have achieved what we hadset out to do. The students take over. Wethen merely facilitate to provide the toolsand the environment. We take pleasure inseeing creativity take hold.

Igniting the passion for excellenceOnce ignited there is no turning back. Wehave found that students who have dis-

covered the value of excellence make itpart of their lifestyle. It takes hard work,no doubt, painstaking attention to details, but in the end it is worthwhile to go theextra mile and give the project in hand thepolish it needs to look good. That sense ofsatisfaction is what makes the passion forexcellence so addictive.

Being fully prepared for competitionIt is no different from studying for anexam. You have to know the rules and youhave to abide by it. But those who excel

are those who give their submissions morethan what is asked for. They are in it towin. Every point must be covered. Thispreparedness is a great lesson, somethingyou acquire for life.

Building the power to winStudy the ways of the world’s most suc-cessful athletes. You will learn that disci-pline, a burning desire to win and confi-dence, added to constant and consistenteffort will put anyone in the top bracket ofwinners. The power to win often has to dowith a competitive spirit and a strong willpower to go the distance.

Developing a sense of leadershipThere has never been a winner who hasnever shown leadership. It is a naturalconclusion. All the characteristics of lead-ers are present in winners. Leaders arefocused on the outcome and relentlessabout the details. They are exuberant andenergetic. They inspire others and makegreat team players.

Creating Champions

It is traditional for most universities todocument their research findings. Youwill find hundreds of these printed mat-ter stacked away in resource centres orlibraries for others to gain from the find-ings. But at Limkokwing we do this a lit-tle differently. The research is captured invideos or publications or presented in gal-leries, mounted as exhibits to inform andto educate visitors to the university. Here

research is converted into informationthat is useful to people.

Knowledge Research CentreThe Knowledge Research Centre is where

faculty conducts its research. Lecturerskeep tabs with new trends within theirindividual disciplines and use the infor-mation actively in ongoing projects. Theinformation often results in an overhaulof curricula to maintain the relevancy ofour programmes with what is going on inthe marketplace.

Research to upgrade curriculumWe have created specializations within thebroader studies where students with a pen-chant for a particular subject can focus onbuilding a career within that niche. Examples

Research to visualise governmentpoliciesBefore the government introduces a policythey would have conducted their ownresearch over a period of time. But oftenthese are very technical and confidential.

What the university has done is to con-duct a different kind of research where wecan translate the information to enablepeople to understand the issues at stakeand why the policies were introduced.

The university has been very active in cre-ating the means for the country to:• build racial harmony• create an exciting identity to motivate

sportsmen and sportswomen• stimulate rural entrepreneurs to upgrade

As a creative university we abhor the talentthat is going to waste. We want to energiseyoung minds and set them on a path ofexciting discoveries. We want them tocontribute to build their communities andthereby build their nations. We want toignite their passion for innovation. We wantto see new ideas coming from people of suchrich heritage such as the Cambodians.
