These are some of the things that people say about the future. Finish the

sentences.

1. In the future we will not read books because ...............

2. In the future children will not go to school because ...............

3. In the future there will be no teachers because ...............

Many people say that in the future

we will not use books and libraries

because we will get all our

information from computers.

Perhaps one day children will not

go to school. The students will

learn at home, so there will be no

teachers, no uniforms and no

playgrounds! Do you think this will

happen? What do you think about

it?

Look at the two pictures and find three differences between the two pictures.

Speak about them.

Look at the picture on the right.

This is how many classrooms in Sri

Lanka look today. What can you see

in the classroom?

2. What date is there on the newspaper?

3. On what page does the news item appear?

4. Is the article about a school, a hospital or a hotel?

The new “Galaxy” hospital will be opened on 20th May this

year. This will be a great advance in medicine. Everybody is

excited to see how it will work. There will be no people working

in the hospital. Machines and robots will do everything for you.

Dr. Roy Pieris explains what to do:

computer. Type in your name and health

insurance number. The computer will

give you a print out of your medical

history.

c. Go to room number six now and type in

your name and health insurance number

again. Then the robot dispenser will give

your medicine.

d. Insert your health insurance PIN card

and when the door opens enter room

number two.

e. In room number four feed your medical

history sheet into the robot doctor and

tell him briefly about your illness. The

robot doctor will tell you where you must

go by flashing a number.

f. Here a specialist robot doctor will scan

you and prescribe medicine.

Say the rhyme

1

Say the rhyme and do the actions!

I can help you everywhere,

Bedroom, kitchen, I don’t care.

Sweep the floor or paint the door,

Iron your clothes or even more.

Wash the dishes as you wish,

Cook some curry, fry a fish.

Sew a shirt or knit a hat,

Throw a ball or use a bat.

Make your tea or bake some peas,

I can do it all with ease.

I can work for hours and hours,

Without stopping. I have powers.

All day long I do my best,

And you can sit and have a rest.

People say that in the future everyone will have robots to do the work at

home. Perhaps they will be like Roland the Robot in this rhyme …

How many things can this robot do? Read the rhyme and make a list.

work you want. I have six robot

legs and two robot arms. I move

I am Mr Clean. I have six hands

So many problems! Can you think of some solutions to make things better on

Planet Earth?

Find the problems mentioned in the article

Will we go to

another planet

one day?

Every year there are

more and more people

on Planet Earth. Every

year we use more and

more oil and other fuel.

Every year the air

becomes more and more

polluted. People think

that the temperature of

the Earth is going up and

up, and one day

perhaps the ice at the

North and South Poles

will melt! Then there will

be big trouble. The sea

will rise and many places

will be under water.

Some people think that

we should find a new

planet to live on. Other

people hope that we will

make things better on

THIS planet.

This story happens in the future! The people from the different planets are

holding an inter-planetary conference to discuss the problems their planets are

facing and the solutions to those problems.

A. I am from planet Koffo. On my planet there is no clean air to breathe, so we buy bags of

air from other planets.

B. I come from planet Pleno. The population on our planet is about 250,000 million.

There is no place for us to grow our food. So we buy food from other planets. We want

to find a new planet to live on.

C. I live in planet Caldo. Our planet is very hot, so we all live in big refrigerators.

D. My planet’s name is Fesso. On our planet robots do all the work and computers do all

the thinking. Our problem is we do not have anything to do, and we are now all very

bored!

Tell your friends the 3 ideas that you chose. Are they the same or different?

Do you agree or disagree?

Ruwan is writing an article for the school newspaper, but he hasn’t finished it.

Look at his notes and decide which three ideas are the best for the article.

What must we do in the future?

Flying cars and underwater cities are very interesting, but

perhaps other things are more important.

There are many problems in our world today. Here are

some problems we must solve very soon.

We must protect the natural world. We mustn’t cut down

all the forests. We need them and the animals need them!

We must grow enough food for everybody in the world.

People must try to be friends with people from other

places.

We must find a clean way of travelling.

No more oil and petrol! Perhaps we can

have electric cars.

We must keep our rivers and lakes

clean. Everybody needs clean

water to drink.

Cover the story and only look at the pictures. Try to tell the story again to your

friends. You can use your own words.

One day, Roy, Nizar, Ruwan, Kusum, Amali,

Meena, Pancha, Kandu and Windy Wheeler

went on a trip to the forest.

On the way, they stopped by a river and had a

nice meal.

Then they went into the forest. Kandu went first

and all the others followed him.

They heard birds singing and monkeys

chattering. They were all very happy.

Then they saw a herd of elephants.

The elephants all lifted their trunks and called to

Kandu. “Come and join us”.

Kandu looked at his friends. “I must go,” he said.

“I must join them”. And slowly and sadly he

walked into the forest to join his elephant

friends.

Then came a group of monkeys. The monkeys

hopped from tree to tree and called Pancha to

join them. Pancha slowly and sadly went to join

them.

Roy and his friends were very sad to leave Pancha

and Kandu, but Roy said “It’s sad, but the time

has come. Don’t worry, the forest is the place for

Kandu and Pancha to live in the future. It’s their

natural home, and we must protect it”.

“Goodbye. Goodbye.”

said Kandu and Pancha.

“Goodbye,” said the children. “Thank you for being

our friends for all these years,” they said.

“We won’t forget you!”
