sports MAssAGE?Designed to assist an athlete before, during and

after exercise, sports massage techniques are applied to the target areas of use within a

particular sport eg. Footy – back, glutes, hamstring and calves.

Sports massage technique differs from remedial or deep tissue massage as it is designed to promote stimulation or relaxation prior to activity and mid or post

event recover.

• Pre-event massage: Faster strokes are used to warm up the athlete, or slower, longer compressions are used to assist with the ‘jitters’ before an event. • Mid-event (at quarter or half time) massage: treatment is provided to stimulate the lymphatic system which is being

placed under stress from ‘lactic’ properties. Emphasis is on reducing muscle tightness in order to prevent injury and increase athlete’s efficiency. • Post-event massage: techniques are designed to flush the body of excess lactic properties so it able to recover and muscles can function better. Athletes should avoid deeper-type massage for 2-3 days after an event as this can be an inflammatory period. To assist the body to recover we recommend a post-event recovery plan in the few days after an event such as walking in cold water for 15-20 minutes, laying down with feet elevated, avoiding prolonged sedentary periods and light cardiovascular exercise as soon as can be tolerated. • During and post-event massage: should be applied to the entire limb (always towards the heart) in order to best stimulate the lymphatic system in recovery.

What is d.o.M.s (delayed onset Muscle soreness)?D.O.M.S is a symptom of muscle damagecaused by eccentric exercise. It begins 8-24 hours after exercise, peaks 24-72 hours after exercise andgenerally subsides over the next 5-7 days.

Finding an appropriate and functional shoe for the warmer months is not always easy and too often we find ourselves experiencing foot aches and pains as a result of flimsy rubber or plastic thongs and sandals.

There are however now more and more footwear options available which allow our feet to breathe over the warmer months whilst still providing the supportive features we require to ensure proper foot function is maintained.

so What features should i looK forin a WarM Weather shoe?

WhAt if i WEAr orthotics or supportivE innErsolEs?• Look for sandals with an enclosed heel or removable foot bed which allows you to fit in your normal orthotic. Brands such as Ziera (previously known as Kumfs), Comfort or Fit are now making quite a few styles which offer these features.

• There are also many options now which provide an inbuilt support in place of your orthotic. Whilst they are not customized to your particular foot function and biomechanics like your orthotics they still may offer you adequate support during the summer months where enclosed footwear is not always appropriate. We suggest you discuss this with your Podiatrist to see if this is appropriate for your needs.

Recommended brands of warm weather footwear: Orthaheel (available fromAthletes Foot), Ziera (previously known as Kumfs), Keen, Birkinstock, Ecco or Comfort and Fit.

WArM WEAthEr Footwear Options

• The shoe must be made of appropriate materials. As a rule leather is always best, or look for natural fibre fabrics. Plastic and synthetic materials can lead to blistering and irritation, particularly with narrow straps.

• The sole of the shoe should be made from a soft shock absorbing material.

• A shoe should also contour the shape of the foot with extra support in arch region.

• The base/sole of the shoe should only bend where your foot does – at the same point as your big toe joint.

• The shoe needs some kind of fixation to secure it to your foot such as a strap across the forefoot and around the heel. More straps means less stress on the muscles in the foot as you

struggle to hold the shoe on whilst you are walking.

school shoEs for KIDS:It’s time to start thinking about supportive footwear to ensure healthy feet for the years ahead. Depending on your child’s school uniform requirements, you may have to choose a traditional leather shoe or a more sports style runner or cross trainer.

here are soMe guidelines to help you MaKe the right choice:

recoMMended brands of runners:

• Traditional school shoes should be made of good quality leather andmaterials to ensure breath ability and reduce skin irritations.

• All shoes should be rigid through the middle but flex easily at the same point the big toe joint flexes.

• All shoes should have a solid heel counter to support the rear foot and ankle.

• All shoes should have cushioning and shock absorption in the sole to reduce stresses in the lower limb and the potential for injuries.

• All shoes should have a method of fixation such as laces, buckles or Velcro, which reduces the load on muscles and joints in the foot.

• In many cases a cross trainer rather than a runner is a better choice for daily wear at school due to the durability of the shoe. Cross trainers traditionally have leather uppers, rather than the mesh on runners which tends to break down or tear more easily.

