Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 3

Welcome to the first ever issue of Life. Paper. Scrapbook. I am so delighted to be sharing this little magazine with you all. It has been a labour of love to get this first one together and I will admit that it has been a bit of a learning curb but we are very pleased with the finished result and hope you will be too. When I first decided to put LPS together I wanted to share my passion for paper crafts and had a vision to create a place where people could share their work and get inspiration from other designers. I was delighted at the response to the submission call and reassured that many other people shared that vision for the magazine with me. In our first issue we are introducing our design team, meeting three Australian designers, talking about some of our favourite products and of course sharing inspiration in our gallery pages. I hope you enjoy this first issue and find inspiration within the pages. Thank you so much for joining us on this journey.

We all have our favourite products that we love to use and each month our Design Team will be sharing some of the current products that are taking a star spot on their scrap desks at the moment.

Flair ButtonsCre8tive Cre8tionsYou’ve gotta love flair and Cre8tive Cre8tions flair has a great variety “They have so many gorgeous buttons in all imaginable prints and colors. A flair button adds some extra touch to your project as well.” - Danielle, DT

Navy Triangle WahshiFreckled Fawn

“Geometric shapes, especially triangles are super hot right now and washi is one of my favourite ways to add little touches of trendy patterns to

my layouts” - Manda, Editor

Mister HueysStudio CalicoMists are a must have on your craft desk whether you are using them to spritz your page, use a mask or splat onto your page. Mister Hueys are a very good choice with a strong pigment and bright colour. “Spray ink can make mist, splats, recolour chipboard/cardstock and get some great effects with masking, very versatile stuff!” - Louise, DT

Page 7: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 7

Artisan ChipboardPink Paislee

“I absolutely adore Pink Paislee Artisan Chipboards. They come in varying shapes and sizes and the best

part is that you can alter them with inks or mists to suit your projects. Sometimes i like to leave them in

its raw white colour too.” - Jeanette, DT

Here & There Wood Veneer Cats

Studio Calico“I love wood veneer because it is so easy

to alter in a number of ways - inking, embossing, covering in washi or using them

as a mask. As a self confessed Cat Lady I had no choice than to grab these as soon

as they were released!” - Manda, Editor. (They also have dogs for all the canine

lovers out there.)

Enamel DotsMy Minds EyeThese are a favourite of a lot of people at the moment and come in many different colours, most of the new MME collections have them. “I love how they add a small splash of color and some dimension to my projects. Those little dots find their way onto almost everything I create these days.” - Becki, DT

Do you have a favourite technique?Fave technique would be machine stitching.

Who inspires you?I’m inspired by Ali Edwards’ story telling and the simple beauty of Anna-Maria Wolniak’s work (who I’ve only recently discovered)

Caz HancockLPS Design Team - New Zealandwww.cazhancock.com

Describe your style?I would say my style is layered, but still keeping it clean and simple and mostly girly :)

What are 5 of yout favourite things to use on a layout? My most used and favourite things are: wood veneer, flair badges, washi tape, enamel dots the fifth one changes a lot but right now it is binder clips

Do you have a favourite technique? Layers, layers, layers, funnily enough this was something I could not pull off, then I took a class at Studio Calico and it has changed the way I scrap forever!

Who are you inspired by? Oh so many people, where to start but I love Dear Lizzy and Amy Tangerine so much, they both have such a clean style like me, even though I layer I still think I have clean lines.

Originally from the UK, Caz moved to a small town in New Zealand where she lives with her hubby and her beautiful daughter. She discovered scrapbooking by accident when she wanted to make a paper gift for her husband for their first anniversary and hasn’t looked back since.

Leanne AllinsonLPS Design Team - Australiawww.leanneallinson.blogspot.com

How would you describe your style? My style would be best described as using clusters in white space. I also predominately scrap in the A4 size or 8.5in x 11in. Lately white cardstock has become my friend and I love teaming it up with beautiful colours.

