LIFE & STYLE is fast evolving

into an exciting multimedia brand as print and radio

merge seamlessly online adding new dimensions that can be enjoyed live on any digital platform wherever you happen to be.

The launch of our new video production division has created opportunities for some really fun and creative features, the first of which is currently in production.

Radio Life & Style 88.0FM and the SMD Motor Group is busy right now with a new multimedia feature due to launch on air and online in April. We have the

first few episodes shot and edited with many more to follow and we anticipate that we will continue shooting until the end of May and possibly even into June.

The technology being used is fabulous. Everything is being recorded in high definition giving you amazing resolution and fabulous images. Cameras are mounted on karts, helmets, drones in the sky above and on hand held rigs to capture every nuance of the action on the track. It’s fast and furious…and lots of fun.

Fastest around the track is a karting challenge loosely based on the popular Top Gear theme, pitting Ballito’s celebs against The Stig – a Pro Racing Driver- to see who does the fastest lap around the track at Ace Karting in Ballito to claim the ultimate title.

Unlike most recreational karting tracks, the Ace Karting track in Ballito is built on tarmac so it’s fast and the karts are set up to test the driving skills to the limit. The visual fun comes from the fact that none of the contenders are professional drivers – they are local movers and shakers who you will probably know quite well. There are a few surprises in store – and plenty of action too!

Each week a chosen contender who has completed the challenge will be interviewed live on air and the top lap time they achieved and their place on the leader board will be revealed to the world.

The fastest contender at the top of the leader board at the end of the series will get to go head to head with The Stig on the race car simulators at the SMD Group showrooms in Ballito to see how they fare in the pro digital track arena.

Tune in to 88.0FM every Friday at 5PM to listen to the interviews and times scored then watch the latest episode of the challenge on www.lifeandstyle.fm shortly

afterwards to see how they did.Our video division now makes live

outside broadcasts even more fun, recording the events for posterity and uploading highlights to our Facebook and YouTube channels for additional exposure.

There are some wonderful events in the pipeline and so much more to look forward to as we continue to build a media brand that is putting Ballito proudly on the international map and adding value to all who enjoy the best of Life & Style.

TAX ON THE WEALTHYShaun Latter

INCREASED Capital Gains Tax makes effective financial planning now even more difficult. Increased from max of 13,3% to 16,4% is a 23% increase this year alone and a total increase of 64% over the past few tax years (Capital Gains Tax was originally

capped at a maximum effective rate of 10% when first introduced)Investments attract Dividends withholding tax, interest income,

net property rental and Capital Gains Tax. Let us not forget Estate Duty at the end of your life which could diminish your hard earned legacy even further.

Investing used to be more a matter of returns/yields regardless of where or how. Now tax planning has become increasingly important, second only to asset allocation/diversification.

Intelligent investment strategies that focus on tax drags can generally increase your net return by 2.5% per annum. The compounding effect of this is enormous and will go a long way towards offsetting the burden of taxation as outlined above.

PEARL SKY

FOLLOWING on what is widely acknowledged as the country’s most successful property launch in history, the developers of

the much acclaimed The Pearls of Umhlanga have acknowledged market demands and announced additional residential opportunities within the final phase of the development, Pearl Sky.

“It is with great excitement that we announce that 41 sea-facing studio apartments, situated from the 26th floor upwards, have been released for sale,” said Sudhir Pragjee, Director of The Pearls of Umhlanga Development.

“The Pearls of Umhlanga is, quite simply, the most sought-after address on the North Coast and property investors are aware that Pearl Sky offers the final opportunity to be part of our iconic development. In light of this we have responded to the unwavering demands of the market, and the additional apartments present the last chance for buyers to be part of The Pearls,” added

Pragjee.Equally exciting for The Pearls of

Umhlanga is that the construction schedule for Pearl Sky is well on track, and has already progressed to the 5th floor level. On completion, Pearl Sky will add a further 420 new residential apartments to the 260 apartments that already exist in The Pearls of Umhlanga development. The shopping centre component of Pearl Sky will open in November this year and the occupation of apartments will begin in the latter half of 2017.

