The Festival is well and truly underway and the

anticipation is running high for the Annual Cultural

Parade on August Monday. The Calypso Competition, VG

entertainer Elvis White and many other performers have

already left the crowds wanting more. And these per-

formances promise to be just the beginning of greater

live entertainment by renowned artists such as Maxi

Priest and Ziggy Ranking.

Tonight (Thursday), you are in for a treat with a new

competition to be held at Festiville, the “BVI Can Dance

Competition”. Based on hit US show So You Think You

Can Dance – this is definitely one not to be missed as

there is no shortage of talented

dancers in the BVI! Tomorrow night

(Friday) is also a top night as it is

not only the Local Food Fair but

also International Reggae Night

with Maxi Priest headlining the

show.

On Saturday, the Festival real-

ly gets into high gear with the

BMSA Soap Box Competition at

HLSCC and International Soca

Night, with its heady blend of soul and calypso and a per-

formance by the Lashing Dogs.

The main focus of the day on Sunday is the Freedom

March and Emancipation service held at the Sunday

Morning Well, where the proclamation was first read in

1834. In the evening, the Miss BVI Pageant will be crown-

ing a new queen at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex

starting at 8pm.

Serious partygoers will be partying on through the

night as the next day, August Monday, is the big one!

Starting at 3am, the Steel Band on the Road will set the

pace for the day’s activities which include the Rise and

Shine Tramp, which starts at 4am.

The Cultural Parade begins in the

afternoon where hundreds of peo-

ple line the street to watch the dec-

orated floats with their soca bands

and the colorful and energetic

dance troupes pass by. There is lots

of dancing, music and good times

as the whole crowd jumps to the

beat, so join in the fun and have a

Dear Koren,

I am a 29 year old professional man who recently

returned home after studying abroad and I find myself

attracted to two women. One is a professional also and

she is really intelligent. The other one is also intelligent,

but not in the academic sense and she has three children

and a low paying job, which means I would have to take

care of her. I really want to settle down, but I don’t want

to date two women, so how do I make up my mind?

Dear One Woman Man,

You are lucky to be in the fortunate position of hav-

ing options; however, you will have to say goodbye to

one of these ladies at some point. The earlier the better,

so as not to lead anyone of them on.

Ask yourself, “who am I” and “what makes me

happy?” That will give you an idea of what kind of woman

you want to be with. If you have a quick temper, you

would probably be better off with someone who is calm

or if you are a bad spender, a woman who is frugal or

financially savvy might complement you more.

Make sure you look at lasting qualities and not just

short-term or external attributes. It’s nice to have some-

one good-looking, but in the long run, you want real core

values – someone who is unselfish, can compromise,

nicate and who is good in a

Sometimes we meet some-

one and they constantly

bring out the worst in us; there are frequent arguments

and sometimes insecurity and jealousy. Try to avoid

those situations and instead choose the person who

calls you out on your weak sides and sees your potential

– not just who you are, but who you can be.

Someone having children is not a liability once you

are prepared to be a step-father and you are emotional-

ly and financially ready for the added responsibility. If

this woman has a low paying job, that does not automat-

ically mean you will have to take care of her completely;

at least she has some income. The other one could lose

her job and be in a worse position. The attitude of being

ambitious is more important than the current job.

I hope you are able to make the right decision that

will ensure long-term happiness and whoever you

choose, be kind enough to let the other one down gently,

letting her know you did appreciate the time spent with

her. You never know if things don’t work out, you might

find yourself right back at her doorstep.

Kill The IrishmanAs far as gangster movies go this is one with a

heart. And that heart is worn on the sleeve of the strong

and robust character Danny Green (Ray Stevenson) an

Irish Catholic immigrant trying to carve out a living in

the depressed city of Cleveland during the 1970s. A

man of ethical convictions, Danny doesn’t start off on

the wrong side of the law, but like an inner city Robin

Hood, he finds robbing from the rich to benefit his fam-

ily, a sort of social justice.