What are 5 favourite things to use on a layout? My most favourite things are: 1 - white space, 2 - mist/paint splatter, 3 - bright, fresh colours, 4 - gorgeous embellishments that subliminally relate to the story I’m scrapping, and 5 - journaling.

Do you have a favourite technique? My favourite technique would be to use layers. Lots and lots of them. :) I will often come back to a layout after I “feel” like it is finished and tuck in some extra pieces of patterned paper between and below base papers.

Who are you inspired by?I am inspired by so many wonderful scrappers. Maggie Holmes, Tina Walker, Melissa Stinson and my dear Aussie friends Kim Jefress, Gail Lindner, Kerryn Lawson & Melinda Spinks. However, I also love visiting pinterest for inspiration!!

Page 16: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

16 Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

How would you describe your style?I would describe my scrapbooking style as soft, clean and streamlined. I love fussy cutting, clustering elements on my pages and finding a balance in composition and style. But that does not mean I confine myself to what I love best. Occasionally, you will see pages where I try out new mediums and techniques while staying true to my style.

5 favourite things to use on a layout?Buttons. Flowers. Brads. Washi Tapes. Tags.

Jeanette LeeLPS Design Team - Singaporewww.nettescraps.blogspot.com

Living in the exciting city of Singapore, Jeanette works as a teacher. Starting out by doing some scrapbooking as presents for friends, it soon grew into a full time hobby and as a creative escape from work.

Do you have a favourite technique? That’s a tough one. I will narrow it down to punching and misting. That is probably why I have tons of mists and punches that I can’t get rid of. They are used in every layout I make.

Who are you inspired by?Stephanie Howell. Her layouts are clean and simple and yet they speak volumes about the stories behind the photos. I am always inspired to push myself to document about my stories. Oh! and her blog entries always relate to my heart, in one way or another.

Living in a small town in Idaho, USA, Becki is a SAHM to three wonderful children. When she was given an assignment in home economics in 1996 she could never have known that it would lead to a hobby that would become her passion.

How would you describe your style?I define my style as colourful, bold, clean and classic

5 favourite things to use on a layout?Patterned paper - I’m a huge patterned paper addict. I always use several different patterns on each layout, wood veneer, letter stickers (Thickers are another addiction of mine) washi tape and enamel dots.

Do you have a favourite technique?Layering, I love stacking elements on my pages and tucking little bits into the layers for lots of texture and dimension.

Who are you inspired by?That’s a hard question. There are so many people. I’m probably most inspired by my kids, my favorite pages come from an idea I got from them. As far as scrapbookers that I’m inspired by, I adore Jen Gallacher’s work as well as Shimelle Laine’s design principles. Elizabeth Kartchner is also a favorite of mine her Dear Lizzy collection is a must for me.

Danielle De KoninkLPS Design Team - Netherlands

www.picsandcheesecake.blogspot.nl

Danielle lives in The Hague in The Netherlands where she works in

the insurance industry. She started scrapbooking in 2004 when she was on a trip to the USA, at the time scrapbooking

was not popular in her country so she had to get creative with her supplies.

How would you describe your style? To describe my style...I think I have 2 styles actually and it’s a little depending on the products I use what style it is going to be. One is clean & simple with a good use of embellishments. The other is a more artsy style, with a good use of stamps in black. Both of my styles include layering and lots of handstitching.

5 of your favourite things to use on a layout? Layering, handstitching, India ink, background stamps and vellum.

Do you have a favourite technique? Not just one, there are a couple of techniques you’ll find on almost every layout: layering, stitches and something including ink.

Who are you inspired by?I don’t get inspired by one particular person. I pick up ideas everywhere, also outside of scrapbooking. Mostly I get inspired by the photos and products I have on hand and they lead me into a design.

Me and my BFF

Michelle StokesLPS Design - Australiawww.mandalikadesigns.blogspot.com.au

Michelle lives with her family in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. She works part time so she can spend lots of time with her little girl and tries to get creative as much as possible. Although she has been scrapping for at least seven years, the last three years she has focused on Project Life.

