Convention of the Diocese of Idaho

November 9 – 11, 2018

Friday Evening, Nov 9 Adapted from New Zealand Prayer Book

Approach

The angels of God guard us through the night,

and quieten the powers of darkness.

The Spirit of God be our guide

to lead us to peace and to glory.

It is but lost labor that we haste to rise up early, and so late take rest, and eat the bread

of anxiety. For those beloved of God are given gifts even while they sleep.

Silence

My brothers and sisters, our help is in the name of the eternal God,

who is making the heavens and the earth.

Dear God,

thank you for all that is good, for our creation and for our humanity,

for the stewardship you have given us of this planet earth,

for the gifts of life and of one another, for your love which is unbounded and eternal.

O thou, most holy and beloved, my Companion, my Guide upon the way,

my bright evening star. We repent the wrongs we have done:

Silence

We have wounded your love.

O God, heal us.

We stumble in the darkness.

Light of the world transfigure us.

We forget that we are your home.

Spirit of God, dwell in us.

Eternal Spirit, living God, in whom we live and move and have our being,

all that we are, have been, and shall be is known to you,

to the very secret of our hearts and all that rises to trouble us.

Living flame burn into us, cleansing wind, blow through us,

fountain of water, well up within us, that we may love and praise in deed and in truth.

Invocation

Eternal Spirit, flow through our being and open our lips,

that our mouths may proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the God of love.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Psalm 31

In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame; *

deliver me in your righteousness.

Incline your ear to me; *

make haste to deliver me.

Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,

for you are my crag and my stronghold; *

for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *

for you are my tower of strength.

Into your hands I commend my spirit, *

for you have redeemed me,

O LORD, O God of truth.

John 15:1,6-16

Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. Whoever does not

abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered,

thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for

whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you

bear much fruit and become my disciples.

As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my

commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's

commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy

may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has

greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you

do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant

does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have

made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose

me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that

the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.”

Now the day is over Hymnal 1982 #42

Prayers

Into your hands, O God, I commend my spirit,

for you have redeemed me, O God of truth and love.

Keep me, O God, as the apple of an eye;

hide me under the shadow of your wings.

Preserve us, O God, while waking,

and guard us while sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christ,

and asleep may rest in your peace.

Song of Simeon

Praise be to God, I have lived to see this day.

God’s promise is fulfilled, and my duty done.

At last you have given me peace, for I have seen with my own eyes

the salvation you have prepared for all nations - a light to the world in its

darkness, and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be God, sustaining, redeeming, sanctifying,

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever.

Amen.

Preserve us, O God, while waking,

and guard us while sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christ,

and asleep may rest in your peace.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,

Source of all that is and that shall be,

Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!

The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!

Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!

Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today, feed us.

In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.

In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.

From trials too great to endure, spare us.

From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,

now and for ever. Amen.

I will lie down in peace and take my rest,

for it is in God alone that I dwell unafraid.

Let us bless the Earth-maker, the Pain-bearer, the Life-giver,

let us praise and exalt God above all for ever.

May God’s name be praised beyond the farthest star,

glorified and exalted above all for ever.

Lord, it is night. The night is for stillness. Let us be still in the presence of God.

It is night after a long day. What has been done has been done;

what has not been done has not been done;

let it be.

The night is dark. Let our fears of the darkness of the world

and of our own lives rest in you.

The night is quiet. Let the quietness of your peace enfold us, all dear to us,

and all who have no peace.

The night heralds the dawn. Let us look expectantly to a new day, new joys,

new possibilities. In your name we pray. Amen.

The blessing of God, the eternal goodwill of God, the shalom of God, the wildness and

the warmth of God, be among us and between us, now and always.

The divine Spirit dwells in us.

Thanks be to God.

Saturday Morning, Nov 10 Adapted from the New Zealand Prayer Book

The Preparation

You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

and you shall be my witnesses. Acts 1:8

Great is the Lord and worthy of all praise.

Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor,

power and might, be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.

We all are one in mission Wonder, Love and Praise #778

Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us praise and worship God

who has called us together.

Let us celebrate God’s majesty, and delight in the wonder of God’s love.

Together we shall confess our sins and receive assurance that we are forgiven.

As the scriptures are read, we can allow God’s word to speak to us,

and ponder its meaning for our lives.

In our prayers, we give thanks for God’s goodness, we pray for others

as well as for ourselves, and we offer our lives anew in Christ’s service.

All this we do, because we believe in the presence among us

of our Savior Jesus Christ, and in the mighty power of the Holy Spirit.

Hear these words of scripture.

Love one another, for love is of God, and whoever loves is born of God and knows God.

Spirit of God, search our hearts.