“Based on its beautiful location with direct beach access, unique design and high quality offering, Pearl Sky is a first-class investment opportunity and the level of interest is most satisfying for us as the developers, especially as there is no other property in the region with this value proposition. The record-breaking success of the Pearl Sky launch was largely due to the fact that we were in-tune with market demands, and we are confident that making available the additional apartments will be no different,” concludes Pragjee.

CLASSICS PERFECTED AT FAIRMONT ZIMBALI

THE FAIRMONT ZIMBALI HOTEL recently invited media representatives to a presentation of their new cocktail offering which

they have labelled Classics Perfected.

The invitation offered guests the opportunity to indulge in the finest selection of carefully crafted, signature cocktails inspired by the classics, yet designed for today’s discerning palates.

The new cocktail programme includes brands such as Veuve Clicquot, The Botanist, Rémy Martin and Gentleman Jack so, there’s something to indulge even the most discerning palate in the mix.

Director of Sales and Marketing for the Zimbali Fairmont Hotel, Liezl Meier, and Mixologist Patrick Mavundla joined Dave Charles on the Afternoon Drive on Radio Life & Style 88.0FM the following day to unpack the philosophy behind the new offering. Of course, this included a sampling of what everyone is talking about and the studio rocked…

It was a huge success!

THE POWER OF COMMUNITYJoe Erasmus – Headmaster, Ashton College

THERE a times when certain events

unfold defining moments. Our community experienced such a moment on Wednesday afternoon/evening.

We often criticize social media for obvious reasons, but on this occasion it proved to be literally life-saving and a ‘coming together’ of our community.

The sequence of events is not relevant, but what is relevant was the instantaneous response. It was overwhelming to see the number of people from all areas of the community coming together; teachers, parents, students and members of the North Coast residents. It was very a very emotional experience to witness so many people dispersing in cars, on foot in all different directions in search of our search of our missing student.

The SAPS involvement from the onset was decisive and professional and their expertise in tracking the student’s whereabouts was surreal. Special mention and gratitude goes to W/O Ramacharan and W/O Hlophe who located the youngster timeously. The co-ordinated effort by the SAPS, IPSS, VIVA Security and everyone who came out to assist was a reflection of the true spirit that reigns in our community.

Due to the combined effort of the broadcasting on Life &Style Radio

and Social networking as well as the efforts of our community, we were able to give support and prayer to the Mom and the family. There is nothing more heart-warming than finding a child and re-uniting it with its mother; this will stay with me forever.

This entire experience was indicative of our College ethos, that as a ‘family’ we come together and we don’t give up. It also shows the importance of schools (Principals and teachers) to know their students and the responsibility we have to work with parents to ensure the emotional and physical safety of our youth.

We would like to thank each and every person who came to assist, from near and far. Your genuine care and concern was deeply felt.

Thank you, once again, to the SAPS Umhlali, Viva Security, IPSS and Life&Style Radio and everyone who prayed and/or forwarded a message on social media. We are truly blessed to have you part of our community! YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE!

This was most certainly a defining moment, one that will remain forever!

1.Have a magnetic notepad on your fridge and write down those things you are nearly out of or have already run out of, it's so handy to tear it off and take it shopping with you and I find I rarely go home and say "oh no, I forgot...." This will save you repeat runs to the shops and you can at least try not to go more often than once a week, and thus save money.

2. Buy own brand

basics, most of them are supplied to the retailers

by a well-known brand anyway and are not inferior.

3. Try not to use your

tumble drier. A collapsible clothes drier can be purchased and the cost will be covered within a very short period of time. We find our garage gets warm during the day so that's where I dry the washing if the weather's bad.

4. Repair things as and when they first need it, don't put it off until it's a huge expensive job.

The idea is to encourage you to shop locally and to support the local economy. If you have any ideas that will add value or would like to share information with us, we’d love to hear from you. Email Pam on [email protected] and let us help you in the quest for fairtrade and goodvalue.