As he rises in power and clout (through violence

and intimidation) many of the key mob gangs perceive

him as a threat and a price is put on his head. The prob-

lem is no one can seem to “finish the job.” Danny

miraculously lives through one attempt after another

on his life with panache and style, as he says “with the

grace of God on my shoulder.” The impenetrable gang-

ster is not so fortunate in his private life and his wife

takes the children, packs up and heads to a safer neigh-

borhood.

However, Danny is undeterred and soon the high life

with booze, money and women at his disposal leaves

him feeling hollow. Yet the “luck of the Irish” remains

with him and Danny soon breaks free of working for the

mob and begins to work for himself. The movie has

more twists and turns, and probably one too many car

bombings in a single film, but staying true to life as the

story does, it follows the real life man and a much pub-

licized time of gang violence in Cleveland. Val Kilmer

and Christopher Walken are recognizable in their roles

as fellow gangsters, but newcomer Ray Stevenson car-

ries the film with a singularly brilliant performance.

vinced the government to declare August Tuesday a spe-

cial holiday for horse racing.

This August’s event in the refurbished and modern-

ized track will see a new generation of horses competing

for the coveted Premier’s Cup. Trevelyan, the winner of

last year’s Premier’s Cup, will be a heavy favorite and a

popular contender in Tuesday’s race. But others, includ-

ing Good Prospecting, winner of St. Thomas Governor’s

Cup and East End Tap which placed second, will be

among several hot rivals determined to run away with

the cup.

affair. For more than a century and a half, islanders have

gotten together on the first Monday in August to cele-

brate their liberation and island life with picnics, scratch

band music and games that run the gamut from tug of

war to egg and spoon, donkey and sack races.

Carrot Bay Fiesta, starting on Thursday August 4th

and running to the 6th, celebrates the traditional each

year with its fiesta. Jam packed with cultural activities,

food and music, the Fiesta will include, as always, old

fashioned games for kids and adults, fungi music, fishing

tournaments and food ranging from fried fish to goat

water. But the best new soca and reggae bands will be

blasting out their distinctive sounds throughout the

Fiesta as well. This year Taurus Riley is the headliner

along with Triple K and Kaos and others.

August Tuesday is also a day of traditional Festival

fun with water sports held at the Road Town Jetty in the

morning. Swimming contests, a greased pole contest,

kayak races and a Virgin Islands sloop race held between

the Premier and the Governor are among the morning’s

activities. In the afternoon, the crowds head for Sea

Cows Bay where horse racing is on the agenda. The orig-

inal horse races were run in the streets of Road Town

near the old Agricultural Station, with the first race to be

held at the Albion racetrack in Sea Cows Bay in 1956. This

Liberate Yourself...The rays are bright.

Blinding. Stifling in

fact. You can almost

see the beams of heat

ripple through the

atmosphere as they

toast your skin. You try

to escape it, run from it,

but to no avail. The sun is an adept stalker with an insa-

tiable desire to make each step sweatier than the last. It

knows no personal buffer and can be handed no warrant.

It is unrelenting, unyielding but above all merciless. It is

the middle of the summer so there is no escaping it. THE

HEAT HAS YOU.

Advice? Don’t fight it, embrace it. It’s Festival! And

what better way to take these words to heart than to go

running wild on the streets in scantily clad clothes that

sparkle, dazzle and make every ‘civilized’ person look

twice at such a spectacle. Yes indeed, Festival is here! It’s

the remedy that makes you forget about the heat and the

constant sweat. The flags are already up and the Village

is in full swing. So prepare yourself mentally and physi-

cally for two weeks of relentless partying. Or is this so?

I don’t know. It could just be my imagination but I

get the feeling that come Festival time, people just may

be a little too reserved. Now, by no means am I endors-

ing vulgarity on the streets, to frighten our tourists and

forever scar the little toddlers amongst them. But I am

encouraging everyone to loosen up, unwind and to

pierce this veneer of bashfulness that we have seeming-

ly succumbed to. Yes, Festival is a spectacle but it is a cel-

ebration too. A celebration of emancipation: celebration

being the operative word.

