Pre-submitted Questions

What’s the difference between semi-annual and 6-month inspection intervals?

2/10/2016

13

Answer

For testing that is required on a semi-annual basis, we require that the testing be completed every 6 months.

Pre-submitted Questions

Is the Fire Safety Evaluation System (FSES) still available to solve regulatory problems?

2/10/2016

14

Answer

Yes, however the SFM will no longer provide the FSES.

Each facility will need to hire someone certified in FSES and provide an inspection report and FSES paperwork to the Des Moines Office for approval.

** Can’t be used in lieu of sprinkler requirements.

Pre-submitted Questions

How long does a fire alarm monitoring company have to receive a trouble signal from phone line disconnect?

2/10/2016

15

Answer

When placed in trouble (phone line disconnect), the automatic dialer shall notify all panels of the system (within the facility) and the monitoring company within 4 minutes. NFPA 72, 99 edition, Table 7-2.2 (16b).

Pre-submitted Questions

Please explain the power strip guidance in CMS S&C Letter 14-46

2/10/2016

16

Answer

CMS is permitting a categorical waiver to allow for the use of power strips in existing and new health care facility patient care areas/rooms, if the provider/supplier complies with all applicable 2012 NFPA 99 power strip requirements and with all other 1999 NFPA 99 and 2000 LSC electrical system and equipment provisions.

o Resident rooms in long-term care or other residential care facilities that do not use line-operated electrical appliances for diagnostic, therapeutic, or monitoring purposes are not subject to the more restrictive NFPA 99 requirements regarding the use of power strips in patient care areas/rooms. Resident rooms using line-operated patient-care-related electrical equipment in the patient care vicinity must comply with the NFPA 99 power strip requirement and may elect to utilize this categorical waiver.

Answer

In Summary:

The categorical waiver only applies to non-long term care facilities and residential care facilities (unless those facilities provide life support services & they need to use surge strips for additional outlets)

The SFM Surge Protector Policy can be found on our website under the Fire Prevention page.