EASTER’S SIMNEL CAKE FOR MOTHERING SUNDAY

100g/4oz glace cherries. 225g/8oz butter, softened. 225g/8oz light muscovado sugar.4 large eggs. 225g/8oz self-raising flour. 225g/8oz sultanas. 100g/4oz. 50g/2oz chopped candied peel. 2 lemons, grated zest only 2 tsp ground mixed spice.

FOR THE FILLING AND TOPPING. 450g marzipan. 1 – 2 tbs apricot jam, warmed.

1.Preheat the oven to 150C/280F/Gas 2. Grease and line a 20cm/ 8in cake tin.

2.Cut the cherries into quarters, put in a sieve and rinse under running water. Drain well then dry thoroughly on kitchen paper.

3.Place the cherries in a bowl with the butter, sugar, eggs, self-raising flour, sultanas, currants, candied peel, lemon zest and mixed spice and beat well until thoroughly mixed. Pour half the mixture into the prepared tin.

4.Take one-third of the marzipan and roll it out to a circle the size of the tin and then place on top of the cake mixture. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface.

5.Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 2½ hours, or until well risen, evenly brown and firm to the touch. Cover with aluminium

foil after one hour if the top is browning too quickly. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack.

6.When the cake is cool, brush the top with a little warmed apricot jam and roll out half the remaining marzipan to fit the top. Press firmly on the top and crimp the edges to decorate. Mark a criss-cross pattern on the marzipan with a sharp knife. Form the remaining marzipan into 11 balls (representing the 12 Apostles minus Judas).

7.Brush the marzipan with beaten egg and arrange the marzipan balls around the edge of the cake. Brush the tops of the balls with beaten egg and then carefully place the cake under a hot grill until the top is lightly toasted.

FERMENTED FOODS

FERMENTED foods are an example of a “new” old trend. Having been around for centuries and then forgotten in the era of fast foods,

it seems they are now making a much-needed comeback. Here’s what you need to know:

Fermented foods are packed full of probiotics (higher than you can get in most supplements). A healthy balance of probiotics in the gut has been scientifically proven to be crucial for physical, mental, and even emotional wellbeing.

Fermented foods can also provide you with the following benefits:

VITAMIN K2 – this vitamin regulates where calcium is deposited in the body, prevents calcium deposits in arteries, decreases heart disease risk, and may potentially prevent and treat osteoporosis.B VITAMINS – these are highly involved in energy metabolism, stress management and much more.DIGESTIVE ENZYMES – these aid in the digestion of your foods, decrease bloating and discomfort, and boost the absorption of vitamins and minerals from your diet.IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT – your gut is the first line of defence against pathogens. Healthy gut bacteria are responsible for training and conditioning the strength and effectiveness of your mucosal army. COST-EFFECTIVENESS - you may get up to 100 x more probiotics than from an over-the-counter supplement!

So…what exactly are fermented foods?

SAUERKRAUT AND KIMCHISauerkraut is a German word, which simply means sour white cabbage. In essence, sauerkraut is fermented cabbage. To make sauerkraut, cabbage needs to be allowed to ferment in the presence of salt. The naturally occurring bacteria on cabbage drive this fermentation process. Sauerkraut’s benefits are derived from not only the probiotics, but also the high bioavailability of nutrients.

Kimchi is another type of fermented cabbage, however it is slightly more complex. Kimchi is considered more of a dish than an ingredient in comparison to sauerkraut. This fermented food is a spicy mixture containing cabbage, onions, (and sometimes fish) seasoned with garlic, horseradish, red peppers and ginger.

