assured us that trials will come to His followers (John 16:33). Discipleship demands sacrifice, and Jesus never hid that cost. Consider these questions: Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing some of your closest friends? Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means alienation from your family? Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means the loss of your reputation? Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing your job? Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing your life? In some places of the world, these consequences are reality. Following Jesus doesn’t necessarily mean all these things will happen to you. If there comes a point in your life where you are faced with a choice—Jesus or the comforts of this life—which will you choose? Commitment to Christ means taking up your cross daily, giv- ing up your hopes, dreams, posses- sions, even your very life if need be for the cause of Christ. The reward is worth the price: “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25-26). Pastor David Linkugel There were great crowds following Jesus. Everyone loved the miracles, healing, and free food. Jesus was cool, the talk of the town, and the latest fad. But He knew their hearts. They loved His gifts, not the life He was calling them to. So Jesus explained what it takes to be one of His follow- ers. He said, “Take up your cross and follow Me.” Many people interpret “cross” as some burden they must carry in their lives: a strained relation- ship, a thankless job, or a physical ill- ness. That’s not what Jesus meant. In the first-century, the cross meant one thing: painful and humiliating death. Two thousand years later, we view the cross as a cherished symbol of atonement, forgiveness, grace, and love. But in Jesus’ day, the cross rep- resented torturous death. Because the Romans forced convicted criminals to carry their own crosses to the place of crucifixion, bearing a cross meant carrying their own execution device while facing ridicule along the way to death. Following Jesus is easy when life runs smoothly; our true commitment to Him is revealed during trials. Early Church

Real faith real life For Christians today faith in God can sometimes seem

flicts that Christians today encounter as they seek to live their faith in a culture that

contradicts Christian beliefs and principles Join us as we study how Gods Word ap-

plies to the conflicts we encounter as we live our faith

The Lifestyle of Faithful Stewards CS Lewis said ldquoThere are two kinds of people those who say to God lsquoThy will be donersquo and those to

whom God says lsquoAll right then have it your wayrsquo rdquo As redeemed children of God of course we desire to

belong to that first category ldquoThy will be donerdquo

On Sundays October 13 20 27 and November 3 the theme of our worship services will be the lifestyle

of faithful stewards We will learn how the Holy Spirit working through Word and Sacrament transforms

us to be more like our Chief Steward Jesus Who willingly poured out His life in giving and serving ulti-

mately sacrificing His very life for our eternal lives

As your pastor I pray that each of you will take advantage of these

opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you

might be strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here

on earth

The themes for the four Sundays are as follows

October 13 ldquoBuilding Relationshipsrdquo

October 20 ldquoWitnessing for Jesusrdquo

October 27 ldquoLiving as a Servantrdquo

November 3 ldquoGiving Joyfully and Generouslyrdquo (Commitment Sunday)

ldquoTherefore my dear brothers stand firm Let nothing move you Always

give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that

your labor in the Lord is not in vainrdquo (1 Corinthians 1558)

God has called us as Christians to join Him in His mission and chal-

lenged us to make His message of hope known in todayrsquos post-Christian culture But how do we leave our

comfort zones so that we can be empowered to share His message with others without fear

Providing Christians with the necessary tools to witness effectively is why Lutheran Hour Ministries un-

veiled its Regional Outreach Conferences (ROC) to more than 2000 attendees in 2011 and is hosting eight

more events throughout 2013 These dynamic events are all about getting the Word outmdashthe Gospel that is

You are encouraged to attend so you can learn to use your God-given gifts to share the Gospel with hurt-

ing people in ways that are culturally relevant and effective

ldquoAs a Christian it is not just about running the race at the final day itrsquos about how you trainrdquo says Rev

Gregory Seltz Speaker of The Lutheran Hour radio program ldquoWe want to empower you and give you skills

so that you will be ready for the opportunities that God is going to send your way God is going to send

people who need to hear the Good News into your life hellip Will you be readyrdquo

The conference features multi-media prominent outreach speakers hands-on witnessing opportunities

small- and large-group discussions and information-packed breakout sessions covering a variety of outreach

topics that reach todayrsquos culture There will also be fun and engaging activities for adults and kids live wor-

ship music and powerful ministry tools to enrich and inspire attendees to share the love of Jesus our spir-

itual ROCK with people in their world

The 2013 ROC series includes a conference October 18-19 at the Omaha Marriott The keynote speak-

er will be Rev Dr Robert Newton president of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District LCMS and the con-

As your pastor I pray that each of you will take advantage of these

opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you

might be strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here

on earth