And celebration, by definition, includes everyone.

From the little kids that have just learnt to walk to the

older people, I say to you, get out there and live a little.

Liberate yourself from the normalities of life, break the

routine and pay no attention to what’s irking you.

Reinvigorate yourself with joy, happiness and fun. Get a

little wild, for it’s time to flaunt your colors. Let them

sparkle in the light. Be high off pride and immune to

apprehension and embarrassment.

Safety is key but one must be mindful of the distinc-

tion between being safe and being conservative. This is

a time of benevolence and altruism, so by no means am

I suggesting that we unshackle danger, but let this year’s

motto be liberation. Not only the liberation of our ances-

tors but the liberation of ourselves too.

Maxi Priest this Friday as he

tops the bill at this year’s

Festival. Maxi Priest, is a

British reggae vocalist of Jamaican decent and is best

known for singing reggae music with a R&B influence.

He became one of the first international successes and

one of the top reggae fusion entertainers of all time.

In the late 80s, with hits including Some Guys Have

All the Luck and a cover of Cat Steven's classic Wild

Worldgave Maxi his first U.S. smash hit. Roots tracks like

his duet with Beres Hammond, How Can We Ease The

Pain took Maxi’s music to an entirely new level, gaining

him worldwide recognition.

Since then, Maxi has enjoyed tremendous success

as a singer, often collaborating with other artists such as

Roberta Flack, Shabba Ranks and Shaggy and he has

enjoyed popularity and recognition around the world

with his uplifting and distinctive sound. In fact, he is the

most successful reggae solo artist in the world, second

only to the legendary Bob Marley. He has enjoyed

numerous worldwide hits as well as a number one pop

chart smash and is widely credited with helping spread

the gospel of reggae and Caribbean music.

Carrot Bay FiestaOne of the highlights ofFestival is definitely the open-ing of the Carrot Bay CulturalFiesta which kicks off onThursday, 4th August withthe Winston MolyneauxFishing Tournament and laterthe magical Torch LightProcession from Lower CarrotBay to the Cultural FiestaVillage. There will be shuttlebuses each night from Road

Town (next to Colombian Emeralds) and from theCapoon’s Bay Field. On Friday, family fun continues withlime and spoon, bucket races, egg toss and the famousdonkey races.

This year the tug-a-war rematch will be hot withmarried couples try to make a comeback after losing lastyear to their single counterparts! Headlining the last lapon Saturday will be reggae artist Taurus Riley and socagiant KrosFyah, so make sure you get out to experiencethe Cultural Fiesta for a great end to Festival 2011.

Drink the Bar Dry at the JRThe Jolly Roger is packing up for the summer, but

not before it has one last party this Saturday, 30th July.It’s the infamous, not to mention hangover inducing,“Drink the Bar Dry” party. All it costs is just $25 to drinkthem dry, so start early at 6pm and enjoy your favoritecocktails at this popular West End venue. Live entertain-ment will be provided by DA’Tis from 7pm to get you inthe party mood.

However, all is not lost, as from August 4th we willbe transported back to the dark days of prohibition in theform of “Larry’s Speakeasy.” A limited bar and pub grubmenu will be available from 5pm till late. The Speakeasywill not open every day so call ahead to make sure itsopen on 545-6967.

Miss BVI 2011Following the unveiling of the five Miss BVI

Contestants earlier this month, these glamorous ladiesare now making their final preparations to stun thejudges at this year’s Miss BVI Pageant to be held at theMulti-Purpose Complex at 8pm on Sunday, 31st July. Thewinner will become Miss BVI 2011 and her first publicappearance will be at the Annual Cultural Parade the verynext day. There’s as much anticipation for the start of the sea-

son as there is for its end. While very team or individual

has high hopes only one team or individual in an event

ends on a high.