KEFIRKefir is similar in consistency and look to yoghurt, but vastly different in terms of taste and probiotic content. You can make milk kefir, water kefir, or dairy free coconut milk kefir. Milk kefir is probably the most common. Milk kefir is made by fermenting milk using kefir grains, which are not grains in the traditional sense but rather cultures of bacteria and yeast held together by a naturally-produced polysaccharide. These grains feed on the lactose content of milk. By comparison to yoghurt, kefir contains between 30 – 40 bacterial strains whilst yoghurt contains on average only two.

Milk kefir is similar in taste to sour milk or maas. The longer you leave it to ferment, the more sour the taste. However, there are plenty of ways to disguise the taste and get the benefits. You can combine milk kefir with banana and berries into a delicious smoothie, or with avocado and other ingredients to create a tangy guacamole. A simple Google search will reveal plenty of other tasty recipes to try out.

KOMBUCHAKombucha is a bubbly drink made from fermented black tea. The black tea is fermented through the addition of a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) and sugar. The yeast from the SCOBY feeds on the sugar added to the black tea, leaving behind a slightly alcoholic product, which the bacteria in turn eat. The bacteria from the SCOBY ferment the alcohol made by the yeast, and turn it into acetic acid.

Kombucha tastes like a slightly effervescent, tangy tea drink, and can be flavoured according to your taste buds. Personally, my favourites are Ginger Mate Kombucha and Pomegranate and Green Tea Kombucha.

What you might not know about Kombucha is that it also contains Glucosamines. Glucosamines are fantastic for joint health and function in that they ensure that your joints are lubricated and flexible.

MISOMiso is a soup-like dish, popular in Japan and China. Miso soup is actually quite delicious. Made from soybeans and koji (a culture starter made from beneficial molds, yeast and bacteria), miso needs to be left to ferment for long periods of time. The long fermentation time is necessary because

the soy protein is difficult to digest.

Miso has a sweet and salty flavour that can be used in a wide variety of recipes. Aside from traditional soy miso, you do also get other flavours made with barley and rice. Miso is also considered a complete protein as it contains all essential amino acids

The list of fermented foods does extend well beyond these five, however these are the ones we are more likely to encounter in South Africa. Other fermented foods include yoghurt, poi, tempeh, natto, fermented vegetables and traditional buttermilk.

MY RECOMMENDATIONThe primary benefit when it comes to fermented foods, lies in the probiotic content. When it comes to these healthy bacteria, more is actually better. We should strive to be more like our ancestors and include probiotics from a variety of food sources on a daily basis.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

10 FEEL GOOD FILE 23 March - 5 April 2016 IN P R I N T , O N A I R O N L IN E

I’M trying so hard to be a spiritual being and not be irritated by

unimportant things – yes it’s part of the yoga philosophy, but I totally lose it when I have to stand in a queue.

I just can’t help thinking I could be in the civilised comfort of my own home writing the first chapter of a best seller, reading a few pages of Dickens or having a splendid cup of tea.

The fact that I’ve never done the first, seldom the second and can I suppose do the third anytime sorts me out a bit but I still feel it’s time shaved off my lifespan. An incompetent local pharmacist sent me home with probiotics and pain killers, left out the antibiotics and refused to acknowledge his error.

I did not behave well. It’s an ongoing balancing act to stand up for good service and rights and yet remain

calm and polite at all times. Patanjali’s wonderful yoga sutras

– the success recipe for a good life encourages us to revel in the good that besets others and to assist those that are not getting it so good. Sadly, it’s somewhat contrary to human nature – the only time I ever heard of Britney Spears was when she drove with her child bouncing on her lap and Michael Jackson’s genius talent took a back seat when he dangled his unfortunate offspring off some balcony.

People just lap it up. As for leaving your gated estate to help some kids in Verulam to read – well let’s just change the subject because it’s not going to happen. Sure we have some angels here who do good stuff but it’s not the norm. It’s hard I’ve tried – I used to teach Ballet at St. Mary’s Children’s Home in Rosettenville and Soweto and they messed me around so badly I just couldn’t keep it up.