How would you describe your style? My style of traditional scrapping is generally very sim-ple, I tend to search for lots of ideas/ sketches and go with the flow from what I have liked. With Project Life I try to be as creative as I can. I treat each pocket like a mini layout showcasing photos and products used.

5 favourite things to use on a layout?Washi tape - I am addicted, flair, kraft or light coloured Card-stock as the base. I like to stick to the basics - journalling card/sticker/ spot of some sort and thickers... LOVE them and have a massive collection!

Do you have a favourite technique?I like trying different techniques when ever I can, but I don’t really have a favourite as yet. I’m a pretty basic scrapper and prefer the picture and/or journalling to tell the story and stand out more than the products them-selves.

Who are you inspired by?I find inspiration in a lot of places. Many favourites on my go to list but more for Project life than traditional layouts.

5 favourite things to use on a layout?White thread, bakers twine, doilies, paint and I have a thing for foam alpha thickers.

Manda MooreLPS Design Team/Creative Director - Australiawww.mandalikadesigns.blogspot.com.au

Starting out by making cards for friends, Manda’s love of pretty paper grew and it was inevitable that she would end up scrapbooking. It is a passion that she hopes to turn into a career. She lives in inner city Melbourne with her precious kitty, Harry.

How would you describe your style?I would say my style is eclectic, I always want to try new techniques and styles. I think generally I have a very clean style but I do like to get messy sometimes.

5 favourite things to use on a layout?I love wood veneer, I am not sure what I will do when it goes out of fashion. My other favourites are washi, mists, thickers (I couldn’t scrap without them!) and lately I have been right into hand stitching.

Do you have a favourite technique? At the moment I would have to say hand stitching using embroidery floss. I also like to splat mists on pretty much every layout I do.

Who are you inspired by?So many people different people but I would have to say my scrappy idol is Amy Tangerine - I love her style, the way she uses colour and of course her stitching. I am also inspired by the way she has turned her hobby into a career.

CHA is one of the highlights on the scrapbook industry’s calendar and it is a time of excitement for us diehard scrapbookers because we get to see all the fabulous new products soon to be released (not soon enough!) and what the coming trends will be for the next 6 months. Here the design team have selected some highlights of their favourite new lines and products that we loved from the Winter CHA.

About A Boy Washi Tape Echo ParkThis washi was on Leanne’s most wanted list. It is always great to see a boy orientated line and this one is eye catching with bright, colourful patterns and geometric shapes. Perfect for all the men in your life.

Project Life: Honey Core KitBecky HigginsProject Life seems to have become the must do project this year and while there are lots of bits and pieces you can purchase to use, there is no arguing that the easiest way is using one of the amazing core kits. A number of different kits have been released but one of the most fun is The Honey Edition which Michelle loves “because of the bright colours and the cute cameras.”

Page 31: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 31

You & Me Journaling TagsElle’s StudioElle’s Studio has always been a great place to pick up fabulous embellishments, journal cards and stamps. The new You & Me collection is one of Lucia’s all time favourites from Elle’s.

Maggie HolmesCollectionCrate PaperThis was one of the most talked about lines when it was previewed and the DT was just as in love as everyone else. Becki and I liked it so much we pretty much ordered the whole collection, and let’s face it there are some fabulous new items included that will set any shabby chic lover’s heart aflutter - stitched fabric polaroid frames, fabulous signature flower clips, glittery thickers and the much anticipated clip board mini album.

Lucky Charm Collection

Dear Lizzy/American CraftsDear Lizzy always brings us beautiful whimsical lines and this one featuring

various charm bracelet icons is no exception. This was another favourite in

the blogosphere and Louise is a huge fan of this line “Love the navy colour palette

and the horses!”

Yes Please Embroidary Stencil KitAmy Tangerine/American CraftsAmy’s lines are always a lot of fun so we expected no less of the new Yes, Please collection, what we weren’t expecting was the embroidary stencil kits. Hand stitching is very popular right now but it takes a bit of time and patience to perfect and can be fiddly but worry no more because Amy T has taken all the hassle out of it with this fab kit. There is also an alphabet one too and Caz adores them because it is so easy to do and the stitching adds a nice touch to the page.