It was that type of weekend for the Pythons, who

not only repeated as BVI Softball Association Irvine

“Fletcher” Scatliffe league champs, but matched two

teams before them in doing so—the Eagles and the

Hawks—who also went through the season undefeated

and won a title.

The Pythons—formerly the ESHS Rams—has won

22 straight games and suffered only two losses in the

last two years – both in 2010 – winning 40 of 42 games

over the stretch. Simply remarkable! Thanks to the

coaching and guidance of Terry “Chino” Chinnery, who

has worked diligently over the years in his dedication to

the craft and building the team. It clearly shows patience,

hard work and consistency does pay off.

Meanwhile, on the track, it was another set of sea-

son ending highs. Competing at the Pan Am Jr. Track and

Field Championships in Miramar, Florida, Jevonte Croal in

the Long Jump, Kanishque Todman in the Heptathlon and

Raheem “Ras” Taylor in the 800m completed their sea-

sons on a high.

It was a home coming of sorts for Croal who attend-

ed Western High School, in his international debut where

he cut the sand after leaping 6.82 meters (22’4”) to fin-

ish fifth in the competition.

“To me I didn’t perform too well because I know I

can do better,” Croal said. “This was my first big meet of

the season and was a great experience for me. I was foul-

ing a lot and my run up was not on point. But, I’ve learnt

that I have to work a lot harder to reach my goals.”

Todman, in the second Heptathlon of her career,

added 516 points on to the 3548 points total she estab-

lished during last years CAC Jr. Championships, when she

scored 4046 points. Todman crashed into the fourth bar-

rier in the 100m Hurdles, but recovered to finish in 17.06

seconds. She cleared a personal best 1.49m (4’10”) in

the High Jump; had a 9.21m (30’2”) throw in the Shot Put

and ran a wind aided 26.79 seconds in the 200m to end

the first day with 2407 points.

Todman had a wind assisted 5.56m (18’3”) mark in

the Long Jump on Sunday, tossed the Javelin 22.09m

(72’6”) and ran 2:36.00 in the 800m for her total to finish

seventh.

“From home, my coach told me I can make 4000

points and I achieved it,” Todman pointed out. “The

events in which I thought I’d get personal bests in I didn’t

and the ones I thought I would fall down on, I got person-

al bests in.

Taylor ended his season with an 800m personal

best of one minute, 57.84 seconds, lowering his previous

best from 1:58.33. “I was expecting more but I can’t beat

up myself because I ended my season with a personal

best,” he noted.

the Exterminator” launch-

to focus on the day-to-

day operation of Vexcon,

Bretherton’s family-run

extermination business

outside Shreveport, LA.

Also on the payroll are Bretherton’s brother, Ricky;

his mother, Donnie; and his father, called Big Bill. The

working uniform of the company — mostly black with sil-

ver studs and a skull-and-crossbones motif — reflects

Bretherton’s personal style.

In the new season, Vexcon is moving beyond the

borders of Louisiana to tackle pest problems in other

states. Bretherton and Vexcon head to the Florida

Everglades to deal with pythons, to Texas to wrestle

gators, to Arizona to chase a herd of sharp-toothed

javelinas and to South Carolina to fend off geese with an

umbrella.

According to Bretherton, this is only the tip of the

iceberg. “I don’t think production quite realizes,” he

says, “that we’ve got another four or five years once we

hit the road, because there’s so much out there.”

Donnie Bretherton relates the incident that set her

son on his eventual career path.

“When Billy was a kid,” she says, “he got stung real-

ly bad by fire ants that stung him so bad that he lost

every one of his toenails. What was amazing about it, he

never forgot that. That was always in the back of his

mind, to take care of the insects after that happened.” As

to whether his motivation became revenge against

pests, Billy Bretherton says, “Not really against anything

but fire ants and wasps.”
