PROBLEM STATEMENT

Lightning flashes at our operations are hazardous to the:

• Safety of people.

• Machines and structures.

• Contents of machines and structures.

Note: No proven devices or methods to prevent lightning discharges.

However, can lower or manage the risk below a TOLERABLE LEVEL.

Existing Protection:

• Red alert system / Lightning Alert and Response System.

• Operations and personnel are informed via the approved communication channels when a storm is

approaching and the precautionary measures required.

Significant time and production losses during Red Alert especially with shift changes.

OBJECTIVE

To design and install Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) at Klipspruit Colliery to ensure safe zones for

persons during lightning storms (red-alerts).

Focus

• Dedicated safe hardparks and walkways to allow operators to safely embark and disembark from

machines.

• Safe area and structure at diesel refuel bay to allow operators to refuel tyre equipment during a red alert.

• Dedicated safe walkways between the office buildings, stores, workshops and at the ROM crushline.

Note: KPS LPS system does not permit any work to be carried out in the external safe zone.

ROLLING SPHERE METHOD

• The rolling sphere method (SANS 62305-3) used to determine the external lightning safe zones / areas.

• NOTE: The rolling sphere method can only be used with structures or buildings that complies with the

electrical installation protective earthing in accordance with SANS10142.

• The protect spaced is the volume not penetrated by the rolling sphere.

• The rolling sphere radius are determined by the LPL which is determined by the risk assessment. .

ROLLING SPHERE METHOD C’NTD

• Walkways and hardparks A minimum safety height of 2.5m.

METHODOLOGY

1) REQUEST FOR LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM (LPS)

• Identify and select area where lightning protection is required.

• The characteristics of a LPS are determined by the characteristics of the structure or area to be

protected.

Page 9: LIGHTNING PROTECTION INSTALLATION - SACEA Colliery_Lightning Protection...CODES & STANDARDS SANS 10313 –Protection against lightning –Physical damage to structures and life hazard.

METHODOLOGY

2) RISK ASSESSMENT AND REQUIRED LEVEL OF PROTECTION

• Tolerable risk of not more than 10-5 (SANS 62305-2), to protect against the loss of life.

• If the actual / current risk is below the tolerable risk then no additional lightning protection is required.

• The risk assessment takes into account the following:

• Lightning flash point (direct / indirect)

• Type of damage and loss (human life, equipment, etc.)

• Frequency, probability and other required factors (ground flash density, collection area, etc.)

• Once the overall risk is determined then the required protection measures and selection of LPL shall be

made by the LPS designer to reduce the risk below the tolerable level.

NOTE THAT THE LPL / CLASS of LPS HAVE TO BE DETERMINED BY RISK ASSESSMENT

METHODOLOGY

3) EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE & PROTECTION

• All existing infrastructure inside the LPS system area have to be included in the design.

• Steel structures

• Lines connected to the structure

• Pipe lines entering the area

• Hazardous material, etc.

• Compliance to SANS 10142 protective earthing requirements and COC.

• RSM to determine the existing external safe zone – Existing Safe Lightning Protection Plan (EPP).

•METHODOLOGY

4) ADDITIONAL CONTROLS

• If the actual / current risk is more than the tolerable risk then the risk will have to be reduced to an

acceptable level by selecting the correct protection measures.

• These protection measures may include but are not limited to the following:

1. Air termination systems

2. Equipotential bonding

3. Earth termination systems

4. Down conductor systems

5. Surge protection

6. Warning signs / notices

Page 12: LIGHTNING PROTECTION INSTALLATION - SACEA Colliery_Lightning Protection...CODES & STANDARDS SANS 10313 –Protection against lightning –Physical damage to structures and life hazard.

•METHODOLOGY

5) FINAL DESIGN

Need to include the following:

• Initial risk assessment

• Existing Protection – EPP

• Additional controls – externally and internally.

• Final design - Final Safe Lightning Protection Plan (FPP).

Page 13: LIGHTNING PROTECTION INSTALLATION - SACEA Colliery_Lightning Protection...CODES & STANDARDS SANS 10313 –Protection against lightning –Physical damage to structures and life hazard.

•MAINTENANCE AND RECORD KEEPING

MAINTENANCE

• Monthly inspections and annual testing of integrity of the earth continuity and equipotential bonding.

• Testing should be performed before the start of each lightning season.

• A lightning protection system shall also be inspected and maintained after an actual / suspected lightning

strike.

COMPLIANCE / RECORD KEEPING

• A system shall be in place to ensure that all documents and certificates are being stored and managed.

• Risk Assessments

• COCs

• EPP & FPP, etc.
