GRAND PRAIRIE— The state of Texasrecently approved the Grand Prairie WaterConservation Plan as approved by theGrand Prairie City Council in April. Theplan, required by law, outlines year-roundwater conservation efforts for residents andbusinesses. These requirements are inplace regardless of whether drought condi-tions exist or not. Should a drought occur, stricter requirements could be enacted.

Highlights of the plan call for:Watering of lawns after 6 p.m. andbefore 10 a.m. (and conversely, don’t waterfrom 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) fromApril 1 to Oct.31. If Mother Nature is watering, be itdrizzle, rain, hail, snow or ice, turn sprin-klers off. Adjust sprinklers to water thelawn, not the concrete, stone, brick or otherimpervious surface. Fix all broken ormissing sprinkler heads. Maintain a sprin-

kler system so that it does not waste water. For systems installed after June 1, 2009,rain, wind, freeze sensors must be installed.

The ordinance allows watering outside theparameters above for 30 days for the pur-pose of: Establishing hydromulch, grasssod or grass seed; Dust control of a sportfield; Maintenance, repair or testing ofan irrigation system; Watering by use of ahand-held or soaker hose

Thorough, but infrequent watering (nomore than every five days) develops deeperroots and plants that are healthier and moredrought tolerant. Persons or companieswho refuse to comply with the ordinanceface fines up to $2,000. For more informa-tion, contact the City of Grand PrairieWater Utilities at 972-237-8377.
