To be a steward is to be one who cares for, tends to, and cultivates. Reflecting on stewardship requires us to ask ourselves how we are caring for the gifts God has given us: starting with the gift of life itself. How do we use our energy? How do we allocate our time? Are we helping one another to flourish and thrive? Are we responding to the gift God has given us in Christ? Are we using the re- sources God has given us in ways that will bring light and life to those around us? Or are we intent on illuminating the inside of a basket, as Jesus so comically puts it in Mark 4: 34? By limiting our thoughts about stewardship to financial resources and planning the annual budget, we have trivialized the concept. Rather than an interruption to the regularly scheduled programming, the concept of stewardship aids us in discerning how we can best respond to God’s call in our daily lives. It is integral to our day to day lives as Christians. It is also integral to the life of Faith Immanuel Presbyterian Church. How do we continue to do the work of the Church in a world that has so quickly and per- manently changed? How will Faith Immanuel adapt to the ever changing world of the 21st Century? We begin by thinking about our role as stewards of the good news of Christ’s love for all the world. This month we will focus on stewardship in worship. And yes, we will make pledges and plan the annual budget, but this stewardship month will be about a lot more than that. As we budget, we will seek to keep our eyes focused on why this church community means so much to us. We will cultivate gratitude for God’s abundance and renew our sense of purpose as stewards of the gospel of Christ. Yours in Christ, Rev. Allison Spooner

Welcoming New Members

“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?”

- Mark 4:34 (NRSV)

When I was a little kid, one of the things that was guaranteed to elicit groans

and complaining was PBS pledge week. My favorite shows (Arthur and Sesame

Street at the time) would be interrupted so that public television could beg the

grown ups to send money to support them. As an adult, I understand the

importance of the fundraising they were doing, but to be honest, I still hate

pledge week. For most of us, the word stewardship is just a “churchy” way of saying “pledge

week”. The church has associated that word with making financial commitments

for so long that I fear we have forgotten what stewardship is actually about. To be a steward is to be one who cares for, tends to, and cultivates. Reflecting

on stewardship requires us to ask ourselves how we are caring for the gifts God

has given us: starting with the gift of life itself. How do we use our energy? How

do we allocate our time? Are we helping one another to flourish and thrive? Are

we responding to the gift God has given us in Christ? Are we using the re-

sources God has given us in ways that will bring light and life to those around

us? Or are we intent on illuminating the inside of a basket, as Jesus so comically

puts it in Mark 4: 34? By limiting our thoughts about stewardship to financial resources and planning

the annual budget, we have trivialized the concept. Rather than an interruption

to the regularly scheduled programming, the concept of stewardship aids us in

discerning how we can best respond to God’s call in our daily lives. It is integral to our day to day lives as Christians. It is also integral to the life of Faith Immanuel Presbyterian Church. How do we

continue to do the work of the Church in a world that has so quickly and per-

manently changed? How will Faith Immanuel adapt to the ever changing world of

the 21st Century? We begin by thinking about our role as stewards of the good

news of Christ’s love for all the world. This month we will focus on stewardship in worship. And yes, we will make

pledges and plan the annual budget, but this stewardship month will be about a

lot more than that. As we budget, we will seek to keep our eyes focused on why

this church community means so much to us. We will cultivate gratitude for

God’s abundance and renew our sense of purpose as stewards of the gospel of

Christ. Yours in Christ, Rev. Allison Spooner

First responders and members of Faith Immanuel and Hope churches gathered for

worship on Sept. 8 under tents and on our Colonial Road lawn. More than 150

people were in attendance.

The First Responders Appreciation service, held near the commemorative date of

Sept. 11, included current and former police officers, firefighters, emergency medi-

cal personnel and their families from Lower Paxton and Susquehanna townships

and Community General Osteopathic Hospital.

Rev. James Stough, chaplain for firefighters in Dauphin county, offered prayers for

first responders and was assisted by Elder Rose Jewell-Jordan with a litany espe-

cially thanking and praying for those who keep our community safe and secure.

Rev. Allison Spooner, pastor of Faith and Hope churches, gave a sermon “To Be Fully Known and Seen” following scripture readings by Holly Dash, a former fire-

fighter, from I Corinthians and Lamentations.

Prelude and offertory music was played by pianist Matas Kazenauskas. Caleb Flick,

director of music ministries, provided piano for hymns.