Asics, New Balance, Brooks or Ascent. The most important feature of school shoe is the way it fits your child’s foot and it’s appropriateness for their particular needs. For this reason we suggest getting fitted up at a recommended footwear retailer such as:

Peter Oram Shoes or The Athletes Foot in

Frankston, or Peninsula Children’s shoes in

Mornington.

Kids of all ages get injured too!the Most coMMon sports-related injuries in KidsAs a parent it is important for you to encourage your children to be physicallyactive, but if your child is injured, it can be difficult to know what medical orphysiotherapy treatment they need. One thing we do know as physiotherapists is to quickly determine what should be treated to avoid long term issues or further injuries that could limit your child’s potential for activity.

Throughout their growing years, children are susceptible to many types of injury however the good news is that most injuries could be avoided.

coMMon injury typesSprains and StrainsA sprain is an injury to a ligament (one of the bands of tissue that connects two or more bones at a joint) and prevents excessive movement of the joint. An ankle sprain is the most common athletic injury.

A strain is an injury to either a muscle (used to contract and produce movement) or tendon (a fibrous cord of tissue that connects muscle to bone).

When a muscle is injured, immediate attention is needed to reduce furtherdamage and weakness. Treatment within 72 hours is recommended and RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is essential.

GrOwth Plate injurieSThe growth plate is the area of developing tissues at the end of the long bones (which

are found in the hands, fingers, forearms, lower legs and feet) ofgrowing children and adolescents. When growth is

complete, sometime during adolescence, the growth plate is replaced by solid bone.

It is important to seek professional help if injury occurs in any long bone areas.

rePetitive MOtiOn injurieS(OveruSe injurieS)Painful injuries can occur from overuse of muscles and tendons.

Some of these injuries don’t always show up on x-rays but they do cause

pain and discomfort.

The injured area usually responds to immediate treatment but often there are

training and biomechanical errors that our physiotherapists can pick up and preventreoccurring.

Page 10: life support for every body - The Sports Injury Clinic• A shoe should also contour the shape of the foot with extra support in arch region. • The base/sole of the shoe should only

Preventionhere are a feW siMple steps toPrevent injuries:

• Any organised team activity should demonstrate a commit-ment to injury prevention.

• Make sure your child wears correct sportswear such as appropriate runners.

• Make warm ups and cool downs part of your child’s routine before and after sports participation. Warm up exercises make the body’s tissues warmer and moreflexible. Cool down exercises loosenmuscles that have tightened duringactivity.

• Make sure your child has access to water or electrolyte sports drink whilstplaying and training (150mls per 20mins).

• Remember to protect against the sun to reduce sun damage or furtherdehydration.

• The Sports Injury Clinic runs screening programs for sports such as running, cycling, cricket, tennis, football, dancing, and calisthenics. You can book for a physiotherapy screening with a practitioner that understands your sport and who will assess and prescribe exercises for improved performance and injury prevention.

treatMentTreatment for sports-related injuries will varyby injury. If your child suffers a soft tissue injuryor a bone injury the best treatment is easy to remember: RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression,Elevation).

cOlOur my winter…reDheaDS are the new BOMBSHELL

Red headed women are an exclusive group, however that doesn’t mean you cant join them. Seen through out history as everything from fiery warriors to seductive maidens, redheads have plenty of on going sex appeal.

Your colour can be more natural with a hint of titian or copper or more dramatic with deep auburn and mahogany tones. Which ever you choose RED is the new BLONDE.

Rich glossy brown tones that soften your features will provide that voguish allure you really want. Chocolate browns and dark mushroom tones with a few lighter honey highlights will create an amazing eye catching effect.

Blondes turn into light creamy or dark caramel tones or a soft blend of blonde on blonde as we move into Autumn. Highlights become soft and blend with a natural look.

“Be bold and bright this autumn - Winter” with Hot Reds, Magentas, Marigolds, Ink blues and purples. Maybe an all over

colour or just a splash for a hint of Avant garde and fun.

revivalS and Evolution

Autumn/winter sees us moving away from big hair and towards a 60’s and 70’s influence. Its all about revivals and evolution in the hair world.

Pixie cuts are ‘the cut’ to be wearing for this season. You will see many hidden surprises with twists, braids, pleats and unexpected contrast texture.

There is soft textured volume of frizz, crimping and back combing giving a more wild effect. The look can be sculptured or engineered solid, waved, neat or maybe a little chunky!

‘Fashion this season is all about standing out from the crowd’
