Message from Mr. Van Skoik's

Horticulture class: With help from

the cafeteria staff and our students

here at Zucker, we will be making

compost from our cafeteria food

waste. Please join in helping us

grow some healthy veggies by not

throwing landfill materials in the

compost bins at lunch. Thank you!

Zuckerbook is holding a car wash on Wednesday

October 19th from 3:45-5:00pm to raise money for

publishing the next two issues. Suggested

donation is $10 per car wash. With a $10 donation

you may buy a past issue of Zuckerbook for

$5. Refreshments will be available for purchase

as well. Come and hang out and help Zuckerbook

keep our students published!

South Carolina State University Youth Service

Day is Saturday, November 12th. If you would

like to attend, the deadline to turn in your

permission slip and money is October

28th. The trip is limited to 40 students, first

come first served. See Ms. Anderson in room

Today’s notable Hispanic

American is Laurie Hernandez.

She is an Olympic gymnast.

She was born on June 9, 2000

in Brunswick, New Jersey. She

is of Puerto Rican descent.

She started her elite

gymnastics career in 2012

when she was 11 years old. At

the 2016 Summer Olympics in

Rio de Janeiro, she won a gold

medal in the team event and

a silver medal on the balance

beam.

Ricardo Montalban was an

Hispanic American actor. He

was born in Mexico City on

November 25, 1920 to Spanish

immigrants. When he was a

teenager, he moved to Los

Angeles. He began his acting

career in New York City when he

was 20 years old. He

established the Nosotros

Foundation in 1970 to advocate

for Latinos in the movie and

television industry. He died in

2009.

Ellen Ocoha is a former

astronaut and director of the

Johnson Space Center in

Houston, Texas. She was

born in Los Angeles on May

10, 1958. Her father is from

Mexico. She was the first

Hispanic woman in the world

to go into space. She has a

doctorate degree in

electrical engineering from

Stanford University. She is a

classically trained flutist.

Sonia Sotomayor is an

Associate Justice of the

United States Supreme

Court. She is the first

Hispanic to serve on

the Supreme Court. She

was born in The Bronx,

New York City on June

25, 1954 to Puerto

Rican parents. She

became a Supreme

Court justice in 2009.

Prince Royce is a musician

and actor. His real name is

Geoffrey Royce Rojas. He

was born in The Bronx, New

York City on May 11, 1989 to

parents from the Dominican

Republic. He started singing

in elementary school and

felt really comfortable on

stage. He sings in two

languages, English and

Spanish.

Selena Gomez is an actress

and singer. She was born on

July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie,

Texas. Her father is of Mexican

descent. She started her

career acting in the tv series

Barney & Friends when she

was 9 years old. In 2010 she

released her own line of

clothing with Kmart stores.

She has been a UNICEF

ambassador since she was 17.

Nikki Bella is a professional

wrestler and actress. Her

real name is Stephanie

Nicole Garcia-Colace. She

was born on November 21,

1983 in San Diego,

California. Her dad is

Mexican and her mom is

Italian. Before she became a

wrestler, she played soccer

in high school.

Marco Rubio is a U.S.

Senator from Florida. He

was born May 28, 1971 in

Miami, Florida. He is the

son of Cuban immigrants.

He has a law degree from

the University of Miami. He

ran for President in 2016

but finished third behind

Ted Cruz and Donald

Trump.

Rey Misterio is a

professional wrestler. His

real name is Oscar

Guiterrez. He was born on

December 11, 1974 in Chula

Vista, California. His

parents are from Mexico.

He was trained by his

uncle Rey Mysterio Sr.

Lauren Jauregui is in a

girl group called “Fifth

Harmony.” She was born

on June 27, 1996 in Cuba

and moved to Florida

when she was 2. She is

known for having the

strongest vocals in “Fifth

Harmony.”

Bella Thorne is an actress

and singer. She was born

on October 8, 1997 in

Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Her father is from Cuba.

She also has Irish and

Italian ancestry. She

began her acting career at

age six.

Jordana Brewster is an actress

and model. She was born on April

26, 1980 in Panama City, Panama to

a Brazilian mother. Brazil is the

only Latin American country where

Spanish is not the official

language so technically Jordana is

not of Hispanic descent but is

included here because of her

family connection to Latin America.

She is a direct descendant of one

of the Mayflower pilgrims. She is

fluent in Portuguese.

Oscar de La Hoya is an Hispanic

American professional boxer. He

was born February 4, 1973 in Los

Angeles. His parents are from

Mexico, and he holds dual Mexican

and American citizenship. He

started boxing at the age of 6.

When he was 15, he won the

National Junior Olympics. In 1992,

he won a gold medal at the

Summer Olympic Games in

Barcelona, Spain.

Danny Trejo is an Hispanic

American actor who has

appeared in numerous

Hollywood Films, including

“Spy Kids.” He was born on May

16, 1944 in Los Angeles,

California to Mexican parents.

Armando Christian Perez,

known as Pitbull, is an Hispanic

American rapper. He was born

on January 15, 1981 in Miami,

Florida to Cuban parents.

Growing up, Pitbull was

incluenced by the Miami bass

genre of pop music. In high

school, he focused his career

on rapping. He says he chose

the name Pitbull because “they

bite to lock” and “are

everything that I am.”

Jennifer Lopez, also known as

J-Lo, was born on July 24, 1969

in The Bronx, New York to

Puerto Rican parents. She is an

actress, choreographer, singer,

author, and fashion designer.

She is regarded as the “most

influential Hispanic performer

in the United States.”

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a

famous singer. She was born on

April 16, 1971 in Corpus Christi, Texas

She had always dreamed about

singing ever since she was a little

girl and always sang at a restaurant

when she was growing up. After

every concert, she always asked her

dad how she did. . She died on March

31, 1995 after being shot by a jealous

fan club member .

César Chávez was born on March 31,

1927 in Yuma, Arizona. He died on

April 23, 1993. César Chávez was a

Mexican American labor leader and

civil rights activist. He co-founded

the National Farm Workers

Association. He wanted to help the

migrant farm workers that were

working under bad conditions. He

was successful in getting better

conditions for the workers.