Oh, and the wonderful four

agreements of Don Miguel Ruiz – be impeccable with your word – wow – that cuts out sarcasm and a lot of humour. Don’t take anything personally – that’s a tough one when someone says “I no longer find you attractive and do not wish to see you again”! Don’t make assumptions – jeez – people’s lives are built on assumption, maybe that’s why they are not doing so well!

Always do your best – that’s hard – we are programmed to conserve energy and are lazy slobs at heart! But I’m still going to try to get it right – yoga postures are promised to strengthen your resolve and build determination so I’m going to hit a warrior posture right now so I can be a better person!

It’s taking a heck of a long time but yogis live long so I’ve got like another 30 years to try make better. So even

with all that

effort I still screw up and fall off and

then I just excuse myself by saying “I’m

not Mother Theresa yet!” Come and join us as we look

forward to a long life on our amazing quest to care more, understand more, try harder, be kinder, keep calm, and hold positive thoughts. Be real, stop worrying, and eliminate the irrelevant, save electricity and honour water – it’s easier in a group!

I’M NOT MOTHER THERESA

LIVING in the Digital Age, we are constantly bombarded with a barrage of information

about the seemingly endless array of options available to us in every area of our lives. And while it is wonderful to have choice, when a simple thing like washing your hair is clouded in confusion, life becomes way too complicated for comfort. By shedding a little light on some of the latest hair-care products, we hope to cut through the fog and highlight the path to simpler and smarter hair solutions.

Durban’s humidity wreaks havoc with even the straightest hair but Redken’s new ‘Frizz Dismiss’, with its exclusive frizz-fighting Humidity Resist Complex, nourishes and protects your hair with a luxuriant blend of Brazilian pracaxi oil and aquatoril, giving it a healthy shine and leaving it silky smooth.

The ‘Kevin Murphy’ range has launched ‘Young Again’, an oil-infused treatment that promises to protect and revitalise hair that is stressed by heat tools and the harsh environment. This product has a tandem shampoo which boasts a complex of 20 amino acids and lotus extracts to strengthen the hair as well

as baobab and mango seed oils to soothe, smooth and rejuvenate tired and tangled tresses.

Joico offers a luxury treatment for dry hair in Revitaluxe-Kpak, which features a patent-pending blend of bio-mimetic peptides, keratin amino acids, jojoba oil, and aloe extract. This product is the result of cutting-edge technology and promises to actively repair, restore, protect and hydrate your hair in an easy-to use application.

Banish that ‘morning-after-the-night-before’ look with ‘After Party’, from TiGi’s ‘Bed Head’ range. This creamy styling product removes stale odours such as smoke, restores definition to roller and iron curls, and leaves your hair as good as it was before the night before!

Redken’s ‘Colour Extend Magnetics’ range cleanses, strengthens and protects colour-treated hair. Its exclusive Interlock Protein Network and Charge Attract complex delivers charged amino-ions that attach to the hair fibres and form a barrier, minimising colour fade and leaving your hair colour vibrant for longer.

Last but definitely not least, Redken have produced something special for the men: ‘Clean

Brew’, a shampoo that is strong enough to wash away the extra grit and grime of a hard day’s work and play without compromising the hair’s natural pH balance of 4.5 – 5.5

However clever the cut or stunning the style, your overall look will always be lacking unless your hair gleams with good health. It is worth doing your homework and paying that little extra to invest in the best available hair-care technology.

Happy styling!

T HEY DID IT ! Our

local long distance

swimming gurus, Mike Oberholzer and Josie de Charmoy took on one of the world’s greatest long distance ocean swims – the Rottnest Challenge, and beat the odds!

Highly regarded worldwide and one of Western Australia’s iconic events, the Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim is a 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach in Perth, to Rottnest Island. Whether competing as a solo, duo or team, the Rottnest Channel Swim is a ‘team’ event with all swimmers surrounded by a support network of paddlers, boat skippers and crew. The event, managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and is Rottnest Island’s biggest day.

