The Difference

Incandescent Light Bulb:

-electricity flows through a filament which becomes white hot and glows. -75% of the energy is released as heat.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb:

-electricity flows through a gas.-wastes little heat.-lasts 7-10 times longer.

-contains mercury!

How It Works

Inside a CFL, there are six main phases: -The Base(1) plugs in to the socket.-The Ballast(2) transfers the electricity.-The Electrodes(3) release the Argon atoms(4) into the lamp. -The mercury atoms inside collide with the Argon atoms(5), which causes an ultraviolet light. -The ultraviolet light passes through the phosphors(6), which then emits white light.

Almost no heat is generated, only light!

This process could not happen without the help of the some non-

renewable resources. These resources are becoming scarce because they are so important.