So NotedCarta BellaAs you have probably realised shabby chic is still a popular choice and this delightful collection from Carta Bella has so many pretty colours and patterns. Jeanette is a fan of the elements sheet which has lots of vintage emphemera style pieces.

Park BenchFancy Pants

Another pick from Danielle is this pretty collection from Fancy Pants. It has a vintage

feel but with a fresh twist of colour. The collection has lots of goodies including flair,

tags, pattered envelopes, felt flowers and lots of other fun bits and pieces.

Alphabean StickersJillibean SoupYou can never have too many alphas and Jillibean has added five new colours to their Alphabean line including the rather elusive navy, kraft, black, white and this beautiful orange. Leanne is loving that they are now a little bit taller and skinner. These are great for smaller title work or your Project Life album.

Hipster CollectionBasic GreyThis new collection from Basic Grey is one of Louise’s picks and it is a bit of a blast from the past with cool retro prints, a muted 60’s colour palette and some groovy geometric shapes. It is a great mix of patterns including some florals which makes it very versatile and a whole lot of fun.

Composition & ColorMini Bags

Allison Kreft/Webster’s PagesOne of my favourite collections was Allison Kreft’s Color and Composition for Webster’s Pages, I was

a huge fan of Hambly and was delighted with her collections last year and this one is just as great.

I really love the mini bags because of their versatality. Perfect for layering, hiding journal cards and even for

keeping bits and pieces together for Project Life.

hEach month on the LPS Blog we run two challenges - a sketch and a colour. Each challenge has a prize which is drawn randomly and the top three are featured on our blog. We had a wonderful response to our January Sketch and we thought we would share three of our favourite layouts with you. Why not try the sketch out yourself?

This layout really caught our eye because of it’s bright colour palette (and the adorable photos). Chantelle added pops of colour to the white space using mist droplets and some sparkles.

HappyBy Julie Hollis - USAwww.juleshollis.com

We loved the subject of this layout so much and also the lovely neutral tones. The beautiful sewing machine and camera wood veneer was something we wanted the second we saw it, Julie told us that she actually saw them in an online store as part of jewellry so she messaged the owner to see if they would do a custom order for the pieces by themselves. Brilliant!Materials: Cardstock - American Crafts. Paper - Tim & Beck, American Crafts, Sassafras. Embellishments - Dear Lizzy, Studio Calico, twine, button. Stamp - Hero Arts. Felicity’s work is just stunning, a beautiful mix of stylish sophistication and mixed

media. She takes a plain white palette and adds splashes of

colour and groups of pretty embellishments to make her

pages a visual treat of textures and little details.

Where do you live? In a mining town called Emerald in Central Queensland Australia.

How long have you been scrapbooking? It feels like 50 years, only problem is I am not that old, lol... Nah, realistically, 6 years, but I really got into after my eldest son’s birth. Sheesh - that’s almost 4 years ago!! Time flies when you’re having fun!!

Do you have a favourite technique? Just one favourite...hold one let me make a cuppa and come back to you on that!

Who are you inspired by?My boys! Seriously that make my world go round. Nothing better than thinking about colour combinations and page compositions to the sound of laughter as Thomas the Tank runs off the train track.

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 41

Tell us a bit about your life in general? We are a loud, crazy, anything goes family of 4! Brae is soon to be 4 years and informs me he is having a rocket birthday cake! Piper is 2 and is a bit like a twitter feed and with him I can’t get away with anything! My Hubby is a farmer which can sometimes leave me with my routine sitting on the window sill aka a half baked cake on the bench because he urgently needs to me in the paddock or an unplanned day to myself because there is no way those little boys are leaving Daddy on the tractor by himself. So that means I forget the house work and become creative!

What makes you happy?I am always a happy kind a girl. My hubby’s nickname is Smiley, so that might explain it!! But seriously, I love my studio, window shopping, shoes, coffee shops, dining out, flowers from my garden that my precious little men have picked for me... all those mummy, girlie things!!