The top distance swimmers in the

world acknowledge this event as one of the toughest of its kind and only a relative handful are able to qualify for the event. Those who tackle the almost twenty kilometre swim take on the currents, the notorious stingers and jellyfish, the blazing sun and the enormous sharks that inhabit these parts. Solo competitors swim through cramp, nausea, hypothermia and fatigue without reprieve. Contact with the support teams can only be fleeting – anything more means instant disqualification so effectively you are on your own.

Despite his support paddler losing most of his supplies, Mike Oberholzer swam through four hours of agonising cramps to complete the swim in seven hours and twenty minutes. Josie de Charmoy came in with fellow swimmer and former Dolphin Coast resident, Andrew Stevens, in eight hours, twenty three minutes.

What comes next? Watch this space!

HAVE your house checked by South

Africa’s leading home inspection company with over 30 years of experience operating in all major centres with highly qualified inspectors covered by indemnity insurance.

We are not affiliated with any estate agents or building contractors and are, therefore, completely unbiased in our report and recommendations to you.

When buying a newly built house, you normally assume that the builder has done everything correctly, hasn’t taken any short cuts and has used the correct building materials and methods.

A recent inspection carried out on a new build in an upmarket housing estate on the North Coast revealed many areas where poor building practice and lack of correct management has led to severe structural issues and many months of rebuilding and maintenance. This could have easily been avoided with quality control inspections throughout the building process.

When spending the serious amount of money for a newly built home, you want to be sure everything is done correctly.

Why shouldn’t it be perfect? Why can’t it look like the brochure or the show house?

Inspect-A-Home will make sure that you are made aware of all the defects and how they can be correctly repaired so that you get the dream home you first imagined.

JAGUAR BALLITO LAUNCHES THE NEW XF

THE NEW JAGUAR XF WAS LAUNCHED AT JAGUAR BALLITO LAST WEEK AND LIFE & STYLE WAS HAPPY TO BE THERE TO

ENJOY THE EVENT. The SMD Group is renowned for doing

things in style and the Jag launch was no exception.

Invited guests were treated to a first look at what is undoubtedly a magnificent motorcar.

All-new XF is taut and athletic. Beautifully judged curves bring its assertive character to life. The confident, upright grille and deep power bulge on the bonnet reinforce its intent. A single, elegant arc runs the length of the body, culminating at distinctive, wrap-around LED tail lamps with F-TYPE inspired graphics.

The XF’s sleek, sporty and progressive form delivers advanced aerodynamics, helping the car to move smoothly through the air, saving fuel and reducing emissions. Radiating confidence from every angle, all-new XF has a look that wants to be driven.

NATIONAL WATER WEEK 2016 – SEMBCORP SIZA WATER

KHOSI MATHENJWA

WATER HAS NO SUBSTITUTE. This was the theme for 2016 National Water Week

which ran from 14 – 22 March. The aim was to bring about awareness of the importance of conserving this most valuable resource, which is seriously threatened by pollution and excessive usage.

Sembcorp Siza Water hosted 40 learners at an event that took place at Salt Rock Country Club on - the 17th of March. It began with a welcoming address by one of Sembcorp Siza Water Directors, Dr. Mokoape who enlightened the learners on the current drought and the importance of water in everyday life.

All schools were challenged to enter a water quality “Create a Model Competition” showcasing ways to ensure best water quality. Shakaskraal

Primary School won the competition with their desalination model.

Ritasha Sukdeo, Senior Process Controller at Sembcorp Siza Water

took the kids through an exciting presentation about

water quality where she introduced the “No Pink, No Drink” slogan. Ritasha demonstrated a chlorine tablet test to bring the message home. The DPD No 4 tablet is a test tablet formulated to give a

colour tint in water, its reacts with the chlorine

present water and the “Pink” colour indicates it’s safe to

drink. Learners had fun testing with their test tubes and tablets.

Shyam Misra, Managing Director Sembcorp Siza Water reminded the learners about the importance of saving water and emphasised the need for learners to take the message back with them to their peers and homes.