Let us, in silence, remember our need for God’s forgiveness.

Silence

Let us confess our sins to God.

Almighty and merciful God, we have sinned against you,

in thought, word and deed.

We have not loved you with all our heart.

We have not loved others as our Savior Christ loves us.

We are truly sorry.

In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are,

and direct what we shall be; that we may delight in your will

and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Almighty God, who pardons all who truly repent, forgive our sins, strengthen us by the

Holy Spirit, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

The Ministry of the Word

O come, let us sing to the Lord,

let us rejoice in the rock of our salvation.

We sing to you, O God, and bless your name;

and tell of your salvation from day to day.

We proclaim your glory to the nations,

your praise to the ends of the earth.

Psalm 15

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh,

that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went

to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large

city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And

he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of

Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on

sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his

mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not

do it.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

Thanks be to God.

The Apostles′ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.

Amen.

Make your ways known upon earth, O God,

your saving power among all peoples.

Renew your Church in holiness,

and help us to serve you with joy.

Guide the leaders of this and every nation,

that justice may prevail throughout the world.

The Word of God

Psalm 86

Bow down your ear, O Lord, and answer me, *

for I am poor and in misery.

Keep watch over my life, for I am faithful; *

save your servant who puts his trust in you.

Be merciful to me, O Lord, for you are my God; *

I call upon you all the day long.

Gladden the soul of your servant, *

for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, *

and great is your love toward all who call upon you.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer, *

and attend to the voice of my supplications.

In the time of my trouble I will call upon you, *

for you will answer me.

Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord, *

nor anything like your works.

All nations you have made will come and

worship you, O Lord, *

and glorify your Name.

For you are great;

you do wondrous things; *

and you alone are God.

Teach me your way, O Lord,

and I will walk in your truth; *

knit my heart to you that I may fear your Name.

I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart, *

and glorify your Name for evermore.

For great is your love toward me; *

you have delivered me from the nethermost Pit.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

God’s love was revealed among us so that we might live through Jesus.

1 John 4.7-11,12b

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; everyone who loves is born of God

and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the

love of God was revealed among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that

we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us,

and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much,

we ought also to love one another. For if we love one another, God abides in us, and

God’s love will be perfected in us.

Magnificat

You have looked with favor on your lowly servant, from this day

all generations will call her blessed.

Silence may be kept.

At this time you are invited to add your Thanksgivings and Intercessions either silently or aloud.

Silence may be kept.

O God our protector, by whose mercy the world turns safely into darkness

and returns again to light: we give into your hands our unfinished tasks, our unsolved

problems, and our unfulfilled hopes; for you alone are our sure defense and bring us

lasting peace in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our

neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our

whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

The Lessons

A reading from Isaiah Isaiah 58:1-9a

Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people

their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and

delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did

not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight

to draw near to God.

“Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?”

Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look,

you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you

do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to

humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and

ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of

the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your

bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the

naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall

break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall

go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say,

Here I am.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 62:6-14 Choir sings Antiphon; Congregation repeats Antiphon

In God is my safety and my honor; *

Congregation repeats Antiphon.

Put no trust in extortion;

in robbery take no empty pride; *

though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, *

that power belongs to God.

Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, *

for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

A reading from Romans Romans 12:9-21

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with

mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in

spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.

Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who

rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be

haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not

repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is

possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge

yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I

will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty,

give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their

heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Will you come and follow me Hymns Ancient & Modern #510

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Mark 1:16-20

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and

saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and

believe in the good news.”

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew

casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me

and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed

him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John,

who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their

father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon

21

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down

from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the

Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death

and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds

from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

The Prayers of the People

Deacon: We have heard today of the cost of discipleship. That we may be empowered

to bear the name of Christ, let us pray for ourselves and for the whole world,

saying: Lord, hear our prayer.

The church of God is fragmented; we need the healing of the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for

the church.

Lord, hear our prayer.

The world cries out for an increase of justice and for an end to war. Let us pray for the

world.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Our country is striving for equality and a better life for all its citizens. Let us pray for our

nation.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Our community seeks a better sense of its gifts and more wisdom into its problems. Let

us pray for our community.

Lord, hear our prayer.

We know many people who are sick and suffering, who have public hurt or private

pain. Let us pray for all in need.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Our lives have been enriched by the lives of all those like Moses, the elders, and the

disciples who have gone before us in the faith. Let us pray for grace to be disciples.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered

Bishop:

Almighty God, by you Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and

on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this

fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to

your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our

intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and

ever. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Sanctus Enriching Our Music

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Miriam, Deborah, and Ruth; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN Lord's Prayer And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Salley Gardens, arr.
