Meet the JASSA collectionInspired by Indonesian and South East Asian design traditions, JASSA’s handmade products are all created out of natural raw materials. They’re about kicking back and having fun. Spontaneity, togetherness and a little bending of the rules.

The JASSA collection encourages people to come together, and that’s how it’s been from the very start. It was conceived by five creative minds, developing and sharing their ideas around a common theme.

The team included Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek and IKEA in-house designers Nike Karlsson, Iina Vuorivirta and Paulin Machado, guided and coordinated by Karin Gustavsson. Each designer has put his or her own stamp on the collection, but its parts come together to generate a sense of free-spirited fun.

As a Creative Leader, Karin’s goal is to create a more relaxed, functional and beautiful world. “JASSA is about taking familiar things like hand-woven natural fibre objects and batik textiles and transforming them into something new and exciting,” she says.

For people who don’t want to go all in with the Bohemian look, JASSA offers lots of options. Karin explains, “The earthy handmade furniture can be combined with cooler, simpler black and white fabrics. Or you can scatter a few brightly coloured JASSA cushions on an existing sofa. Creative people might want to make something of their own with the pre-cut fabrics. In the true spirit of JASSA, we say ‘anything goes’!”

Bring together a team of international designers with different backgrounds and specialties, give them a common theme and what do you get? JASSA!

“When we started making prototypes of the furniture pieces, testing their construction, considering their appearance and discussing the strength of the ideas, everyone got involved,” says Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek. “The whole process was very playful. We worked together on the factory floor, learning how to handle the unfamiliar raw materials. There was an atmosphere of open experimentation.”

The designers’ playfulness is evident in the end result: a lighthearted collection of colourful textiles, curvy rattan furniture and cool accessories. Stylistically, JASSA is held together by its handcrafted natural materials and vibrantly patterned prints, which infuse the whole collection with summer’s heat.

Look closely at the JASSA collection and you’ll see that every single piece is different. One rattan sofa might be slightly more curved than another; its texture slightly smoother or coarser. You might spot a slight asymmetry. Barely noticeable. You have to look carefully, but it’s there.

“That’s the beauty of a handmade collection like this,” says Finnish designer Iina Vuorivirta. “The production process is not mechanised, so you get a bit of variation in the end products.”

All the natural fibre parts of the JASSA collection – including the furniture, baskets, sea-grass mats, and bamboo lampshades – are 100% handmade. Many hours of work went into bending and weaving the materials, understanding how to create joins with virtually no nails or glue.

Like the chilli in the sauce, JASSA fabrics add an intense flavour to this collection. Where did all these hot ideas come from?

Textile designer Paulin Machado was inspired by the Indonesian way of mixing colours and patterns. “The way the JASSA patterns are built up visually, is very much like batik or ikat. There are lots of competing colours: pinks and yellows and blues and greens. To begin with, you wonder how they can possibly work together!” she laughs, “but in the end they just do!”

Every piece in the JASSA collection is made with rattan, bamboo, water hyacinths, sea-grass and cotton. Organic materials that feel good to the touch. According to designer Nike Karlsson, they feel good to work with too.

To create this collection, the JASSA designers immersed themselves in the world of traditional Vietnamese and Indonesian handicrafts. Modern mechanised processes were cast aside in favour of a softer way of working.

Nike explains, “With a material like rattan, you have to think in terms of bending and binding rather than cutting and nailing.”