Special guests Lowman Henry, chairman, Robin Lindsey and Norm Zoumas, Lower

Paxton Twp. supervisors, attended the service.

The service was followed by a picnic lunch with covered dishes and desserts from

both congregations was organized by the Congregational Life committee, chaired

by Shirley Cleaver, and a concert by the Lower Paxton Twp. Variety Band, di-

rected by Jim Milbrand. A cakewalk and Bingo was also held. Personalized certifi-

cates of appreciation were presented to first responders.

Additional thanks is extended to office administrator Debbie Kissinger for invita-

tions, certificates and bulletin; custodian Joe Sponaugle; sound specialist Sam

Shallcross; and Joe Stimmel and Terry Hack for visiting fire companies to encour-

age participation. Rose Jewell-Jordan and the worship and music committee; Ginny

Stimmel and the outreach committee; Mike Legg and the building and properties

Blessing

of the

Animals

Do you have a companion, working or service animal? Do you have family,

friends, neighbors and co-workers with pets? If you answered yes to either question, come and/or invite others to attend

Blessing of the Animals at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, on the lawn of Faith

Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Rev. Allison Spooner and Roz Presby will individually bless each animal during a

worship service with song, scripture and message celebrating all creatures great

and small. Members of the congregation have baked peanut butter treats for dogs and tuna

treats for cats, crafted pet bandanas and ties in a variety of sizes and colorful

fabrics and made velvety smooth, fragrance-free paw balm to give to animals.

Participation certificates will be given, and photographs of pets and their humans

will be taken. Representatives including Dauphin County Library System’s Paws to Read, Sus-

quehanna Service Dogs foster puppy training and Humane Society of Greater

Harrisburg programs will be present with displays and critters. Attendees are

encouraged to bring donations of pet supplies for the Humane Society. While chairs will be available, attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blan-

kets for you and your pet’s comfort. Animals should be on leashes, six-feet or

less, or appropriately secured. Water will be available for animals and humans,

and there will be a doggie relief zone. If weather becomes an issue, the service

will occur under the portico at the main entrance to the church. And if you answered no to either question asked at the top of this story, consid-

er bringing a photograph of an endangered species or a photograph of a depart-

ed animal companion for a remembrance display. Children, perhaps with aller-

gies, are invited to bring favorite stuffed toy animals. Our Blessing of the Animals banners are now along Colonial Road at the church.

A billboard, sponsored by Enders Insurance, is at the corner of Houck’s Road

and Route 22. Yards signs are being strategically placed in Susquehanna and

Lower Paxton townships. Calendar listings are online and in print with local me-

dia. The church and Lower Paxton Twp. 250 Facebook pages are sharing Bless-

ings information as are our own website, newsletter and Welcome Center mon-

itor. A media display of animals along with our service information is at the East

Shore Library on Ethel Street. Please do your part of share flyers with pet

stores, pet sitters, groomers, doggy daycares, rescues and more. Please direct your questions to members of the worship or outreach commit-

tees or to Susan Anthony at 717-979-9920 or [email protected].

Pumpkin

What a funny seed I found.

I wondered what would grow?

So I planted it in the ground.

And now I know!

Little leaves were first to sprout,

Growing in a line,

Then golden blossoms opened out

Along the vine.

And then something grew-and-grew and grew!

The biggest ever seen!

And now I have a pumpkin-

Just in time for HALLOWEEN!

The wonderful season of autumn is upon us. I hope we will soon be enjoying

cooler days along with beautiful colors the season brings. The children have quickly fallen into a comfortable routine. October is always a

busy month at Northwood. We will be talking about our pets an doing some activities in anticipation of

Faith Immanuel’s Blessing of the Animals on October 12. The hallways will be filled with signs of the season as well as songs. We will be

busy practicing our opening song for the Dauphin County Chapter Pennsylva-

nia Association of School Retirees (DCPASR) regional meeting to be held at

Faith Immanuel on October 24. The highlight of the month will be our Halloween parade, trunk or treating fol-

lowed by a mini fall festival. We are a bit smaller this year but we are a very enthusiastic group. Have a great month. Thank you for your support. I would like to especially thank Billie Hawk, Barb Legg, Pat Reidell, and Shirley

Cleaver for filling in while I was away. It was a big help and greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Deb Mercurio Director/Teacher
