fortheprogrammeandlovedeveryminuteof
hertimeinSarawak.“Alotofpeopleasked
meaboutatypicaldayatthecentrebut
honestly,therewasn’tany,”shelaughed.As
volunteers,shesays,theyperformedanimal
husbandryduties,includingcleaningthe
orangutan’snightdensanddistributingand
hidingtheirfoodintotheiroutdoorenclosures
toencouragethemtoforage–anatural
behaviour.
“Iwasabitapprehensiveinthebeginningof
theprogramme,sinceI’dhadnoexperience
whatsoeverinworkingwithanimals.Butas
volunteers,youarealwayssupervisedand
you’renotexpectedtodoanyoftheexperts’
work.We’rejustthereprovidingthecentre
withthe‘extrahands’astherewerejustso
manythingshappeningatthesanctuary.”

volunteersalsohadtheopportunitytoteach

localcommunitiesinvolvedwiththecentre.
“Meetingthelocalswasthehighlightofmy
timethere.Itwasgreattobeabletointeract
withthemonapersonallevel,gettinginvolved
withtheircultureandlearningthehistoryof
thepeople.It’sgreattonotjustbeanobserver
whenyou’reinaforeigncountry.”

gotonthephoneandthankedhimforcallingbecauseIdidn’t
havemanyfriends.Ithoughtitwashysterical–theyoungboy
didnot.Ihaveneverseriouslyconsideredstand-upcomedy
becausemyhumourcomesoutofreactingoffotherthingsor
people.Idon’tthinkIcouldgenerateitmyself.
TravelhostSamanthaBrownistheenvyofmany.Herglobalescapadesinthe

bathrooms. Why do you love them so much, and what
would you find in the ideal hotel?

Weneedlightingthatmakesuslookandfeelgood.Youdon’t
wanttostartthedaythinking,“Boy,Ilookterrible.”Inanideal
bathroom,Iwouldfindanextra-deepbathandalotofcounter
spaceforallthoseproductsandvitamins.Iloveitwhenhotels
incorporatedrawerspaceunderthesink;thenIcanstore
thingsinthemsothecounterremainsuncluttered,andIwon’t
beknockingthingsoverwhenIbrushmyteeth.Oneofmy
biggestdisappointmentsiswhenthebathroomhasaseparate
shower,butthereisnoshelftoputshampoo,razors,etc.,so
youhavetokeepbendingdowntopickthestuffup.Bythe
timeI’mdoneat6am,itfeelslikeI’vedoneaerobics.

OnthecoastofMaine,inKennebunkportorKitteryPoint.It
wouldbeatraditionalseacoasthomewithabigporchthat
lookedoutovertheoceanoraninlet.Itwouldbeforfriendsto

openkitchenwithalongkitchentableandfireplace.

can offer to others?
I’monlongflightsalot,soIcarryasmalltravelcarekit.It
containslotionformyhands,facecream,aspirin,lipbalm,an
eyemaskandearplugs.Ihaveacarry-oncasethatIusetoprop
upmyfeetandcreatemyown“La-Z-Boy”recliningchair.And
Ialwaysbringafreshlymadesandwichfrommylocaldeli,soI
canavoidairplanefood.Whenitcomestoyourcarekit,have
twoofeverything.Tworazors,twoshampoos,twonailclippers,
etc.Keeponesetforhomeandtheotherfortravel,soyoudon’t
havetokeeppackingandunpackingit.