Beach Cricket (left)

We loved Mel’s work as soon as we saw it with it’s clean lines, bright colours and little details such as machine stitching, hand cut shapes and ink. We asked the Queensland Designer to answer a couple of questions about scrapbooking and life in general.

Where do you live? I live in Bundaberg in QLD, Australia. I moved to this sunny town 12 months ago, for the sun and the lifestyle. Originally from Ballarat in Victoria, my family and I felt that we were being penned in by the cold weather. I love the outdoor lifestyle and have recently bought a house and am having a pool dug in the backyard as I speak.

How long have you been scrapbooking?I have been scrapbooking on and off since 2004. in this time there have been a couple of occasions where I took 12 months or so off! One was during the pregnancy of my son, and the other time was when I was studying at Uni for a year for my Graduate Diploma.

Page 44: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

44 Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

We asked Mel to do a layout based on our February Sketch. We love the bright colours and the way she has interpreted the circles with both paper and embellishments giving the layout lots of texture.

Page 45: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. 45

Who are you inspired by?I have always been inspired by Heidi Swapp and Celine Navarro. Lately I have fallen in love with Lisa Truesdell’s work and Leena Loh’s project life pages.

What are your 5 favourite things to use on a layout?Ink splatters, hand/die cut shapes, labels, enamel dots, stitching.

Do you have a favourite technique?I love adding little details with stamping.

Tell us a bit about your life in general? I live in a big house with my husband and 2 kids (Lilly is 9 and Tobey is 7), and my husband’s parents. Although this situation can be trying at times, it enables me to focus on some creative time because there is always someo ne at home to help out with the chores and playing with the kids! I recently opened a little store on my blog selling boutique scrapbooking supplies aimed at project lifers. This is really an excuse just to buy myself cute things!

What makes you happy?Being out with my family, enjoying the sunshine and then coming home to scrapbook the memories.

By Stéphanie Grenouillat - Francewww.monbricascrap.over-blog.comStephanie tells us a bit about how she pulled her layout together: “I often use white background, it’s allows to play with ink and “white space”. I began to make a big spash with my glimmer. To build my layout, i stack some papers under my photo and i’m playing with shapes cutting with my cuttlebug.I added thread to create some texture.

Hello CutieBy Sanna Lippert - Austriawww.papierstau.atFor this layout Sanna used the photo and the Amy Tangerine sticker as a starting point “It all started from these two things. I wanted to enhance the photo, so I used some stencils/masks to do that and then added some doodling and splodges of spray ink all around. I wanted to keep the page cute, so I used lots of little embellishments and details”

Grandma’s ReadersBy Malika Kelly - USAwww.malikakelly.blogspot.comTriangles are hot right now and Malika used them for the base of this layout. “I hand cut some triangles out of patterned paper to make a mat for my pictures. I love that the yellow paper clip marker has a triangular shape as well.”

Lovely MemoriesSandy Ang - Singaporewww.angsandy.blogspot.com

Often when we choose photos for a layout we choose ones with the subject looking straight at the camera but Sandy tells us that “it can be just as effective when designing pages to use those shots where the subject is looking off-camera. Here I did a close-crop with the photos so her downward gaze directs your attention down to the title block and the extensive journalling.”

Use them! The title, clear tape, corrugated frame and a corner button were in my stash for may be 2 years and finally have a new home on this page.”

IKoulumatkallaBy Linda Iswariah - Finland/UKwww.lintsi.wordpress.comThis layout caught our eye because of the fun, unusual photo subject. YouBy Einat Kessler - Israelwww.scrapinit.blogspot.co.ilEinat has lots of different textures and layers that drawn in your attention. One of her tips for giving more texture to a page is to take a wet teabag and drip onto the page, it also adds a lovely tea stain to the page. Not Yet Grown UpNatalie Stewart - Australiawww.rangamumma.blogspot.com.auEver make a mistake when making a page? Natalie tells us to keep working on it “Some of the techniques I used on this layout came about quite by accident. For example, to create the ink smudges, I first accidentally dropped my ink pad. Rather than throw it all away, I ran with it and dropped the ink pad a few more times. I also gave it a few swipes in random places around the edge of the LO. When stamping the date, I made a mistake and tried to “smudge” it out with more ink. I like how it all adds to the grungy feel of the LO.”

