Just ask!

Here are a few modifications that can make seatingan asset to your limited mobility consumers:

-ARMS. Arms on chairs are a necessity for those with limited mobility as they pro-vide extra support for transitioning from sitting to standing and vice versa.

-SEAT HEIGHT. Seniors and others with limited mobility often suffer from reducedmuscle tone. In these cases, seat height must be higher to enable the extension of theknee from the sitting to standing position. Seat Height should range from 20” to 22”.

-SEAT DEPTH. A shorter seat depth also aids in the transition from sitting to stand-ing. Seat depth should range from 20” to 22”.

-CUSHION FIRMNESS. All seating pieces intended for use by individuals with lim-ited mobility should have a cushion since the person tends to stay seated for extend-ed periods of time. A cushion should not be so soft that it creates an obstacle forstanding but should not be so hard that it is uncomfortable for extended use.

A heavy-duty recliner has four major enhancements that set it apart fromretail counterparts:

-FIRST, the recliner mechanism itself, which is most susceptible to damage, ismade of heavy-gauge steel. Reclinermechanisms are extremely prone tobending or warping due to repeated

abuse. Contract recliner mechanisms are required to pass rigorous tests , including thousands of trial openingsand closings, to validate the mechanism’s ability to stand up to heavy use.

-SECONDLY, the wood frame underneath the upholstery and foam is constructed of thick, strong woodspecies. The most reliable frames are covered in catalyzed lacquer to ensure that moisture and fluids do notcause frame warping and damage.

-CONTRACT RECLINERS also offer higher density foam filling in the seat cushion which not only increas-es the longevity of the recliner but also aids patients and consumers with limited mobility to get from sit tostand. The higher density foam offers more stability since the patient does not sink as far into the cushion itself.

-UPHOLSTERY CHOICES like fluid-proof and fluid-resistant fabrics make buying a Contract grade reclin-er a far better value than a less expensive retail recliner that will not offer the durability of a Contract gradeheavy-duty recliner.

Bariatric Seating:Bariatric furniture includes a wide variety of wood, metal and upholstered seating pieces thatare designed and tested to hold up to heavier weights then standard furniture pieces.

-WIDER SEATS for more comfort. In general a bariatric seating piecehas a seat width of at least 30 inches and sometimes even up to a spacious 40 inches.

-EXTRA HEAVY DUTY construction. Extra Heavy-Duty constructionmeans higher durability and greater peace of mind for individualsrequiring extra support.

-WIDER BASE AND STRONGER FRAMES. This assure users that they can fit without fear of cracking framesor chair breakage.

Limited Mobility, Incontinence Seating

-POP-OUT SEATS are by far the most innovative solution for fluid issues. With this design, the entire seat of an upholstered sofa, loveseat or chair“pops” out leaving just an open frame to allow easy mopping and cleaning offluids. Urine, or any fluid, flows through to the floor and eliminates pooling onupholstery or into wood frames.

-SELF-DECKING is a technique that uses a length of fluid-proof fabricunder upholstered sofa, loveseat or chair cushions that “catches” fluids to pre-vent them from hitting the floor or soaking into foam and furniture frames. This is typically an inexpensive way to significantly reduce damage caused byurine and fluids.

-VINYL FABRICS are a fluid-proof upholstery option that is low cost andhighly durable. The best news is that vinyl is no longer the sticky, hot plastic-like fabric it was mid-century. Soft and stylish options make it a stand-outchoice for incontinence or any furniture in areas that might take a few spills.

-Many FABRIC TREATMENTS are now readily available on an endlessvariety of upholstery fabrics. Some treatments, like Crypton, penetrate theentire weave of the fabric, making the entire knit fluid-resistant. This penetra-tion of the treatment makes it far superior to surface treatments that mightwear off after repeated cleaning of soiled areas.

-As an added safe-guard for any upholstery option, FLUID-PROOF LINERS can be added to almost any contract upholstered furniture. These lin-ers add extra protection for foam that can still be vulnerable to urine and flu-ids that seep in through fabric, zippers, welting and seams.

Consider these FIVE little-known facts that might make life easier foranyone dealing with incontinence:
