Dear Tom and Ray:Our 2001 Subaru Forester (93,000 miles,

He also may have been suggestingthat this failure can cause attendant enginedamage. I am of the “if it ain’t broke, donfixit” school, especially on car repairs that willrun several hundred dollars. Predictably, mywife took the mechanic’s word as gospel. What do you think? -- Terry

RAY: I think if your wife always takes themechanic’s word as gospel, it’s probablybecause you’ve given her plenty of reasonsto do so, Terry. And you’re about to give herone more.

TOM: Here’s the story. There are twotypes of engines: interference engines andnon-interference engines.

RAY: An interference engine is an enginewhose pistons and valves share the samespace inside the cylinders, but at differenttimes. So when the valves are open, the pis-ton is down and out of the way. And whenthe piston comes up, the valves are closedand out of the way. This is an efficient use ofspace, and gives the engine more power andbetter mileage.

RAY: And guess what, Terry? Your ’01Forester has an interference engine.Congratulations!

TOM: So if you opt for the “if it ain’tbroke, don’t fix it” approach in this case, when it IS broke, it could cost you $25,000for a new car instead of $400 for a timingbelt.

RAY: And statistically speaking, based on

the age and mileage of your car, your timingbelt is ready to break any day now.

TOM: If your car happened to have a non-interference engine (where the pistons andvalves don’t cross over into each other’sspace), a broken timing belt would not besuch a disaster. Your engine simply wouldstop running, and would leave you stranded.Although I’m not sure that would be popularwith your wife, either.

RAY: But in this case, because of the typeof engine you have (and many other carshave interference engines, too), it’s actuallya much more urgent matter. In fact, we rec-ommend that you not only change the timingbelt now, but also change the timing-belt ten-sioner and the water pump, because if eitherof those fails, it could break the timing belt, with the same disastrous results.

TOM: So that’s a lot of stuff that “ain’tbroke” that you’re going to be fixing, Terry. But it’s the wise -- and the cheaper -- thing todo in this case.

There’s something wonderfully sweet about a wife cutting a hus-band’s hair, and Bruce Guernsey, who lives in Illinois and Maine, cap-tures it beautifully in this poem.

FOR MY WIFE CUTTING MY HAIRYou move around me expertly like the good, round

Italian barber I went to in Florence, years before we met, his scissorsa razor he sharpened on a belt.

But at first when you were learning, I fearedfor my neck, saw my ears like sliced fruit

on the newspapered floor. Taking us back in time, you cleverly clipped my head in a flat-top.

The years in between were styles no one had ever seen,or should see again: when the wind rose

half my hair floated off in feathers, the other half bristling, brief as a brush.

In the chair, almost asleep, I hear the brightscissors dancing. Hear you hum, full-breasted as Aida,

carefully trimming the white from my temples,so no one, not even I, will know.

THE WEIGHT

IS OVER!

“I tried different diets and exercise but never saw

results. After witnessing the success a family

member had with the LAP-BAND, I spent time

researching and understanding the impact it

could have on my life. After only 24 hours in the hospital,

I was back home, ready to begin making the right choices.

Now I run and lift weights and simple tasks are not as taxing

as they used to be – I have even hiked Harney Peak.”

Erick Hoffman lost 90

pounds in one year