Tearing adds such a great texture and look to pages but it can be hard to get just right, Ruth tells us how: “The trick is to hold one piece of paper still and tear the other one up and away from it, so that there is a consistent edge, hold close to the point where the tear is and go slowly, moving your hands down the paper as you go to maintain full control of where it is going.”

Petra is a member of Becky Higgin’s Project

Life Creative Team and it is no wonder, her

weekly spreads are a wonderful hybrid mix

showing us all how you can use a traditional core

kit and add somedigital elements. Inspiring us all

to tell our own stories, our own way.

Where do you live? Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

How long have you been scrapbooking? Only about 6-7 years

Do you do traditional scrapbooking as well as PL? Not since I discovered Project Life. Who are you inspired by? Just one? I would say Ali Edwards & Cathy Zielske at the top of my list.

Whare are five of your favourite things to add to your PL pages? Stamps, Wood Veneers, Brads, Tags & all sorts of digital goodness.

Page 82: Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

82 Life. Paper. Scrapbook.

Do you have a favourite technique? I really just love my hybrid mix of digital overlays, journalling and brushes

mixed with some ‘real’ embellies, tags stick ons. Often when you see my pages in a photo it is hard to distinguish what is real and what is not.

Tell us a bit about your life in general?

Mum to 3 precious kiddies, Wife to a wonderful man, CFO for a technology company and Project Lifer to use up all the spare time I don’t have.

What makes you happy? Pretty much everything in the last question!

Fab

FOU

R With all the new collections that were released at CHA one theme that kept coming up was “Travel” and with Summer Holidays just over (or soon to start in the Northern Hemisphere) it is the perfect time to get

those holiday snaps together and get scrappy.

1-Travel GirlOctober Afternoon

OA brings us another wonderful retro collection with Travel Girl. Lots of

vibrant patterns and their signature characters, this collection includes all the bits and pieces we have come to

love from OA including Tidbits, Chip ‘n’ Stick, Mini Market Alphas and some

great new stamps.

2-Urban TravelerSimple Stories Bold, vivid colours and classic travel icons such as areoplanes, travel labels and NYC subway style lettering this is a really fun collection that would be perfect for recording a trip to the big city. The great thing about this line is that the colour palette and bold shapes would work great for boy pages.

4 -Down By The ShoreFancy Pants Designs Anchors are going to be huge this season and there are plenty in the new collection from FP. Bright, happy and a whole lot of fun this one is perfect for those seaside getaways. Some fun items in this collection are patterned photo frames, envelopes, rub ons and book bands.

3-Far & AwayTeresa Collins Designs

This new collection has a colour palette inspired by airmail letters and includes some great vintage inspired pieces including vintage

map and letter papers, file folders, garlands and the much loved

enamel dots.

Molly tells us “I immediately fell in love with the city of New Orleans as soon as we got there.

I’ve never been to such a fun and colorful city. The pictures I took (over 300) while we were

there are some of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken. I wanted to make a mini-album to document our amazing trip. My goal with

this project was to let the photos shine & tell the story. I wanted the embellishments to

enhance the photos, not hide or overshadow them. I used photos for my front & back covers instead of patterned paper. I love this technique

because it’s like a bonus page and a peek at what’s inside. I love what I’ve created. It brings

me right back to our trip. I love that I’ll have this little book forever.

We really loved that Molly used pictures for the base of most of her

pages and added embellishments straight onto the photo.

Stephanie’s says: “I love mini albums... a lot. They are probably my favorite thing to make.I made this sweet little album for the weekly challenge over at Studio Calico, the challenge was to use their printables to create something. As soon as i saw the heart card in the front row printable set I knew I wanted to use it for some type of mini and after some thought, I decided to write little love letters to my family and document them in this book. This came together so easily and I really loved having just a few products to work.”
