Making Relationships Work

The quality of your life is all about the quality of your

relationships.

People are often obnoxious, disappointing, irritating, rude and hard to

get along with.

People skills can be learned.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound

more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Philippians 1:9

Loved people love.

How to abide in Christ

• Meet God in the morning.

• Commit to 100% obedience.

• Meditate on God’s word through the day.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact

you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your

mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that

it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

What percent of our talk should NOT be helpful in

building others up?

building others up?

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your

mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that

it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called

“Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s

deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13

And let us consider how we may spur one another on

toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting

together,

as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one

another—and all the more as you see the Day

approaching. Hebrews 10:24–25

When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples,

but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he

really was a disciple.

But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He

told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and

that the Lord had spoken to him,

and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name

of Jesus. So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in

Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. Acts 9:26–28

(NIV)

The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of

people believed and turned to the Lord.

News of this reached the church in

Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to

Antioch.

When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged

them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He

was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and

faith,

and a great number of people were

brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas

went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and

when he found him, he brought him to

Antioch.

So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul

met with the church and taught great numbers of

people. The disciples were

called Christians first at Antioch. Acts 11:21–26

(NIV)

Move toward others move away•Then Barnabas went

to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. Acts 11:25

Lift up when others put down• Joseph, a Levite from

Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), Acts 4:36 (NIV)

Accept when others reject• But Barnabas took him and brought

him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. Acts 9:27-28 (NIV2011)

Believe in when others don’t• Barnabas wanted to take John, also

called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. Acts 15:37–40 (NIV)

Risk when others play it safe.

•  When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. Acts 9:26 (NIV2011)
